Castillo is a study of scale and elegance. Inspired by Cristian Zuzunaga’s move back to Spain after living in London for 17 years, its design marks his return to what he describes as ‘my metaphorical mandala – the castle’.
Reflecting this source of inspiration, Castillo ‘dissolves’ the classical squared pattern: it features, in a large repeat, differently sized squares and rectangles in neutral colours, which overlap and blend into each other. These shapes are balanced and highlighted by a grid of thin coloured lines, in an accent colour of either coral or pink or yellow or white.
The squared pattern in each colourway is made from a minimum of five different colours but thanks to the fusion of nuances and shapes it offers, many more tones seem to emerge from the curtain.
Castillo is woven in a plain weave and made from shiny melange yarns, which offer outstanding colour richness. These create a refined, irregular play across the surface of the textile, and shimmer or appear matt depending on the lighting conditions and the look of the interior where they are used.
In creating the pattern for Castillo, Cristian Zuzunaga used the ‘Golden Ratio’, which is based on phi. This formula was first identified by the Ancient Greeks as the way to create the ideal balance between perspective and beauty in architecture and art. Mankind has used it extensively since then.
Because the pattern follows this formula, it grows exponentially from one corner of the repeat–where it is smallest in size–across the entire repeat.
Cristian Zuzunaga: ‘Castillo works with fundamental elements that help to define life as we know it. It explores the relationships between numbers and matter.’
The new design explores balance and the relationship between elements, which can be considered opposites: Castillo, combines large and small geometric shapes and mixes accent colours with more subdued tones.
As the curtain is made from Trevira CS, it is long lasting and easy to maintain. Consequently, it is suitable for private homes and contract applications. Thanks to the elegance, individuality and practicality it offers, it is particularly well-suited to hospitality venues.
Barcelona-born Cristian Zuzunaga’s work sits in a unique space between art, fashion and design. His diverse portfolio spans print, letterpress, photography, sculpture and furniture design. Cristian Zuzunaga’s innovative work particularly stands out for its use of colour, which is, in part, a reaction to the fact that many of us inhabit a world of black, white and grey. His designs explore colour as a means to ‘drive interaction between individuals and their surroundings, evoke emotions, and counterbalance negative ways of seeing and thinking’.
A firm believer in the power of collaboration, Christian Zuzunaga has worked with leading international brands including Danskina, Kvadrat, Faberge, Moroso and Ligne Roset. His work is regularly published and exhibited around the world.
