About Rietveld Originals
MORE ABOUT RIETVELD ORIGINALS
Rietveld Originals is a label of furniture company RIETVELD by Rietveld, established by Gerrit’s grandson, Egbert Rietveld. Rietveld Originals offers all of Gerrit Rietveld’s furniture designs that are currently in production and works in close cooperation with other manufacturers such as Cassina. Rietveld Originals aims at expanding its collection by re-issuing authentic Rietveld designs in close cooperation with the Rietveld heirs. Dutch designer Edward van Vliet has been appointed with the assignment to revive a number of classics based on authentic sketches and prototypes.
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (Utrecht 24 June 1888 – 25 June 1964), architect and furniture maker, learned the art of furniture making from his father. He developed his skills in architectural drawing and later architecture through additional training courses, which brought him in contact with members of De Stijl such as Robert van ‘t Hoff, Bart van der Leck and Theo van Doesburg. In 1919, Rietveld established himself as an independent architect and joined De Stijl. Rietveld’s furniture designs from this period, which were executed in characteristic primary colors (red, yellow, blue), are pure representations of De Stijl concepts. In 1921, he met Truus Schröder-Schräder, for whom he designed, in close consultation, the Schröder House in 1924. When De Stijl was disbanded in 1931, a difficult period started for Rietveld. The Depression and the war led to a slowdown in the construction business. However, Rietveld did make a large number of furniture designs in this period. Rietveld Originals brings a range of Gerrit Rietveld’s well-known and lesser-known furniture designs to the market.
