In September the subject of design will once more dominate public life in a number of major European cities – including the British capital, as the London Design Festival comes to town. The Thameside city is already home to some of the world's leading designers and architects, which will naturally have a positive impact on the festival.

From 17 to 21 September leading protagonists in the field of design will be actively participating in the festival, benefitting not only the exhibitors but also attending professionals, visitors and consumers. Newcomers will feel equally at home in London, as will the craftsmanship-oriented specialists at Decorex International, which this year will take place in a new and impressive venue in Syon Park.

In all its facets – even well beyond the mainstream – the London Design Festival spreads right across the city, establishing local focal points (Tent London & Super Brands London) and individual centres (designjunction). Visitors with an instinct for exploring the design world will find the ideal opportunity for this in the twentieth 100% Design show. What began as a rather unpretentious exhibition in a tent in the Kings Road in 1995 has since developed into a widely respected centre for top British and international design.

STARON® Art – Inspired by Wildlife

Animals in the wild are the inspiration for this year’s 100% design home design collection of Samsung SDI’s Architectural Product, STARON® Solid Surfaces. The large, white “humpback kitchen island”, the black-and-white striped “zebra pull-out table“ with an integrated cutlery tray, and the white “hedgehog sofa” with massage spikes – all of the wildlife designs are outstanding, functional and enduring highlights of unique kitchen, lounge or office design.

Innovative design is matched by aural inspiration courtesy of the STARON® “owl speakers”. The terminal “chameleon kiosk” adds technology and colour to the scenery through an integrated touch screen and UV-printed patterns. Both the orthogonal and organic design lines are used to represent the multitude of design options with Samsung’s STARON®.


The Icon Design Trail is ten

The Icon Design Trail is a highly influential guide, featuring only the best events and shows during the London Design Festival (LDF). It is the only independent guide to the LDF and it has become the essential accessory for festival visitors since its inception in 2004.

Compiled by Icon’s respected editorial team, the guide will help you to prioritise your time, whether you’re in town for the day or for the duration of the programme, giving you a carefully selected list of the festival’s most important and must-see events across east, central and west London.

This year the Icon Design Trail will celebrate its 10th anniversary, with 100,000 copies of the guide available throughout the festival. A copy can be picked up at participating events or is available to download as an app, allowing people to add their favourite events.

100% Design celebrates its 20th edition with an opening by Philippe Starck 

100% Design will return this September 17–20 celebrating its 20th anniversary. International creator Philippe Starck will open the show on 17 September, to coincide with the unveiling of his Flexible Architecture tile collection for Ceramica Sant’Agostino on Capitol Designer Studio’s stand.

The 20th edition is set to celebrate the show’s overall contribution to the rise of British design in the last two decades, whilst reinforcing the importance, longevity and future of the show.

100% Design 2014 will comprise four industry sections – Interiors, Kitchens & Bathrooms, Workplace and Eco, Design & Build, all of which will feature thought-provoking installations, offering challenging and interactive content. 

Workplace iAlter by NBBJ

For Workplace, architecture practice NBBJ will present iAlter to highlight the multi-disciplinary nature of workplace. For Kitchens & Bathrooms, vPPR Architects will create Foam Dome – sponsored by Turkishceramics – using white lather to reference luxurious bubble baths and purifying spa experiences.

Eco, Design & Build will feature Materials Landscape curated by SCIN, a concept designed by Thomas.Matthews that encourages visitors to engage in new materials. For Interiors, studio Mette will create the Maker Carousel, highlighting the designer maker’s ability to produce in an interactive space.

This year’s Talks with 100% Design offers a live platform for an exhilarating series of talks and debates. Curated by Claire Barrett, the talks programme will cover a range of subject areas and issues, with international speakers including Jaime Hayon, Nina Tolstrup, Ross Lovegrove, Maxim Velcovsky and Eric Klarenbeek. The show auditorium will be designed by El Ultimo Grito.

designjunction at London Design Festival

The fourth edition of the critically-acclaimed designjunction returns to the industrial surrounds of the Sorting Office, on New Oxford Street for this year’s London Design Festival in September.

Spanning four floors of the magnificent central London location designjunction2014 will showcase 180 leading global brands promoting design, retail and innovation.

This year’s exciting line-up will see the return of a host of iconic brands and loyal designjunction partners including Modus, String, Innermost, Channels, Anglepoise, Bla Station and Zero joined by newcomers to the show such as Marset, Johanson Design, Lightyears and Tom Dixon. Also showing at designjunction 2014 will be a stellar array of smaller, cutting-edge labels including Buster + Punch, James UK, Utopia & Utility, Bravo, and Brokis.

In another exciting development, designjunction 2014 will see an exclusive installation from iconic British car manufacturer MINI, in partnership with leading design publication Dezeen, on ‘The Future of Mobility’.

After the successful editions of Ventura Lambrate, Ventura Interieur and Ventura Berlin, designjunction 2014 hosts Ventura London organised by Ventura Projects, experimental and conceptual exhibitions alongside the most recent developments by the next generation of designers.

lightjunction will present the very best of global decorative lighting brands and will encompass the basement of the Sorting Office as well as reaching across parts of the first and second floors. Organised in partnership with Cameron Peters Fine Lighting and supported by Megaman, this year lightjunction will be bigger than ever with pioneering lighting installations to be presented by Blackbody and Jake Dyson.

We will also present light-dating, a platform for like-minded industry professionals to meet and connect with global lighting brands through scheduled one-to-one speed dating sessions. Leading lighting brands to look out for throughout lightjunction include Lightyears, Artemide, Zero, Anglepoise, Cini & Nils, ÖRSJÖ, Marset, Buster + Punch and Brokis – all of whom will present new products. 

Flash Factories

The vibrant flash factory area will return at designjunction 2014, bringing the process of industrial production to life, courtesy of some of the world’s leading design manufacturers. On-site visitors will see bespoke ceramic tiles cut and hand-painted from Bert&May, intricate crystal-cutting from Waterford Crystal plus live upholstery making from British furniture manufacturer Coakley & Cox.


A fully-serviced restaurant from Transport for London, which is celebrating the year of the bus, will provide visitors with an array of on-site food and drink. There will also be a café courtesy of Italian artisan coffee makers, La Marzocco and an on-site wine bar from the Chilean Embassy. On the ground floor, iconic design brand Alessi will serve coffee and aperitivos the Italian way and in the basement Foundry will present a lightjunction bar and lounge in partnership with Asahi Beer.


This year, our seminar programme includes some of the most inspiring names in the industry from Sir Kenneth Grange, Alberto Alessi, and Tom Dixon to Trisha Guild, Jake Dyson, Moritz Waldemeyer, Kristjana S. Williams and Cristián Valdés.The programme will bring together the industry’s best creative and critical minds on current and future hot issues facing design. 


Tent London & Super Brands London 

East London is firmly established as the most creative and forward thinking design destination of all, with Tent London & Super Brands London at The Old Truman Brewery at its heart.

Now in its 8th year, Tent & Super Brands have continued to carve out an impressive reputation as an anchor of the LDF – a beacon for anyone looking to discover the best contemporary design. 

The 11-acre East London hub is known for presenting extraordinary interiors products from 290 established global brands, independents and undiscovered talents, and a collection of country showcases. The four-day event also includes a roster of inspiring talks, engaging installations and showcases from Heineken, Studio TILT, Afroditi Krassa & MG Motors.

Tent London’s exhibitors provide an ideal showcase for the world-class design that can be found in East London. Labels that started small when Tent London was launched 8 years ago are now fully established and continue to grow. These brands continue to return to Tent London, reflecting the show’s role as the central hub for this design district and beyond.

Found in the same location but with its own strong independent identity, Super Brands London showcases international design brands that want to increase their profile in the UK market. This is achieved with a sleek and easy to navigate show that is effectively a series of temporary showrooms. Brands who have elected to show at Super Brands this year include Graham & Brown, BoConcept, Ligne Roset, Marshalls, Munna, Branca Lisboa, Ginger & Jagger and Armourcoat. Super Brands will also be showcasing MG Motors’s new initiative, championing young British designers in automotive design.

The four-day event also includes a roster of inspiring talks, engaging installations, a materials trail and showcases from Heineken, Studio TILT & Afroditi Krassa.


London – Generator of Architectural Impulses for the Modern World?

London is not only the capital of Great Britain, it’s also the largest city in Europe and one of the strongest economical powerhouses worldwide, attracting more than 30 million visitors annually (2008). Considering all the first-class tourist attractions it has to offer, one wonders if visitors will remember London as a future-oriented city, or if most of them identify it primarily with the glory days of a bygone empire ...
