Nya Nordiska, a leading global textile company, received the award "Nike für Fügung", sponsored by the Association of German Architects (BDA), for the extension of its headquarters. The distinction is awarded both to principal and architect for their joint performance: Nya Nordiska received the "Nike" together with the architect responsible, Volker Staab, at Deutsche Filmmuseum in Frankfurt. The "Nike für Fügung" Award once more confirms, as fourth architecture award, the outstanding quality of the extension building, which was completed in 2010.

The international jury of seven members, including Michael Frielinghaus, incumbent president of the Association of German Architects (BDA) and Peter Cachola Schmal, Director of Deutsches Architekturmuseum Frankfurt, were impressed by the fact how the extension building incorporates and expands on the characteristics of the place: "The result is a building which deals carefully but without any reservations with the historical context of the city and is modest and self-assertive at the same time. With the project in Dannenberg, the example is set that even manufacturing sites in central city locations can contribute to urban upgrading through increasing urban density", reads the jury’s statement.

During the one-year construction phase it was achieved to complement Nya Nordiska’s ensemble of timber-framed and new buildings by an impressive functional-aesthetic connected building and to preserve at the same time the existing buildings, part of which are protected as historic monuments: "The extension building follows our principle of relating the traditional to the present", explains Sybilla Hansl, managing director at Nya Nordiska for Design & Production. Staab Architects, who succeeded in the tender for the project, transferred the volumetric characteristics of shed and gable roofs of the historic city into the formal shape of the new building. At the same time, the six connected buildings take up in varying volumes the imagination of a folded landscape, similar to pleated fabric. Thus the 4,110 square metres of industrial and office area in uniform rubicund anodized metal embody the modern external presentation of Nya Nordiska in its historical context.

"This award is the continuation of the shower of awards, after the BDA Award Lower Saxony and the Lower Saxon State Award for Architecture last year", comments Remo Röntgen, managing director for Marketing & Sales at Nya Nordiska. "We are particularly delighted that the 'Nike für Fügung' explicitly distinguishes our successful cooperation with Volker Staab Architects –and of course with all other companies involved in the construction."
The ceremonial act was followed by the opening of the exhibition on the Architecture Award with the awarded objects in Deutsches Architekturmuseum.

On the Nike Architecture Award

For the third time, BDA awards the Nike Architecture Award, named after the Greek goddess of victory, which honours both architects and principals in all of Germany for exceptional quality in architecture and urban construction. There is one prize in each of the six categories –according to the essential elements of successful architecture: Symbolism, atmosphere, integration, composition, innovation and social commitment. The "Great Nike", a sculpture created by Wieland Förster, honours the most remarkable project of the past few years. For the first time, a building is awarded with the "Classical Nike", whose extraordinary value in design and function has proven itself over decades. The nomination of the projects was done by the state associations of BDA. Members of the jury are the president of BDA and/or one representative and another six skilled jurors (three architects, one urban planner and one laureate of the BDA critics’choice award).
