WAGNER's new D1 office chair family by Stefan Diez dispenses with complex mechanics but is nevertheless movable on all axes – resulting in aesthetic as well as comfort benefits.

The new D1 is not shy about showing what it can do: Designer Stefan Diez deliberately left the technology visible, putting the chair's most characteristic feature – the four-pointed hinge – centre stage

The D1 family of chairs from WAGNER can boast of a double achievement – a new form in chair design, as well as the invention of a new way to sit.

Focus on the essentials

With the creation of his new D1 chair family, Stefan Diez has managed to leave space for function within the aesthetic of the design. Arguably, the most outstanding feature of the D1, the real innovation, is the joint – the interface between shell and foot. As Diez says, ‘When one particular element is fundamental to the design, as the moving joint is in the case of the D1, it has to be the central design element, not just an arbitrary one. To me, it just makes obvious sense to focus on the component that makes the whole thing special.’

The self-confessed minimalist remains convinced that it usually doesn't take much to get to the core of a thing. The D1 for example, has neither adjustable armrests nor splines. ‘That's the advantage of starting from scratch: you forget about the extras. You omit the bells and whistles, and open your eyes to the essentials.’ The D1 is what it is – simple, beautiful, elegant. Yet it is still flexible enough to fulfil the needs of the person seated on it.

The D1 isn’t about bells and whistles, rather it’s about the essential: Sitting. In D1’s case, it’s not the person that adjusts the chair, it’s the chair that adjusts the person

Moving sitting

Moving whilst seated creates its very own dynamic – and with both the D1 Office and D1 Low, each perceptible shift becomes a delight. The Dondola® 4D is a revolutionary mechanism that, with its four-axis movement, allows the upper part of the chair to respond and react to the physical movements acted upon it. The D1 is laser-focused on finding the solution to a problem which people sitting at their desks experience every day, and the result is a distinctive design-chair that leaves both conventional seating solutions, as well as complicated mechanics, in its wake. The D1 forms a harmonious unit with the person seated upon it, preventing discomfort from arising in the first place by gently challenging the body.
