It is a challenge for architects to keep up with fast-paced trends and dream mood boards. More often than not, wide-eyed clients must be brought back down to earth with practicalities and budgets.

This is a particular gripe of Milan based architect Paola Silva Coronel: ‘Interior magazines show high-ceilings and walls covered in metres of marble that would be genuinely impossible to make – because they are 3D renders, designed to enhance the perception of a single chair!’

As a global consultant to 3M, Silva Coronel often speaks to owners, contractors, architects and designers all with demanding briefs: ‘Companies need to tell their stories, personalise environments, design corners for specific products – all with time and budget pressure,’ she says.

When confronted with this type of challenge, she always suggests 3M products. ‘You can construct easily, with little expense and more sustainability. Yet you can also satisfy those expectations of marble or gold leaf – these unbelievable environments can actually come to life.’

Silva Coronel used 3M™ Dichroic Glass Finishes for an installation of shifting colours during Dutch Design Week 2019, while she has also seen 3M™ Fasara™ films used successfully on mirrors in the refurbishment of a theatre in Pietrasanta, Italy.

‘3M™ Dichroic and Fasara™ Glass Finishes add amazing and unexpected aesthetic possibilities to glass, while maintaining its distinct identity and 3M™ DI-NOC™ Glass Finishes can be applied to the rear side of the glass, to take advantage of its resistant qualities, yet turn it into an opaque material,’ says Silva Coronel.

She concludes: ‘A single product is available in more than 1,000 finishes. It is no longer a matter of budget, but a matter of creativity.’
