Wewood’s latest chair, Loop, is its first design from David Girelli, a Swiss designer schooled in Milan, settled in London, and with classic Nordic design principles at the end of his pen. Already versed in the sort of design language Wewood has used to build its portfolio of comfortably elegant furnishings fit for houses or hospitality, Girelli has tackled for Wewood that living room staple: the lounge chair.

In its stylistic nod to the 1950s – and the iconic designs that emerged at that time from Denmark – Loop fulfils Wewood’s brief for timeless design. Portuguese craftsmanship ensures refinement in the jointing and finish of the oak frame, and the latter’s marriage to the plump, upholstered components, while the very 21st-century demand for all-embracing, cosseting comfort is met in the armchair’s enveloping form. Aiming to be the ultimate antidote to the polite posture endured day-long at desks, the voluptuous tube that forms the backrest and arms tilts tactically to embrace bodies, pulling them in to rest and recharge.

Girelli has form not only as a product designer; experience in fashion and interior design also feeds into his work. It has given him a keen sense of how to play with scale, colour and texture in order to create furniture with impact, but which nevertheless blends into multiple interior styles. Loop slots equally into domestic and hospitality settings, eased by the generous choice of hardwearing fabrics and leathers for its upholstery. What’s not to love?
