One of the simplest, most useful products ever created is the white tile. It is a single prosaic element with myriad potential – a component to inspire infinite uses and arrangements. It’s easy to overlook a white tile, but it can hold so much beauty. That beauty can be as audible as it is visual.
It is those possibilities that Rockfon will be exploring at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen this June, investigating the adaptability and immersive nature of their products through the call to action of the Experience Worlds Within, a showroom concept designed in collaboration with Spacon & X. ‘It’s a tribute to and an exploration of the Rockfon universe,’ says Rockfon Design Director Christian Klinge, ‘from the very core materials and systems to the experienced serenity of good acoustics and the beauty of good design.’ It’s about how an individual reacts to and enjoys an environment, within a contemporary, soft, biomorphic visual style. It is, as the title of the installation suggests, experiential.

A modular approach

Rockfon is known for the development and creation of interior acoustic solutions that create a profound difference in an environment. Year on year, products are showcased from new angles and in a fresh light to inspire. At their core, these products are as useful as they are innovative, engineered from stone wool – a material which can elevate an interior design project to a different level purely through physics. It’s an alchemy of sorts, taking commonly available rock and spinning it in a molten state to create the core material for modular construction elements that absorb sound with remarkable precision. Stone wool is durable, fully recyclable and fire and humidity resistant.

Creating a modular design means that the different elements can be reused, reconfigured, and repurposed, minimising waste

The strong visual and modular nature of Rockfon’s tiling is the focus of this year’s showcase. Creating a modular design means that the different elements can be reused, reconfigured and repurposed, minimising waste and supporting the commitment to a more circular future. Whatever the size and dimension of a space, the acoustic solutions can be sculpted to suit its end use. And then, the stone wool core within each tile can be recycled endlessly and reused for a new space, and another, and another.

Hear, feel, connect

To truly demonstrate the qualities of something that influences sound, it needs to be experienced firsthand – which is what Rockfon is doing with Experience Worlds Within. The installation engages multiple senses, immersing visitors in themed zones that are conducive to focus, comfort and well-being, each highlighting unique acoustic qualities and design possibilities. From the moment you step inside, you’ll notice a distinct shift in the way sound interacts with the environment, creating an immediate sense of transformation.

The aim is to spark curiosity and offer an inspiring experience by combining an explorative approach with the products and materials

Visitors will have the opportunity to see, touch, smell and feel the space, immersing themselves in the acoustic comfort that Rockfon products provide. Through storytelling and guidance from experts, they can connect the knowledge of acoustics with the actual feeling and perception. The aim is to spark curiosity and offer an inspiring experience by combining an explorative approach with the products and materials.

Dialogue in design

Some of the infinite possibilities offered by Rockfon’s sound-focused designs are demonstrated by the Rockfon Hub, an easy-to-install zone with numerous functional possibilities depending on the configuration. It comes with soft-edged island-shaped ceiling panels that cocoon users within retractable curtains. The panels can be enhanced with felt frames and inset mood lighting. It is a meeting Hub, a place to work in isolation, or it can be used as a recording studio, as demonstrated by the Rockfon HubTalks, released monthly on YouTube. This year at 3daysofdesign, Rockfon will host 2 Live HubTalks episodes featuring conversations with leading architects and interior designers on the theme of well-being in indoor environments through sustainable choices.

These talks, exploring the notion of ‘design for tomorrow’s comfort’, offer notable global perspectives

The streamable video series, recorded within a Hub installed in Rockfon’s flagship Copenhagen showroom, have involved conversations with luminaries from the world of the built environment, including Gensler, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Mecanoo and Zaha Hadid Architects. These talks, exploring the notion of ‘design for tomorrow’s comfort’, offer notable global perspectives. Rockfon has created a forum for ideas to challenge how we think about interior spaces and how we will think about them in the future.
The recording of HubTalks is made possible by the qualities and flexibility of the Rockfon Hub. It is one way to use an interior space. But encountering the materials it uses directly is totally different from watching it on a screen. Which is the point of Experience Worlds Within. ‘It is about human perception and the inner worlds of people,’ says Design Director Klinge. ‘We want to show how our three-dimensional and modular solutions facilitate a holistic approach to room acoustics, interiors and zoning. It’s all about exploring how to shape flexible spaces that accommodate contemporary professional interiors. The ambition is to inspire and draw attention to the almost infinite number of acoustic designs and visual expressions that can be created using our diverse portfolio.’
