It had great bones but was tired & worn out after almost 40 years of use. It needed cosmetic love to bring back its former glory. It needed better lighting, some key furniture pieces & better & stronger colours to offset the interiors in their lush green garden setting. Drawing Room Architecture started by adding a palette of warm, earthy & energising new paint colours to every room. Furniture fit for an active young family was added & custom new joinery was built to add storage & new play spaces for the children. The existing windows were large & plentiful giving an ample amount of natural daylight however considered internal & external lighting was needed to balance the scale of the rooms with the tasks of the occupants. Oukikyo di Atsumasa Tamura Design office | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/atsumasa-tamura-design-office-oukikyo/5106406 Mon, 15 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0200 This traditional Japanese style painting is called "Yozakura Gekka" (by Hiroshi Senju), featuring an exquisite weeping cherry tree in blossom lit by the moon light. It was for this painting that the owner wished to have a private space to admire - where he could spend his time quietly and feel the beauty of falling petals. He wanted to create simple but elegant atmosphere like luxurious hotel for his living room/study and bedroom. The building was a one-story wooden structure of 66 square meters that was build more than 40 years ago. Upon this renovation, the original main structure was kept unchanged but the west side of the house was made into a large spacious single room containing the living room/ study and the bedroom area. Storage unit between those two areas separates the room but does not close off the space, leaving openness. Kitchen and a bathroom are placed in the east side. To incorporate the owner’s love for the painting and cherry blossoms, the concept for this pro… continue

Cobram Library & Learning Centre di CohenLeigh Architects | Administration buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/cohenleigh-architects-cobram-library-amp-learning-centre/5106405 Mon, 15 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0200 The Cobram Library & Learning Centre is a distinctively ‘local’ library, embracing emerging technologies & promoting flexible learning & library spaces across all ages. How do you create a distinctively ‘local’ library? Working closely with community stakeholders, the design process involved tracing the line of the nearby Murray River, then superimposing this as the cut line on a curvilinear timber battened screen. The result is a dynamic façade that wraps the perimeter of the library, filtering & throwing light into the internal library spaces. A central pathway & ceiling element, acting as a way-finding spine, runs through the centre of the library space. At its edges, a series of abstract punctuations on the perimeter allow for private & flexible break out spaces. The effect is a community space both highly flexible & adaptable. Located on the site of the existing Civic Centre, it encompasses library spaces, reading spaces, community spaces & new technology areas. Conscious o… continue

The project is designed by Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, Milanese Studio which since 2012 has been taking care of the Delvaux boutiques’ design worldwide (more than 40, among which the last openings in London and Hong Kong). Villa in Zealand di C.F. Møller | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/c-f-mller-villa-in-zealand/5106403 Fri, 12 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0200 New construction of a villa which reinterprets the English country home with a modern and more Nordic expression. A lightning strike caused the original structure to burn down, therefore the owners chose not to reconstruct a thatched house due to the inflammable nature of the roof. However, features of the original house are retained by proposing a classical approach and symmetry in the new house. The new proposal is smaller than the original house and, with its division into a main house and annex wings, is less dominating and in greater harmony with the scale of neighbouring buildings. The relative positions of the building volumes also maintain the classical country home atmosphere and a cohesion with the site’s large park-like character. The buildings are located on the footprint of the original house, thus directly inserted in the existing garden. The roof is metal with vertical seams and recessed gutters. Pre-weathered materials are used to ensure surfaces that are comp… continue

Valencian, almost converted in Brazilian and passionate surfer she had the dream to open the first tropical sushi restaurant in her native city. This way Kaikaya was born, a project clearly inspired by Mireia’s lifestyle and that mixes elements from Japan and Brazilian tropicalismo. In the beginning of the twentieth century the first Japanese arrived to Brazil with the aim to work in the coffee plantations, although, the Japanese nutrition was totally different to the Brazilian for which they were obliged to adapt to the local ingredients. Seeking their own flavors, a new nikkei Nipo-Brazilian gastronomy flourished with a strong identity that after more than one century with its unique flavors and fusions reached international fame. Kaikaya, is the result of this history, bringing the fusion of traditional and methodic Japan with the tropical and exotic, contemporary Brazil to the center of Valencia. North-south Metro Line di Benthem Crouwel Architects | Railway stations https://www.architonic.com/en/project/benthem-crouwel-architects-north-south-metro-line/5106401 Thu, 11 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0200 It's finished! Benthem Crouwel Architects has designed seven new metro stations: Noord, Noorderpark, Amsterdam Central Station, Rokin, Vijzelgracht, De Pijp, and Europaplein. Two of them are above ground and five are underground, along a route that is almost ten kilometers long. From July 22, 2018 Amsterdam residents, commuters, tourists and day trippers can travel from the north to the south of the city in just 15 minutes. Public space The North-South Line route has been designed as a new public layer in the city, underneath the streets and canals that have supported public and private transport for centuries. Just like the streets and canals lie openly in the public space, the entrances to the stations are also open and uncovered, functioning as an extension of the street. The shortest possible connection between street and platform ensures that the stations feel safe and are easy to maintain. CUBE - Education and Self Study Center di KAAN Architecten | Universities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/kaan-architecten-cube-education-and-self-study-center/5106400 Thu, 11 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0200 KAAN Architecten has designed “CUBE”, the new Education and Self Study Center at Tilburg University (Netherlands). This compact and ostensibly low structure blends into its surrounding green landscape and into the larger architectural ensemble of the Dutch educational campus, which includes the quintessential Cobbenhagen building of the Catholic College of Economics, constructed back in the Sixties. Located in the north-west corner of the campus, which is characterized by an orthogonal plan, the 11.000 square-meter building serves all faculties and it is in constant use by some 2.200 students and lecturers that cross its spaces every day. CUBE is anchored to the landscape by paved pathways that guide users to its entrances on the south-side corners. It is a secluded space for study that feels like an opening in the woods. More than any other building in the campus, the new Education and Self Study Center is a building for students: open and spacious, elegant and robust. KAAN Arc… continue

Noma 2.0 di BIG / Bjarke Ingels Group | Restaurants https://www.architonic.com/en/project/big-bjarke-ingels-group-noma-2-0/5106399 Wed, 10 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Situated between two lakes and within the community of Christiania, the new Noma is built on the site of a protected ex-military warehouse once used to store mines for the Royal Danish Navy. Imagined as an intimate culinary garden village, guests are welcomed to experience a new menu and philosophy that will redefine Noma for years to come. Central to the design was the idea of dissolving the restaurant’s individual functions and organising them into a collection of separate yet connected buildings. A total of 11 spaces, each tailored to their specific needs and built of the finest materials best suited for their functions, are densely clustered around restaurant’s heart putting the chefs at the heard of it all. Every part of the restaurant experience – the arrival, the lounge, the barbeque, the wine selection and the private company – are all clustered around the chefs. Since the owners of the house are personally and professionally engaged with the Tyrolean mountains the main principle was to broadcast this special bond they have with the Alps. The central thought of the project is to provide the path to a summit cross which can was visualised with the shape of the roof. This shape was constructed in a way that provides tremendous views from each direction – just as if you were enjoying the view from the summit cross of a mountain. The contours of the roof are building a free from which creates a dynamic look for the whole project. The summit cross is a visual component and the extensive integration of green areas are a perfect match for the mountainous area surrounding the building. The façade was divided into two parts to strengthen the edgy structure of the roof. Moreover, the overall shape was kept as clear and extensi… continue

The aim was to translate these key aesthetic elements with layers of black, shades of grey and textures of white. A moodiness and restrained drama is created and ultimately reflects the brand aesthetic. Sydney’s iconic Queen Victoria Building was hand-picked by OSKA Germany for their second NSW store. The brief stipulates a strictly monochrome palette and include the signature crisp white, jet black and specific grey tones. This palette is explored as an extension of the clothing; honest unassuming finishes translate an understated luxe feel. The entire store is symmetrical to make the most of the 38sqm. Paying homage to classic cocktail bars of yesteryear, Malt & Juniper is moody, slightly modernist and a bit botanical. What was the brief? The brief was for a romantic, moody space, where patron comfort is key. A requirement was an over-sized back bar to house an elaborate liquor collection and a sliding ladder to access the upper reaches. We started with these two elements; the bar as a moment of theatre and grandeur, surrounded by booths where occupants can tuck in and hideaway in the darkness. M&J’s offering inspired a botanical twist to the space, the resultant design balances modernist influences in timber panelling and stucco render with green marble and indoor planting. The space itself is narrow, with a mezzanine to the rear. The bar dominates the space, with a suspended planter, mirrors and varied lighting creating depth, layering and a sense of openness in a small footprint. Architect Guillermo Reynes of Gras Reynes has created an exclusive enclave of nine villas and eight apartments that capture the blue skies and bluer sea, looking towards the super-yacht harbour Port Adriano designed by Philippe Starck. What was the brief? To add an extra bathroom to this family four bedroom, one bathroom weatherboard house. What were the key challenges? Sometimes the smallest renovation can make the biggest impact. This is certainly true for this double fronted weatherboard family house in Fairfield. With a small budget and only a 1.2m setback from the boundary - we transformed the main bedroom into a luxurious parents retreat. What were the solutions? We created a long narrow ensuite that pushes out to the boundary, and into the existing front bedroom. Creating a 1.5m wide ensuite with vanity, WC and shower all with a views to the sky and access to daylight through a full 4m long skylight. The client’s wishes were an open-plan day area, a clean-lines project, loads of light, a big kitchen unit, one double bedroom that could be minimal and a bathroom, as big as possible, with natural light and ventilation, serving the bedroom but open to guests. The project had to provide plenty of storage in order to keep the spaces tidy, be very practical, while contemporary and cozy. The floor plan has a narrow central body with two peak-shaped spaces at each end, an awkwardly shaped property. A lot of thinking had to go into ways of providing space for everything. Because of rapid growth of population it was assumed that the street network would not have enough capacity to accommodate both private cars and public transport. Moving public transport underground was seen as a solution to the problem. The decision concerning the first phase construction was finally made in 1969, and regular traffic between Helsinki railway station and Itäkeskus (‘eastern centre’) began in August 1982. Gradually the metro line was extended both eastwards, where it reached Mellunmäki in 1989 and Vuosaari nine years later, and westwards, where the Ruoholahti stration was opened in 1993. Discussion about extending the metro line westwards to Espoo started in the late 1990s. When the western metro project was launched in 2009, Helsinki’s traffic policy was no longer defined by the needs of private motoring. Delft City Hall and Train Station di Mecanoo | Infrastructure buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/mecanoo-delft-city-hall-and-train-station/5106382 Fri, 05 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Arriving in Delft is an unforgettable experience. From the outset, Mecanoo’s idea was to design a station that makes it clear to visitors that they have arrived in Delft. The station, in combination with the new city hall, sits atop a new train tunnel built in place of the old concrete viaduct that divided the city in two since 1965. Coming up the escalators, the impressive ceiling with the historic map of Delft unfolds. When you look outside, you see the city and the old station as a contemporary version of Johannes Vermeer’s painting 'View of Delft’. Interweaving past and future The city of Delft reflects its past: the multitude of historic buildings and canals; the ‘Prinsenstad’ city, closely connected to the Dutch Royal Family; and, of course, the world famous Delftware ceramic factories. On the other hand, the Delft University of Technology is at the forefront of technical innovation. The character of Delft, epitomised in this combination of past and future, was the starting p… continue

Project #11 di Studio Wills + Architects | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/studio-wills-architects-project-11/5106381 Thu, 04 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0200 PROJECT #11 is an interior renovation to a 4-bedroom apartment for its new home owners: a couple whom entertains frequently. To make way for a larger space to entertain and lounge around, 4 former bedrooms were reduced to 2 through the demolition of internal walls. This demolition led to the discovery of the inherent structure of the apartment. It is supported by structural shear walls. The concept of using Walls as Spatial Organizers and Dividers in this open-plan apartment was then conceived. A structural shear wall, that was left to stand in the center of the apartment after the demolition, was rendered black for visual focus and serves as a point of orientation in the apartment. It is a backdrop for a primarily black-colour home entertainment system in the lounge, minimizing its physical presence. In the Dining, it serves as a backdrop for an antique piano and Chinese Calligraphy inherited from the owner’s families. A series of grey plaster and white painted walls radia… continue

The hydro corridor to the north of the station accommodates commuter parking for 347 vehicles, Passenger Pick-Up and Drop-Off with associated access roads from Keele Street. Bruce McLean, Alsop’s long-term collaborator, was appointed as artist for the station, and in this particular case the art is totally integrated into the architecture of this structure. McLean was inspired by ancient architecture – the external columns at Finch West refer to Greek caryatids and those supporting the underground roof were influenced by 6,000 year old Minorcan pillars that would have supported underground houses. The sculptural concrete forms are integrated with the supporting columns of the substation and entrance buildings, the bus canopy, and double-height columns below grade. All is Broken at Shanghai Museum of Glass “It is the fate of glass to break:” Taking this well-known proverb as its starting point, BRKN explores how things shattered, fractured and cracked can speak to heartbreak and hope, and everything in between. Stack House di FreelandBuck | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/freelandbuck-stack-house/5106355 Thu, 20 Sep 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Stack House is a newly built 2,207-square-foot residence designed and developed by award-winning LA and NY-based architecture office FreelandBuck. Comprised of four stories notched into a sloping hillside, this vertical house uses the subtle rotation of each room to create seamless indoor-outdoor spaces at every floor, each with unique and unobstructed views to the San Gabriel mountains. Working with difficult site constraints is central to the design of this house; unlike conventional hillside homes that appear to have been placed atop the slope, this house is embedded into it, creating a much closer relationship to the landscape. The primary living spaces at the third level (dining, kitchen, living, den) are organized into a simple grid of four rooms. The walls of each room curve at the center in a series of tangent arcs that blend the individual spaces while carefully opening views through the house. A central stair connects the living spaces to a rear dining patio and yard continue

Gracia mini apartment di YLAB Arquitectos | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/ylab-arquitectos-gracia-mini-apartment/5106354 Thu, 20 Sep 2018 00:00:00 +0200 The project consists of the interior reform of a former gatekeeper residence, located on the roof of a building in the Barcelona district Gracia. Enjoying a privileged location overlooking the neighboring buildings and surrounded by a large terrace, this apartment showed serious deficiencies such as its small size of 38 m2. An Australian couple wanted to reform the apartment to work as an occasional residence, giving priority to the day spaces. They wanted a warm, comfortable and functional space, as versatile and with as much storage as possible. Functionally the intervention proposes the creation of a main space formed by a kitchen with an island and a living area. At night, this space turns into a bedroom through the opening of a pull-down bed integrated in the wall cabinets. Hidden behind the kitchen is a more private area, consisting of a closetstudio that gives access to the bathroom. The design concept focuses on the enveloped space, covering walls and ceilings with cust… continue

Therefore they organized an architectural competition. As it happened, the winning proposal came from a German team of architects. A suitable site was found in Scheffau, which is the geographical center of the three municipalities. The new building is situated at the foothills of the "Wilder Kaiser" Mountain Range, directly adjacent to a former residential and care home that no longer corresponds to the required standards. The completion and opening of the new Nursing Home was in December 2017. The building consists of two compact volumes interlocking at the central section where they form an atrium. Three different outside spaces are created by the positioning on the plot: a public garden, a separate dementia garden and a playground for childre… continue

This 184,000-square-foot mixed-use development centered around the renovation of an existing 9-story circa 1928 building. Once the home of the largest furniture store in the South, the building was designed by Weiss, Dreyfous and Seiferth, architects of the Louisiana State Capitol. In addition to renovating the Art Deco building, the project included a 4-story addition. Specific program components include a 234-room boutique hotel, bar, restaurant, meeting spaces, and retail. The addition complements the original building, referencing the existing building through the use of hand-made brick masonry and cast stone cladding. Scenic Advisement Offices di Feldman Architecture | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/feldman-architecture-scenic-advisement-offices/5106350 Wed, 19 Sep 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Upon entering this 5,000-square-foot space, one’s mind might not immediately jump to the quaint yet resonant past embedded in the bones of this historic Battery Street location. In fact, if not for the humble design elements including Douglas fir beams, high ceilings, and stall-like enclosures, there would be no indication of its original purpose. Built in 1909, and known historically as Bricca Stables, this former horse stable now boasts office space that marries the past with the present. “From a space-planning perspective, we approached it as being mostly open, but with enclosed areas for meetings,” says Tai Ikegami, managing partner at Feldman Architecture. “From a design perspective, we looked at it as making modern interventions within the historic space.” The spare, open layout contrasts with semi-transparent conference rooms that recall the horse stalls of the past. The space contrasts rough with sleek, and formal with informal in its modest, yet deliberate design. Each… continue

Cottage Near a Pond di studio A111 | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/studio-a111-cottage-near-a-pond/5106349 Tue, 18 Sep 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Inspired by traditional fisherman´s cabins, we designed a small cabin on a bank of a pond, which is surrounded by a picturesque scenery. Its size is limited by the legislation. The maximum built-up area 50 m2 and the maximum height of 5 m require a special ground-plan solution for a family holiday house. The object consists of four small masses, three of which are connected and one separated, standing nearby. The central space is accessed by a minimal entrance through the kitchen, which also has a built in component of a rather small attic space intended to be a sleeping space for children. The kitchen offers a beautiful view of the water surface, as well as the bedroom, while the living space also opens up in the other direction, to the sunlit scenery of mature oaks. The individual separated object serves as a storage space with a covered porch suitable for drying fisherman´s nets or just silent contemplation surrounded by natural beauty. studio A111: Ing.arch. High on the owner's wish list were increased physical and visual connections between rooms and to the outdoors. A central feature of the original design was a courtyard garden, experienced primarily through the living room. Careful reconsideration of the openings surrounding this space reframed it as a tranquil organizing element of the house, central not just to the living room but also to the entry, the daily circulation paths and the more informal spaces of the home. Single pane windows were replaced and extended floor to ceiling. Upgraded insulation and high efficiency radiant floor heat allowed the removal of ductwork and low ceilings, dramatically reducing the home's energy consumption. The new project is updated and more livable but still respectful of the best elements of the original design.… continue

The stakes of the project were simplicity, efficiency, environmental control and extensibility, which is a prerequisite for the durability of an airport. It is with this objective that the construction of the building was designed in 2 phases, resulting in a linear design parallel to the runways. The terminal building consists of 2 double height halls, that hold the waiting areas which open onto the landscape on one side and on the runways on the other, protected by wide overhangs and a light-filtering façade. The low-emissivity metal filter is a patchwork of perforated panels that draw the shade and color the light, subtly evocating the decorative themes of the region. The concept of Bar TORÖ starts with the aim to develop a hospitality venue with a Mediterranean spirit, offering a service of a sports bar and Spanish tapas focused on an international clientele. The space located at the end of San Antonio, contains more than 200 m2, mostly occupied by a terrace at the edge of the sea. For the design, Masquespacio seeks to give major importance to the exterior mixing three colors: purple blue, turquoise green and mustard yellow. This way, together with the use of plants the intention was to create a modern and cheerful design. On the other hand, through the furniture layout and its design the aim was to play with the sports & tapas bar concept using areas with high and low benches, as well as zones to relax for small and big groups. The volume creates a dialogue with the surrounding features. It runs parallel to the large halls, as does the existing administrative building, in order to define its relationship to the wooded park more precisely. The hotel, with a capacity of 227 rooms, has two layers of 2 and 3 stars combined. A cutting made in its base, corresponding to road width, reinforces the orientation to the park. The issue of scale has also determined the choice of materials: the hotel is clad in aluminium to blend in with the existing exhibition complex while creating a new visual identity. The system of metal disks, a motif borrowed from a famous dress by Paco Rabane, creates a unique image and a visual landmark that enhances the reality of the place. Rainier. On top of the building, nearly seven-foot-tall letters wrap the building in billboard fashion, announcing “Charles Smith Wines Jet City.” The former 32,000 square-foot building is composed of two structures, a two-floor office building and a contiguous open-structure steel truss warehouse. Together, they provide space for everything from grape crush to barrel storage and bottling, to tasting rooms and sales. The transformation of this 1960s era building involved the removal of a portion of the exterior street-side façade replacing it with a 19x60-foot span of windows, opening the building up to the neighborhood and views. National borders once in need of protection are now the site of a beautiful winery and lush vineyards, carefully landscaped and maintained. The design of the winery draws on the traditions and sources of inspiration similar to the ones of the Romantic buildings of the Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape. In our case, it was inspired by the image of a classical temple, which was then transformed into an abstract form of a slab supported by three rows of columns – a pavilion standing on a solid plinth. This pavilion gently complements the green horizon and vineyards. The massing, arranged to ensure porosity from north to south, allows the sun through onto the tree-lined Rue de Croisset. In creating a large, south-facing open area at the middle of the development and a meadow on the roof of the restaurant, we were seeking to adhere to the original spirit of the greenbelt, which is now undergoing extreme densification. Compactness, slit, cut at an angle on the corner of the site, our project gives a new reading of the architectural language of the surrounding buildings of low-cost housing in order to improve urban comfort, optimise living space and provide higher levels of glazing in the facades. The name ‘MOPA’ served as an ironic allusion to the monikers of contemporary art museums, such as MOMA, MUMOK or MOCAK, to name but a few. While visiting the temporary Future Artefacts exhibition, MOPA visitors were taken to the year 2085 to explore artefacts from the first half of the XXI century supposedly discovered during archeological excavations in Vilnius and somehow related to the Crème de la Crème boutiques chain. The exhibits of the “museum” MOPA included the current Crème de la Crème haute parfumerie assortment, which was distressed using specific techniques, as well as some employees’ clothes, other items, and magazine advertisements. By using various distressing techniques, a spectacular effect reminiscent of archaeological discoveries was created. A very special place in the exhibition wa… continue

The exceptional situation of the site allowed us to turn the common areas and the hall towards the river: the residents can enjoy the choreography of passing boats. The programme consists of twenty-five fifty-square-meter homes, a restaurant in three sections, a computer room, a hobby workshop, a vegetable garden and a petanque field. Everything is organised to foster relations among the residents. Collective living spaces are as generous as possible, with abundant natural light. We have designed places that encourage exchanges and social interaction. Encounter-inviting events and sequences punctuate the routes. The staircase stands at the centre of the building, rendering it unavoidable. In combination with the wide central space, it invites mobility. Upstairs, the patio brings light from the south into the heart of the building. The white volume inside seems suspended; it deconstructs the empty space and lend… continue

Koto di Koto Cabins | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/koto-cabins-koto/5106327 Mon, 10 Sep 2018 00:00:00 +0200 KOTO [KO-TO] The traditional Finnish word for ‘cosy at home’ is made up of the design husband and wife design duo Johnathon Little and Zoe Little. Having spent the past decade in Oslo where Johnathon previously worked for Snohetta, Johnathon and Zoe wanted to acknowledge, not only the enduring minimal aesthetics of Scandinavian design they became attached to but the Nordic lifestyle and the value of a healthy work-life balance. ‘We are creating beautiful small buildings that allow people to connect with nature and embrace outdoor living.' Our ambition has been to create a lifestyle brand that is centred around the Nordic concept Friluftsliv (pronounced free-loofts-liv), an expression that translates to “open-air living”. Norwegian poet Ibsen described the term as the value of spending time in the remote outdoors for spiritual and mental wellbeing. KOTO are challenging how we think about buildings in the landscape from every angle, from construction to how they are used and th… continue

Located in a historical building, parts of which date back to 1898, and home to different media and creative offices, the new space was designed by Laura Seppänen Design Agency. Honouring both the historical bones of the building and the owners Elmo Luoma-aho and Jouni Rahikainen's food philosophy, Finnish designer Laura Seppänen has applied her clean and contemporary Scandinavian design aesthetic. Maannos offers diners a seasonal menu of largely vegetable-based dishes, using produce that has been almost exclusively grown in Finland. When translated from Finnish, the restaurant's name refers to the first and supposedly most fertile layer of soil. This was interior designer Laura Seppänen's starting point for establishing an aesthetic for the restaurant, which she decided to complete in colours akin to materials like soil, mud, clay, sand, and other elements of… continue

Located in the northeast corner of Shanghai, the old building is a typical product during the transition from a typical industrial economy to service economy. In this project, Wutopia Lab rethought the way to transform old building, by simply draping it with a new overcoat. Wutopia Lab has identified three key moments in the office, a multifunction lobby, a co-working place and a rooftop garden. The first floor is designed as a flexible event space, operated by DNA Café&More, a customizable community service, operated by Lobby Hobby's shared lobby, which integrates social, office, conference, short break, recreation, retail, six formats together based on a traditional lobby. Our clients sought to respect the existing single level character of the suburban court by minimising the visual impact of their double-storey home. Timber screens were used as a device to soften the solid rendered walls behind and to unify the facade. The downward sloping external timber screen compresses the frontage, giving the illusion of the house bending toward the ground. A spacious first floor balcony, enriched with potted plants, faces the street to create natural rather than built skyline. The balustrade’s lowest point faces the street, and combined with the sculptural entry canopy gives a gentle nod to the surrounding houses. A desire to avoid harsh materials prompted an environmentally friendly interior that uses oils instead of paints, polished concrete… continue

The breath taking setting and views of the Mediterranean inspired us to design a villa that is both very integrated in its surroundings and yet strikingly modern. The contrast between old and new returns in every little detail and the coherence of the design and the choice of materials such as wood, Corten steel, clay plaster and polished concrete has created a result that is minimalist yet warm. An old stone-built ruin in a breath taking setting, surrounded by 25 hectares of oak forest with distant views of the Mediterranean sea. Local building regulations stipulate that the building had to be rebuilt as it once was, but the owners were seeking to create an eco experience for high end rentals. Our work aimed to create a modern, luxury estate in an old stone envelope. We've opened the house up on all sides, letting the light flood in and bringing the views inside. The building gains in autonomy and becomes an urban landmark. It contains three music studios, one 500 seat modular auditorium, a bar, an exhibition gallery, and a large rehearsal room. The pivoting of the volume of the large rehearsal room creates a large empty space on the inside that connects with the other elements of the project. The geometrical conflict generated by this pivoting is revealed by the triangular shape the empty space creates. In association with the diagonal lines of the staircase, the walls bend in an upward movement. The black lacquered surfaces render perception of the space more complex. Right at the top, the light brought in by the white ceiling gives it the appearance of a starry sky. The spaces are gathered around this strange heart, which may be read as some kind of interior dislocation. The spatial instability generated b… continue

The aim of the project is to create a new office form that promotes interesting and diversified interactions while maintaining high spatial efficiency. The design is crafted based on our two definitions of what make co-working spaces viable: Firstly, it goes beyond a mere open space for sharing, but rather a coexistence of both public and private spaces: this includes fluid shared work-spaces, as well as enclosed individual offices, meeting rooms and reading quarters. Secondly, co-working urges for a complex mix of spaces for serious work, relaxation and play: thus requiring standard offices where individuals work in sitting and standing formations, and free office configurations where people can work lying down. Jungle Station di G8A Architecture & Urban Planning | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/g8a-architecture-amp-urban-planning-jungle-station/5106315 Tue, 04 Sep 2018 00:00:00 +0200 In the context of a dense urban landscape it is logical that the rising start-up community would turn towards the highly efficient concept of co-working for their professional solutions. These spaces must effectively combine the positives of both public and private arenas offering the professional users an efficient resource platform whilst also encouraging social interactions and accommodating for the temporary visitor. In the core of Ho Chi Minh City and enclosed in the center of a large factory complex, “Jungle Station” sets the benchmark for conceptual design of such spaces. The entirely refurbished printing factory responds not only to the logistical complications of shared program condensation but reflects on the intangible experience of shared space. Hato Vase I - III di Rio Kobayashi | Prototypes https://www.architonic.com/en/project/rio-kobayashi-hato-vase-i-iii/5106314 Tue, 04 Sep 2018 00:00:00 +0200 In his series Hato Vase I - III, designer Rio Kobayashi creates wooden vases which ask us profound questions about the contemporary design world and the place of traditional craftsmanship within it. London-based maker and designer Rio Kobayashi stacks simple shapes made from cedar on top of each other: single components of basic symmetric shapes joined together by handmade connections of compound and dovetail joints. It is from these joints that the vases draw their name - dove, or hato in Japanese. The results are a series of totem-like wooden sculptural vases with edges painted in black and vermilion Japanese ink - the colour hiding the intricate woodwork of the joints and distracting the eye from more technical details. More than mere decoration, Rio Kobayashi sees these details as metaphors for the way we relate to craft in the world of modern design. ‘Machine-made goods are preferred by many buyers in our times and craftsmen can hardly compete’ Kobayashi explai… continue

Mikadokun/Mikadochan di Rio Kobayashi | Prototypes https://www.architonic.com/en/project/rio-kobayashi-mikadokun-mikadochan/5106313 Tue, 04 Sep 2018 00:00:00 +0200 In his Mikadokun/Mikadochan series, London-based maker and designer Rio Kobayashi created an easy-chair and stool made of turned ash poles with pointed ends. The joints are precise, delicate and at the same time sturdy. Each piece is uniquely hand-painted in red, blue and yellow colours. The design of easy-chair, Mikadokun, and stool, Mikadochan, were inspired by the colourfully painted wooden sticks of the popular table game Mikado. Though taking its name from the Japanese word for emperor, the game Mikado was invented and popularised by a Hungarian company in the first half of the 20th century and is, in fact, relatively unknown in Japan. In his own work, Rio Kobayashi uses these cultural anomalies to play with clichés of ‘East’ and ‘West’, explaining that ‘The story of Mikado is interesting for me. An operation that began with the refurbishment of an abandoned twentieth century building that Cibic has brought back from the brink. If you look up in the sky you can’t miss this impressive building which develops vertically like a skyscraper: it’s the Silo, once used to store wheat and now converted into a luxury apartment building.
