The main concert hall features a suspended “theatroacoustic” system that unifies the acoustics, lighting, and life-safety requirements into a dramatic, multi-functional architectural expression. The resulting intricately sculpted element is assembled out of 946 unique, folded-aluminum composite modules digitally fabricated from a parametric model developed by LMN’s in-house Tech Studio. There are also other interesting acoustical elements including the unusual use of exposed industrial felt fins. While featuring a number of stunning performance spaces, the building also embraces the idea that the future of musical performance is more fluid than fixed space performance, so the entire building was imagined as possible performance space. The exterior is composed of terra cotta panels and shingled glass. Triangle House di Ganna Design | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/ganna-design-triangle-house/5105608 Mon, 22 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 Triangle is beyond a geometric sign or a decorative element in this house. The house is owned by two girls and their puppy, so the design concept is centered on ” good friends”. Triangle is thus generated to be the main element which represents the inseparable three roles in the house. The harmony and balance in a triangle symbolize the good friendship between them. Designers apply triangle element in many corners no matter in door leaves, cabinets or even on the ceiling. The triangle on the ceiling cleverly softens the visual pressure brought by beams and pillars, while allowing the view extending to out of the window. Gray is the ground color so that the colorful decorations, furniture and even the window view outside can be included in the whole design. No matter at what corner, people in the house can enjoy the beautiful surrounding view outside, reminding the house owners to slow down their pace and to spent more time with their beloved family and friends. House 13 di Studio Octopi | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/studio-octopi-house-13/5105604 Fri, 19 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 ‘House 13’ near Clapham Common is a 4 bedroom house situated amidst the Victorian & Edwardian suburban terraces that cover 280 acres between Wandsworth and Clapham Common. Between 1850 and 1920 this area was almost entirely built over. The tighter-packed terraces that sprung up around Clapham Common housed more tradespeople and others of the lower-middle classes. In recent years the due to the small gardens and the increasing demand for additional family space, basement extensions have become the norm. The limited natural light and complex engineering for these projects have created a generic that is bland and often of limited long term value to the property. Design Brief In 2013 Studio Octopi were first approached by the client to design a new basement extension. The client’s brief was straightforward. Located on the main floor of a 42-story mixed use tower with direct subway access to Toronto’s Yonge and Sheppard station.   The owner, a passionate audio expert, challenges the typical retail store experience of focusing solely on the product and efficiency of the transaction for maximizing turnover. Instead, the design objective was to celebrate the ritual of listening to music and the process of testing. The intimate, dark and tactile atmosphere and sense of domestic scale give customers a quiet and lounge—like atmosphere to relax while listening to music. It’s not uncommon for customers to spend several hours pairing systems and listening to music. Richview Residence di Studio AC | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/studio-ac-richview-residence/5105598 Thu, 18 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 For the Richview Residence, Studio AC was tasked with creating a concept that maintained an open layout while housing as much storage as possible for this growing family. The Richview project was a full interior renovation to reimagine the function of a home from its 50-year-old layout, broken up into small rooms, to its modern day counterpart, an open, functional and intimate layout. This project presented itself first as an essay in re-definition, in the sense that the existing layout remained essentially in-tact. The design challenge was how to open the spaces up and artfully choreograph movement between them. This was achieved by introducing a linear organizing element in the form of a ‘support spine’ that contains storage, structure, mechanical, plumbing…. heck even the kitchen sink! To allow movement across the plan, openings in this spine are marked with grand 12” wide white oak flooring that switches in orientation and runs up the walls and ceiling, celebrating that moment.… continue

The block itself was a complex site with the existing garage and studio building to one edge surrounded by lane ways, a large double-storey heritage terrace house facing the principal street front to the eastern side and the remaining land an overgrown, rambling garden that was too large to be properly maintained by the owner and lacked connection to the main house. The owner wanted a simple, flexible and sunlit home, in which she could remain living alone happily and safely well into old-age, to be inserted into the unused garden space. The new home had to sit alongside the existing studio/garage building, allow for direct entry to the second dwelling from the lane way plus maintain access into the garage and to the studio above whilst retaining sunlight in the existing studio room, where the owner worked. Firstly, the pavilion’s design establishes an indirect relationship with the Museum building. The pavilion’s design is a polygon extracted from the Museum’s layout, corresponding to one of its characteristic spaces — the bow window — whose classic hexagonal matrix is repeated and emerges at various times throughout the Park, both in the pavements and the landscape features. The concave polygonal configuration of this layout provides the perfect base for a projection space. Secondly, the extracted polygon, once implanted in the Park and with its original context altered, including the transformation of its shape and materiality, becomes something new and detaches itself from its original source. In this second stage, the pavilion approaches the Park, establishing an affinity with its textures and finding its own materiality. It is implanted on top of the lake, wh… continue

In addition to rooms for meetings and events, the hotel also has a restaurant, a bistro bar, a spa and lounge areas. The furnishings of B&B Italia and Maxalto perfectly match the style of these sophisticated and elegant interiors. The work was switched on for the first time on 20 November and is articulated as two elements shaped on the basis of the “alpha” symbol. The repetition of this age-old character, which is charged with many positive elements and refers back to the origin of everything, generates a spiral movement shifting from the interior to the exterior of the skyscraper. Inside the greenhouse, the heart of the grattacielo, a wave of colours that are very sensitive to changes in the light invades the space, reaching heights of up to 16 m. Thanks to an innovative technology, 100 light scales act like frames in a stop motion to create an iridescent vortex, which is brought to life and made to shimmer by the brightness emanated by the object itself, in dialogue wi… continue

Long Drop di Invisible Studio | Monuments/sculptures/viewing platforms https://www.architonic.com/en/project/invisible-studio-long-drop/5105580 Mon, 15 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 The Long Drop is a no-cost, no-impact composting toilet made for and by Invisible Studio to serve their woodland studio. It was made entirely from scavenged material, and cost nothing to build. The principle of the toilet is that solids and urine are separated just below the seat. The urine is captured at ground level via a drainpipe, and will be used as fertilizer, as it contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The solids are captured via a series of stacked (donated) wheelie bins, and will be used as fertilizer once left for 12 months. The toilet was designed around available material. The studwork, battens and sheet material were all left over from other projects, and are of varying sizes. The poles were cut on site, and braced with offcuts from the steel black bar bracing used on out studio. The flashing piece at the ridge was left over from when we built ‘Moonshine’ close by, and the polycarbonate for the door and the black fibre cement tiles were scavenged from skips. The… continue

Our challenge was to reimagine the interior while retaining its mysterious, iconic luster. The keys to our success were in the restaurant’s original angles and folds, which we used as inspiration for playful new wall coverings, patterned carpets and elegant lighting. Strong geometric metal and ribbed glass partitions were added to provide balance and privacy while reflecting light in provocative ways. The showstopper? The Books House di Luigi Rosselli Architects | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/luigi-rosselli-architects-the-books-house/5105577 Mon, 15 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 A Calligrapher handed three books to his wife, she placed them in a random stack on the table… “We want The Books House”… they said. The Architect understood that the books were not only a reference to a home he had previously designed named The Six Degrees of Separation, but also to the ledges and shelves of Sydney-Hawkesbury sandstone outcrops that surface on the steep escarpments of the northern side of Sydney Harbour, including the block of land owned by the Calligrapher and the Businesswoman. Weathered rock stratums have been replaced by off-form concrete slabs with soft edges, scissoring above a monolithic sandstone storey for the house. An elliptical concrete stair forms the pivot point of each floor of the house, anchoring them to the steep escarpment; the stair also wraps around a lift core that descends, mineshaft-like to link the rest of the house to the garage level. MK Home di Ganna Design | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/ganna-design-mk-home/5105576 Mon, 15 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 Remove the exhaustions and the defenses accumulated in daytime, the house owners change their mood at the moment they stay the independent two-door entrance space. According to the rectangle layout, the designers plan public space and private bedrooms from the entrance to the inner house, and make the best use of natural sunlight by adopting large floor-to-ceiling windows. While stepping into the room, you can see a study room on the left side. The combination of different materials, the clear glass and perforated plate, and the white frames create picturesque enframed scenery. From study room to kitchen, the white perforated plates connect different spaces and serve as a L-shaped main wall. The needs of the client have been translated into design gestures, in line with the essence of the building, which is not of particularly architectural quality, but interesting for the spaces that it can hold inside. Planimetric distribution places on the ground floor all the main rooms and rest rooms, in order to completely free up the first floor and dedicate it to a large open space overlooking the landscape, taking advantage of existing heights to get a bright and ventilated space. Another fundamental element of the project is symmetry. The structural shape of the ground floor is given by a reinforced concrete structure with two rows of pillars marking the plan. SSENSE di Atelier Barda | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/atelier-barda-ssense/5105570 Thu, 11 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 The architectural firm Atelier Barda was mandated in September 2016 to expand the headquarters of SSENSE, a fashion platform known for its exclusive original content and a curated selection of over 400 fashion and luxury designers for men and women. Located in a neighbourhood that was once home to Montreal’s textile industry, the space has a surface area of 24,000 square feet, and was formerly used for logistics and warehouses. The project involved the complete redesign of the existing space to meet the company’s growing needs while staying true to its strong brand image. The main objective was to design a functional space that would speak to its original purpose and conserve its industrial look and feel by paring down rather than adding on. Sanctuary di TheShaw Studio | Prototypes https://www.architonic.com/en/project/theshaw-studio-sanctuary/5105569 Thu, 11 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 In 1783, the French architectural theorist Étienne-Louis Boullée drafted the architecture that was impossible to build - The Newton Monument. Boullée reflected his praise of Newton to the architecture without reserve, creating a spiritual shrine to preserve Newton's achievements of philosophy. Shaw Liu finds inspiration from the unrealized architectural artworks. Walking on the streets in Italy, Shaw Liu reflected on the past and the future, visible and invisible, and the extensive thought on the reflection of different objects in different hierarchical space. Reflection is indirect expression of the state of an interaction. When exposed to some kind of mirrored space, there will be a phantom-like life between people and the substance, and the objects become fickle because of the change of perspectives. Boutique Hotel Rivalmare di Gibus reference projects | Manufacturer references https://www.architonic.com/en/project/gibus-reference-projects-boutique-hotel-rivalmare/5105568 Fri, 12 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 Project needs The newly built Boutique Hotel Rivalmare is characterised by its extremely close proximity to the Adriatic Sea: the water’s edge is in fact just a few metres from the entrance. The Hotel’s owners needed to create a new, usable and comfortable space facing the sea, for guests to use during the day as a place to take refuge from the sun, at the same time creating elegant and well-designed spaces. Project features Following competitive bids for the commission, the client chose the bioclimatic Med Twist pergola. The Gibus Med Twist was chosen because it fully met specific requirements, such as high technology, the possibility of customisation, insulated blades and attention to the design details that distinguish it. Green Triangle – Aoyama 346 di Sasaki Architecture | Office buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/sasaki-architecture-green-triangle-aoyama-346/5105566 Thu, 11 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 A three-story office and retail complex in the Minami Aoyama area of Tokyo, Green Triangle—Aoyama 346 is an interplay of multiple green triangles, which articulate the liminal spaces that intermediate between the interior and the exterior of the building. The design is also a response to the client’s request to create “an urban oasis” in the very heart of the city. The project sits on a hilly, “flagpole” 750-square-meter site that is cornered by streets to the west, east, and north—the last one of which is a private driveway that is integrated into the overall design. The design primarily exploits these site conditions by referencing the geometry of triangles that variegate in their materiality, hue, and density as they progress from the exterior into the interior. A triangular, two-story void features potted plants that hang from above, folding in greenery into the building and offering visual connection with the adjacent main street through its glass curtain wall. The curved streets layout defines the shape of the neighborhood’s lots and the one in which Mach House was built is a trapezoid with curved front and rear sides. Located in the community’s border and in its highest area, the plot’s plain terrain was originally free of tree vegetation. Having experienced what it feels like to spend some time in an exposed concrete summer house the Studio had built for his father, the commissioner requested a home for himself that shared its materiality and esthetic language. The commission consisted in a minimum square footage house whose program of uses had to be organized in a single floor plan containing one en suite master bedroom, one secondary bedroom, a kitchen and a dining area in direct relationship with a living room that was also linked with a semi covered gallery, and a smaller living room that would function as a TV/cinema… continue

The ‘mass’ presents the aesthetic grounding for the project while also containing all of its support functions in a clean plywood wrapper. The plywood volume is used to lengthen the relatively modest floor plan that contains the living, dining, kitchen and entry. By stretching itself across the programs and extending the kitchen surface, the plywood volume creates a functional graphic that leads the eye across the space. While the mass acts as an aesthetic tool it also contains a foyer, closet, stairs, kitchen and even as a little house for Rusty! The existing raw brickwork and exposed concrete structure were kept as a reference to the building's heritage while a high quality finish was achieved by introducing new polished concrete, hardwood timbers, tile, and stone finishes and materials like zinc that play to the architectural story. At ground floor the design sought to optimise the expanse of the open plan kitchen-dinerlounge, which was further enhanced by a top lit rear extension. A discreet but essential utility room plus guest bathroom and storage areas were incorporated into the floor plan without detracting from the impression of volume. Flekkefjord Sparebank is one of the most influential banks in the region. The premises were becoming outmoded, so it was time to renovate the building and upgrade the organization itself. The new design is based on prevailing characteristics of a proud region; agriculture and the sea. These characteristics were transferred to the ceilings, walls, decor and lighting. The bank was transformed into a strong visual expression of the region, using excellent materials and new colors. The walls tell the history of the bank, which was given an upgrade and new interpretation. Pitch Perfect di nimtim architects | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/nimtim-architects-pitch-perfect/5105556 Fri, 05 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 nimtim were approached by a young family to assess the extension and reconfiguration of the existing ground floor layout of their postwar house in South East London. The house forms part of a terrace of identical houses close to Nunhead Cemetery. The clients were keen to have a contemporary addition that still related to the original structure. The existing layout had separate kitchen and living areas with a stepped garden that felt physically and visually separate from the property. nimtim proposed a full width rear extension with a sunken living space stepping up to a raised kitchen and patio area to connect more naturally to the existing ground level. The change in level was used as an advantage, allowing soft demarcation of zones and a better visual connection between inside and outside. Practically it allowed for a new floor with underfloor heating to be included without any excavation works. The design also freed up the current kitchen to become a flexible space; potentially a… continue

Universal Music di Sara Martinsen | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/sara-martinsen-universal-music/5105554 Fri, 05 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0100 Universal Music is the worlds largest record label. Their Danish office is located in an old classified building in the heart of Copenhagen and when the music label needed to expand designer Sara Martinsen was asked to do the full make over. Everything except for baring walls and façade was removed and from here the renovation of the 1200 m2 workspace could begin. The former space was a very standard workspace so a drastic transformation of all 1200 m2 was needed if the future space should include all the function demands that a record label could possibly have; a mini stage for release concerts, a cantina that could be transformed into an area for events and an audio room with the best possible acoustic. ‘I needed to ensure to tell the story about music and talent in every little detail. The school building had been reconverted by DMVA into casco lofts. We were commissioned to furbish the livings spaces of one duplex loft: downstairs a wide open space containing a living room, home office, laundry-room and kitchen. A long wall of cupboards divides the living space from the hall and the laundry-room. The floor has been coated in a white PU-coating. We decided to keep the space as open as possible in function of the natural light. We created a line of cupboards that start at the window, blend in to a kitchen, become an office and a library. The doors of the long storage wall, the library and the kitchen basically have a birch-plywood finish. On top of that, the long wall also got a 'gradient' from pink to white, every door gets a bit more pink towards the window. The working surface is made of black HPL and a piece of green PE around the sink. The storage space is hidden behind a partially fa… continue

In addition to being a safe haven, it is a place that accommodates and extends all kinds of possibility and happiness. Besides meeting requirements of basic "living" function, the role it plays could be richer and varied. It could be gamelike, interesting changes could be generated from its shape, function or sense. This project is one of the many among the urban concrete jungle. Yet,through mixing elements of boxes, flake-like structure and colors, and combining the big round bucket penetrates from the upper floor, the designer created aninteresting spacewithin this stereotyped and dull concrete frame. Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, the designer of Red and Blue Chair said:"structure is to coordinate the constructions, to fully guarantee the independence and integrity among the constructions.”Samephilosophy is adopted in the design of this space, showing the space through its forms, to convey an image of free. Framework Studio was asked to deliver a new store concept for multiple stores all over The Netherlands. The design had to be in line with the existing sale of the stores, but needed to give the brand a more suitable interior that matched their collections. The new look suits to the current clients and also to a new group of fashion lovers that missed out on Pauw because of its old shop fit. The Pauw stores have an elegant and clean look, its all about details and clean lines. We assumed that the store is supporting the collections and is not distracting from them. The colour is used in a sober way and the quartz paint absorbs the light instead of reflecting it. This gives the surfaces a natural feel as light would do on concrete or bricks. Located in São Paulo, the project has a corporative tower, with bigger presence, next to Marginal Pinheiros, and a residential one, 50 meters away from Rio Pinheiro’s margin. The residential edifice also includes six floors of corporative offices in its base. The space between the two towers allowed the office to create a 45m² acess square. Opened to the neighbourhood, it is connected to a green area that refines the visual and audio impact, developing a tranquil intern space with a pleasant landscape. Hana Hakim of The Stella Collective has designed a new vision for the UK based all day dining venue with the theme of ‘Botanical Punk’ with London Architects Studio C102 overseeing the project on site. Hana explains “Botanical Punk was born out of a necessity of being at the mercy of UK winters, when outdoor dining can be brutal, I wanted to bring the outside in, so it can be enjoyed all year round.” The Stella Collective used lush and tropical planting to create a canopy over the dining areas throughout the café. The modern brandy distillery was built on an empty lot next to a railroad. The mandate was to build a warehouse, which apart from its primary function of storing brandy barrels would serve as a public space and reception hall. It would be a symbol of creation and rebirth, demonstrating the role of the distillery in the life of the city. Through exploration of all project elements, the task evolved into the creation of a highly symbolic architectural ensemble.   Based on the fact that brandy ultimately comes from grapevines, rich in Christian symbolism from the Tree of Life to  the Blood of Christ, the architects incorporated several literary symbols into the design, which would conjure up images of harmonious interaction among different symbols and signs. In some cases the symbols would be opposites, but would form stable pairs that give rise to a new symbol. Inter… continue

The Oriental Garden, located in the Overseas Chinese Town, is the first villa area in Shenzhen and witnesses this modern city’s 30-year developing history from a fishing village. With low density and high greening rate, the Oriental Garden is endowed with the feeling of withdrawing from the city. The designers of Co-Direction have always been living and working in this area, they have a special emotion for this project. Combined with oriental context and contemporary design, they transformed the old house into the chamber space. The space environment, light and quality make people feel peaceful, the "quietness" in the noisy downtown is just the expression of the space. QFIS is based on the Islamic ‘Kulliyya’ or ‘place where all knowledge is sought’ and the building provides a progressive learning environment which places the institution at the forefront of contemporary Islamic pedagogy countering the pejorative image of Islamic education. The Kulliyya implies that knowledge and faith are interwoven but that all knowledge ultimately comes from faith. This relationship is explored in QFIS through the infinite spiral building plan and multiple routes that bind faculty to mosque. Uniquely for the Muslim World, the scheme gives male and female students parity by providing co-educational, non-hierarchical space where men and women have equal consideration. Its a vision, not for the future but a direction for the next decade where the new focus is about texture and craftsmanship instead of superficial visual satisfaction. A library is an introvert space that gives you shelter and comfort, but does not distract the attention from the books as the main starting element of the designing process. But a library also offers you a place to sit and relax, the surrounding atmosphere for an interesting conversation whilst giving the user a sense of comfort and sanctity. A large silver travertine cube is placed in the middle of a rectangular space. It is a room in a room with the propose to find an inner focus. The perfect symmetry give you an immediate sense of control of the space and a sense of serenity. The reduction of the environmental footprint of buildings is one of the major challenges the construction industry is facing. Intensive research is carried out in academia and industry addressing all levels from materials to systems and operation of buildings. Special emphasis has to be given to the issue of technology transfer as the construction sector is known for the slow uptake of inventions. Furthermore, the interaction of the user with the newly developed solutions is generally omitted during the research phase but plays a key role for the acceptance in the market. Both dwellings were in an absolute state of neglect and disrepair. The client's requirement was to concentrate the main living spaces on the mezzanine floor and expand them on the ground floor with other spaces with more diffuse functions that could be used as living room, study, work area... For the design of Al Baraka Bank, studio EMGA drew inspiration from the geometries of Islamic patterns, deconstructed and enlarged so as to form the outer skin and structure of the building. The diagonals and horizontal levels give the elevations of the building a unique visual character, and in addition to their aesthetic role, they also form the backbone of the structure itself. The lines create a strong personality that captivates passers-by, but also guarantees a setting that is both prestigious and comfortable for those visiting or working inside it; the geometric lines also burst forth in the interiors, in the patterns of the glass, the receptions, the ceilings, the carpets and the multi-purpose auditorium. It generates a dialog between the newly constructed building and its environment, interweaving the project with its landscape and unifying indoors with outdoors. The design process inserted targeted elements that produced a series of specific, outdoor spaces whose function is directly related to the apartment’s indoor activity. The indoor section has a linear axis with access to the rooms crossing through the common, semi-private, and private areas. Likewise, the outdoor layout follows a parallel design; a wall runs along the axis that encloses and divides the areas based on the required activity. The northeast holds two terraces joined by a pergola; the first houses a living and dining area with a vertical garden built of wooden boxes reclaimed from the shoring system used in the construction. Pauw Laren di Framework Studio | Shop interiors https://www.architonic.com/en/project/framework-studio-pauw-laren/5105529 Tue, 19 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 Pauw is one of the most famous Dutch fashion brands which has besides its own collection a variety of high level fashion labels in their stores. House for Four Generations di tomomi kito architect & associates | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/tomomi-kito-architect-amp-associates-house-for-four-generations/5105528 Tue, 19 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 This is an interior renovation project of an existing two-story timber structure house in Tokyo which was built approximately 40 years ago. The clients, a young couple and the wife’s parents, were already living here before the renovation. Soon after, the wife’s grandmother, who lived alone in the countryside far from Tokyo, also decided to move in. As such, the clients requested to renovate the house and to make it suitable for accommodating 4 generations—the grandmother (1st generation), the parents (2nd generation), the clients (3rd generation), the clients’ son (4th generation). As the age as well as daily living rhythm of each family member are different, creating a space to promote a comfortable connection among them was one of the major challenges of the project. Another focus was the provision of a comfortable living environment. The existing conditions of daylight and ventilation were not preferable since the existing rooms were split into smaller functions and as such t… continue

The Rock di Atelier Général | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/atelier-general-the-rock/5105527 Tue, 19 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 Built on the slope of Mount Shefford, the residence bridges an aerial view on one side and an ascending, rugged topography, populated by rocks and maples, on the other.   The initial idea for this project was to merge with the mountain, to nestle into the terrain until it becomes one with the residence. Entering the site from below, we see a black volume that seems to emerge from the slope and detach itself from the surrounding vegetation. Its dark truncated shape echoes the rocky projections that inhabit the site. The living areas, located upstairs, offer the occupant an intimate relationship to the site, a level access to a wild and untouched nature via a large terrace profiled to the topography. At the other extremity, the house rises above the void, allowing an atmospheric point of view towards the treetops.   A utility space sheltered by the projection of the upper floor gives access to the residence. From there, a wooden staircase leads to the main floor, where the spaces flo… continue

House MW di Ralph Germann Architectes | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/ralph-germann-architectes-house-mw/5105526 Mon, 18 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 The house was built for a couple with one child who wanted a simple house with all main rooms overlooking the lake, Lac de Joux. The location and orientation of the terrain have made it possible to fulfill their wish. Another main requirement by the clients was to have a contemporary house while respecting reasonable construction costs. The architects choose to use a prefabricated timber construction system for the facades and gables. These elements were built directly in the carpenter’s workshop, being later transported by truck on-site. The "skeleton" of the house is made of concrete. After the masonry part was completed, the prefabricated wooden facades were attached against this interior concrete structure. All facades of the house are made of a spruce structure with fiberglass insulation and covered with spruce boards. Spruce trees can be found in abundance in the regional forests. By using this method the architects could build the house at reasonable costs, with low… continue

Where Is The Toilet, Please? di M2.senos | Therapy centres / spas https://www.architonic.com/en/project/m2-senos-where-is-the-toilet-please/5105525 Mon, 18 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 Toilettes in a cemetery do not seem to be the most appealing projects. Not even for the design brief. Not even for the place. Not even for the budget. Nevertheless, for us, it was exciting! We have been there a few times before and we were always uncomfortable, looking at the floor trying not to stumble in the narrow paths between the great marble stones. So when we were asked to do the rehabilitation of the toilettes (the old building), it was as if it was the first time there. We perceive the hierarchies, the streets, the paths, the square, the church, the entrances and the exits, the trees, the stones, and the green flowerbeds… How beautiful and organized! The (old) building was huge and absolutely out of the context, with vast flat roofs that almost touch the chapel. It was a “sacrilege” to see this scenario from the south entrance of the cemetery. All we did was to reduce the size and to summarize the information. An abstract exercise to create an abstract object: no doo… continue

Architecture as a mechanism for dealing with the elements (truly, a machine for living).'' Charles Correa Traditionally, courtyards have always been an integral part of our homes and public buildings not only in India but across the globe. May it be the small courtyard houses in Kerala or The Court of the Lions in Alhambra in Spain or The Chinese courtyard houses in Beijing. Whenever there is a space around a courtyard may be in steel, stone, wood or concrete it always works. The project’s priority was to create innovative work environments capable of guaranteeing great comfort and optimal environmental conditions, while at the same time renovating the entire urban area through a vigorous yet sensible construction project that visually respected the surrounding context. The new building is classified as a replacement project, a contemporary structure grafted into the heart of the historic centre, capable of maintaining a dialectical relationship with the area. It is a model of vertical densification of nature within the city that operates in relation to policies for reforestation and naturalization of large urban and metropolitan borders. The first example of the Vertical Forest composed of two residential towers of 110 and 76 m height, will be realized in the centre of Milan, on the edge of the Isola neighbourhood, and will host 900 trees (each measuring 3, 6 or 9 meters tall) and over 2000 plants from a wide range of shrubs and floral plants that are distributed in relation to the façade’s position to towards the sun. Royal Arena di 3XN | Sports halls https://www.architonic.com/en/project/3xn-royal-arena/5105519 Fri, 15 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 <b>Can an arena be a good neighboor?</b> Large stadiums and music venues are often placed in the outskirts of cities, but not in Copenhagen. Royal Arena, a 35.000 square metre venue, has just opened in the middle of a residential area, and is designed by 3XN Architects together with HKS to be a good neighbour. One of the most anticipated cultural venues in Copenhagen, the 35,000 m2 Royal Arena, opened with four sold out concerts by Metallica. Specially designed for concerts and international level sporting events, this new venue combines two key ambitions: to create an attractive and highly flexible multi-purpose arena that can attract spectators locally as well as internationally, while ensuring that the building’s presence will be a catalyzer for growth for the entire district as well as Copenhagen. Slate Cabin di Trias | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/trias-slate-cabin/5105518 Fri, 15 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 Slate Cabin is a writer’s retreat perched on the edge of Snowdonia National Park in Mid Wales. The building is set in a lush green valley that is ringed by barren, windswept hills and grazing pastures. In response to this beautiful and yet harsh landscape, the cabin is a reductive black box that is anchored to the ground. It provides protection and respite to visitors who wish to escape the wind, rain and snow. Slate Cabin is inspired by the very bedrock of Wales, a country built on - and of - slate. Wales is a unique landscape, scattered with stone-strewn mountains, abandoned quarries and old slate homes, which have stood for hundreds of years. These qualities encouraged us to base our design around this local and historically significant material. Slate Cabin is envisaged as a visual infrastructure for collecting and cataloguing Welsh slate. The exterior of the cabin is covered in local stone, which is fixed to the building like oversized shingles. These recycled slate tiles… continue

The Light box - Restroom for Women di Rohan Chavan | Therapy centres / spas https://www.architonic.com/en/project/rohan-chavan-the-light-box-restroom-for-women/5105515 Thu, 14 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 “In a warm climate like India people have a very different relationship to built form. One needs but minimal protection, such as a chhatri (an overhead canopy), during the day. In the early morning and at night, the best place to be is outdoors, under the sky." - Charles Correa ‘Restroom’ is not just a polished word for toilet, here a Restroom is a public toilet that is unique in terms of both form and function. Beyond the obvious toilet blocks, the Restrooms aim to provide women an exclusive social space, something that is a typical of urban landscape in India. The design of the restroom has been conceptualized around a tree for two reasons. One to express the idea of integrating nature and context in the built form and using its characteristics to protect from climate. Secondly the shade of the tree protects the garden below from the sun allowing filtered light, and then it only needs a transparent cover to protect from rain. This intervention helped to maintain the light qua… continue

Located in the historical town center of Feldkirch, the organically curved architecture of the building detaches itself from the existing small-scale and heterogeneous urban-structure. Like a rock in the river, the new cultural center lies embedded in the urban context of existing squares.   The building provides space for congresses, balls, exhibitions, concerts and stage performances. The restaurant located on top of the building allows the visitors to enjoy scenic views over Feldkirch. The guests will enter the natural stone cladded building from Rössle square. Artisan House di Morphogenesis | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/morphogenesis-artisan-house/5105511 Wed, 13 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 Through the Artisan House project, Morphogenesis looks to revive and re-establish a patronage for traditional Indian artisanal skills. India is symbolized by the diversity of its art and culture, yet with the changing paradigm there is a great need to conserve these symbols that are under a growing threat of neglect. Craft, emergent from skill and handed-down traditions is inherent in Indian culture, and is strongly representative of the global understanding of luxury today- that of the hand-made, bespoke, one that speaks of its provenance. Additionally, luxury in this project is expressed through the dexterity and beauty of spatial configurations, lending the space an experiential quality through the incorporation of craft, material, method and design. The design exploits the terrain on which the project is located, to create two different levels that are instrumental in segregating functions. A large house intended to include a large extended family at times of celebration an… continue

The British School di Morphogenesis | Schools https://www.architonic.com/en/project/morphogenesis-the-british-school/5105510 Wed, 13 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0100 Morphogenesis’ design vision for The British School in New Delhi, found inspiration in the school’s tagline- ‘An International education with an Indian soul’. With this project, Morphogenesis set out to provide a strong cultural context to the international format of education this institution provides. Located centrally in Delhi, space itself was a constraint. Its population of 650 students was to be doubled to 1300. The principal challenge was to construct the new building on the existing site without disrupting the existing school that would become redundant eventually. The only constructible space available enveloped the existing premises, presenting construction, phasing and health and safety challenges. A strategic approach to phasing was adopted in the form of Phase I comprising of a perimeter block to transfer and accommodate existing operations. Phase II, being built on the vacated footprint of the old school, houses additional classrooms, laboratories, sports facilities, arts… continue
