Labcase- travel in space
This is how digital nomads travel through the coworking space: Labcase: the mobile suitcase office provides a micro workplace in no time at all, where it is needed. Two interconnected components on four wheels each pull out to create a ready-to-use workstation with power connection. In the front module, a folding table and lamp are mounted. In the back module there is a lockable compartment and a shelf, which acts as both a privacy screen and acoustic shield. Lined up side by side, the labcases function as room dividers and can form entire corridors; or otherwise structure areas with considerable variance in floor plan. Labcase affords a means to do digital work whilst temporarily making use of multifunctional spaces, in open office landscapes, as well as for instance, in academic halls. Labcase is an acoustically effective space-wonder on a modest scale. The user only has to pull up a seat and they are ready to go…

wd3_spatial design was founded by Frank Westermann and Michael Daubner in 2016. Their work focuses on the development of modular furniture as well as spatial structures for new working and learning environments and for homes. They cover the entire product process, from conception and construction to design and product communication. Their many years of development and project experience have resulted in the product Xbrick®, which is manufactured and distributed by wd3_spatial design itself. Xbrick® is a multifunctional furniture for sitting, laying, standing and designing temporary and flexible space concepts. The functionality and sustainability of Xbrick® responds to the currently rapidly changing needs of users for changeable and adaptive room solutions. Especially in the working and learning area, Xbrick® as modular and multifunctional furniture accompanies everyday life and adapts to the physical requirements of learning and working styles. With Xbrick® and its wooden accessories a wide range of seating furniture, standing desk, and working tables or presentation modules can be built. The multiple use of the Xbrick® is an important aspect of sustainability - as is the choice of sensible materials and production processes. The experimentation and development field of Xbrick® can be seen in the further development of material variants, such as the current variant made of hemp shreds and mycelium. The plant-mushroom based prototype of the multifunctional stool, grown from two halves, shows the possibilities of bio-based materials in product design. The first prototypes in the same dimension with internal rib structure, grip holes, logo and surface treatment as well as product tests show the potential of alternative manufacturing processes and design processes with mycelium. Design is more than form, because it is not limited to the language of form, but also includes aspects such as the choice of materials, the design of functioning cycles and manufacturing processes, and the possible uses of a product. The more flexible and universally usable a product is, the better it is. Products that are monofunctional or only represent a very narrow usage model are no longer up to date. Good design must allow, permit, and encourage adaptations by users and also signal this. Easy access is just as important as triggering a positive impulse in the user. The impact goes beyond the actual product, which in turn can be used to trigger other behaviors. To achieve this, we work our way to the very core of a product. Adaptive furniture series for wp_westermann products wd3_spatial design is also behind the concept of wp_westermann products. Westermann GmbH + Co KG relies on the team from the Stuttgart-based design and development office for the entire product development process. A common understanding of what constitutes good design underlies the entrepreneurial collaboration. When it comes to sustainability, they are on the same path. Together, they develop products that derive their longevity from their multifunctional usability and consider aspects such as single-variety materials, short transport routes and a functioning material cycle from the very beginning. Michael Daubner is a trained master carpenter, wood technician and was a master student of Arno Votteler. He studied at the Art Academy in Stuttgart at the Institute for Interior Architecture and Furniture Design. He has over thirty years of experience in the development of modular room structures and lightweight construction concepts and spent many years at the helm of an internationally oriented medium-sized company.
