Architecture festival TURN ON 2019 will take place from 7 - 9 March 2019 at the RadioKulturhaus in Vienna.

Architecture in the context of TURN ON always means "building culture". This means that the functional requirements of a building task are fulfilled, but this is also interpreted in the cultural sense. The house protects against rain, wind and cold - and it provides security and atmosphere, it is an aesthetic construct. In the best case, it not only serves vital purposes but also enables a better life.

Building culture is closely connected with our life; This also applies to their creation process, which is strongly influenced by political decisions. How quality building is possible is a complex question. This year's keynote speaker, Leo Van Broeck, speaks of quality as a bridge between architecture and politics. The talk will take up the topic and ask for quality assurance in the process from the ambitious draft to the completed building.

TURN ON PARTNER presents a kaleidoscope of contemporary buildings. The dense lecture programme at the interface between architecture and business will continue to address key topics from the previous year and find new definitions. The topic of project development is presented on the basis of a small community, a city centre and in a metropolitan context. Particular attention is again on housing with social aspiration and a wide range of functions. However, the emergence of ambitious architecture is also marked by innovative materials and constructions, as well as by new topics such as smart energy, the intelligent use of daylight and digital planning methods. The interior is further presented as a built identity – and as a room with solemn lighting.

TURN ON presents every year the different design strategies of mainly Austrian, but also international architects. The current lectures each tell a story: that of socially committed housing, the modern interpretation of townhouses in the small town, the unconventional neighbourhood in the big city, but also the city villas in dialogue with listed buildings.

Another narrative arch spans three structurally and spatially consistent buildings for education; another three health centres with a completely different architectural gesture. After all, it is about singular construction tasks: two very different cultural buildings and a large complex of buildings for the judiciary in a prominent position. Continuing building as the central theme of European architecture is being re-examined with projects in Caldaro and Bratislava. The day concludes with the new programme item TURN ON STUDIO. In two lectures, students present selected works for Salzburg and Seestadt Aspern. The respective leaders of the design programme give an overview as well as an outlook on future projects.
