MAISON&OBJET ASIA designer of the year 2015: NERI&HU

A multicultural, multi-talented duo
Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu perfectly embody the qualities sought in MAISON&OBJET ASIA’s designer of the year: representing the essence of Asian culture while having a truly international outlook.
Lyndon Neri was born in the Philippines, Rossana Hu in Taiwan, and both studied architecture in the United States (Harvard for him, Princeton for her, Berkeley, where they met).
After working in the US, they taught in the Architecture Department at Hong Kong
University before flying off to Shanghai, where they worked for the American architect Michael Graves.

It was in Shanghai in 2004 that they founded the concept store ‘’Design Republic‘’ and the firm Neri & Hu, focusing on architecture, interior decoration and graphic design. Sensitive to the cultural, historical and urban context of each project, they anchored their work in a dynamic interaction of experience, materials, forms and light instead of sticking to a stereotyped style.
The pair, which the UK named Wallpaper’s 2014 designers of the year, have received numerous awards such as the AR House Awards, AR Awards for Emerging Architecture, World Architecture Festival, and the Festival Inside Award

Rising Asian Talents

Upholding the spirit of MAISON&OBJET to nurture talents and promote creativity,
MAISON&OBJET ASIA presents the annual ‘Rising Asian Talents Awards’ to recognise outstanding young designers in the region by showcasing their works. Our winners of 2015 are from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Shanghai, Singapore and Taiwan. Come and exchange ideas with these future stars of the design world in the show.

1. Outofstock – Singapore
Two Singaporeans, a Spaniard and an Argentinian, the Outofstock collective, itself born in Sweden, is eminently multicultural. Furniture, lighting, spatial design—their multifaceted studio has produced designs for Ligne Roset (France), Industry+ (Singapore / Japan) and Environment (USA). Their chairs, tables and light fixtures have won numerous awards in Europe and Asia.

2. Wonmin Park – Korea
Wonmin Park studied and founded his studio in Eindhoven in 2011. Somewhere between
practical products and works of art, his colored resin furniture evokes abstract paintings.
Winner of the 2014 Wallpaper* Design Awards and the Global Star Award from the Korean Institute of Design in 2014, Park will soon exhibit his work at the
Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Paris and London.

3. Poetic Lab – Taiwan
Designers Hanhsi Chen Shikai Tseng, trained in Taiwan and London, share a creative
philosophy leading them to write poetry with objects. Based in London, the duo has won numerous awards, including the Design Report Award and the Salone Satellite Award. Their works are in the permanent collection of the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.

4. Zhang Zhoujie – China
In his works, which are based on the idea of ‘’spontaneity‘’, the Chinese designer Zhang
Zhoujie reveals the properties of materials and shapes, combining the traditional perspectives of Chinese art with a Western approach to design. He has won prestigious awards such as the ELLE Deco Young Designer of the Year award and the IF Design Award China.

5. Monica Tsang - Hong Kong
The contrast between differing and unusual sensibilities fascinates Monica Tsang. The
design aesthetics of this Hong Kong native are marked by her time in the UK, Germany, Italy and China. After receiving a Red Dot Design Concept Award in 2006 and a Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award, she launched her studio in 2013. Her favorite material: ceramics.

6. Abie Abdillah – Indonesia
A designer based in Jakarta, Abie Abdillah is passionate about rattan. Its local abundance (80% of the world’s production comes from Indonesia) and its intrinsic qualities, strength and flexibility, make it the perfect material for him. With his contemporary furniture creations, Abie hopes to revive interest in rattan and to stimulate its declining industry in his country.
