Antonio Citterio demonstrates his virtuosity once again with his new collection for MAXALTO, ”Fluid Spaces”, a quartet of sculptural designs that lend themselves to being freely arranged.

What was new at Salone 2019 from the B&B Italia high-end brand Maxalto? This short video sheds some light

Musically speaking, the architect Antonio Citterio acts as the great conductor, the maestro of the Maxalto brand. All four products (with their many variants) that premiered at the 2019 Fuorisalone were designed by the renowned architect. Citterio calls the theme of the quartet ”Fluid Spaces”, a name which communicates how all four furniture pieces can be placed freely in a room – or as he puts it, they have ”fewer references to walls”. As such, they are more like sculptures that can be enjoyed from all sides.

The new storage unit ”Tesaurus," for example, does not necessarily have to be placed as a side-board in a corner or against a wall but can play the main role in any space: centre stage, so to speak. It is available in three different heights and widths, with two or four doors and with drawers or flap doors. One can also choose from three kinds of woods: a light oak wood, a Marple frisé and a semi-glossy shellac type finish Tineo wood from Chile with a strong grain that is variably arranged, horizontally and vertically, to create a surprising visual effect. The vertical lines in the wood remind one of books on a shelf.

The "Apollo" sofa family takes the "fluid" theme further, with curved lines and in one case, no less than ten pillows that can be freely fitted as desired. There is also a chaise longue version of the ”Apollo" with the qualities to be placed in the middle of a room. Apart from that, Mr Citterio has returned to the Caratos family of chairs to extend it. Here you can find a model for every kind of situation, ranging from a variety of armchairs with and without armrests to a tub armchair; and now there are even stools in two heights with swivel seats, a bench and an ottoman plus coffee tables to go with the Caratos line. A die-cast aluminium-base in various finishings is the common thread, making the series clearly recognisable and tying the family together.

The bed "Dike” is the fourth Maxalto product that is new in 2019. Its unusually-sized headboard is made of two upholstered panels with a three-dimensional texture, each 2 metres high and 125 centimetres wide. Even when Dike is placed in the middle of a larger room, its headboard still imbues a feeling of cosiness and protection. A dream come true.
