The international Detail prizes are presented by Detail every two years in cooperation with Bavaria's Chamber of Architects and the Bavarian section of the German Architectural Federation. Presented for the third time this year, the slogan of the award is »Aesthetics and Construction«. The prize money totalling 29,000 euros is awarded for completed architectural projects which are distinguished to a special degree by well-designed, future-oriented and technically innovative details within an outstanding overall design. Newly extended categories have placed increased focus on inter-industry relationships and have reinforced the interdisciplinary network. This year the prize award ceremony, which attracted more than 350 international guests, took place in the form of a gala and forum for architects at the splendid Künstlerhaus in Munich.

The main prize went to FAM architectura y urbanismo from Madrid, together with Schlaich Bergermann & Partner from Stuttgart, for the M-11 Memorial in the centre of Madrid. The memorial has been erected as a tribute to the victims of the terror attacks on 11 March 2004. The memorial site itself is below ground, and during daylight hours it is lit via a massive, elliptical glass construction which appears above ground as a memorial. At night the glass cylinder is illuminated and dominates the surrounding area. The award was presented by Detail editor in chief Christian Schittich, who quoted the verdict of the jury, which praised the innovative spirit of the work and the consistent implementation of the project, saying that it would lead both to a new interpretation of the theme of the memorial and to a novel approach to detail in design and construction.
