Sometimes, a stroke of genius can be perfectly simple – as Elite Beds proves with its latest creation. A boxspring bed made entirely of natural components: the WoodenBoxspring. Based in western Switzerland, the company accomplished the innovation in collaboration with Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) by developing filigree yet hardwearing wooden springs as a natural alternative to their conventional metal counterparts.

“Customers have become more demanding, especially here in Switzerland,” explains François Pugliese, CEO of Elite Beds. “They don’t just want a mattress or a bed any more, they want to know what’s in it and where the materials come from.” In the case of Elite Beds, the answer is very simple: the vast majority are from Switzerland. The solid wood for the wooden springs and the wool and blond horsehair used for the inner lining of the mattress come from local producers. “Our intention is to source everything we possibly can from Switzerland, even if that means higher costs,” says Pugliese. In the Aubonne factory, both the mattresses and the various headboards are assembled and sewn by hand. Every bed that leaves the factory is thus unique, and the workmanship that goes into the products is meticulous.

The company’s wealth of experience is based on 121 years of history. But as traditional as its methods might be, it takes a highly innovative approach to product development. Besides standard beds, it also makes models equipped with sensors that detect whether the user is snoring and change the position of his body accordingly, or can monitor sleep patterns or breathing in the case of various illnesses. In fact, when it comes to design, virtually anything is possible. The company even integrated a safe into one customer’s bed!
