The renowned showcase of international consumer goods trends is back with bora.herke.palmisano (Claudia Herke, Cem Bora and Annetta Palmisano). On behalf of Messe Frankfurt, the trend bureau picks up on the relevant trends and, on the basis of the themes, selects suitable products for the Ambiente 2024 exhibitors presented to the public from 26 to 30 January 2024. The results of the research are divided into three style worlds: AURA OF PROGRESS_visionary + elemental; QUALITY OF SILENCE_pure + familiar; and SPIRIT OF CRAFT_bold + poetical. Together they emanate a visionary aura, celebrating the luxury of silence and focus on new compositions. Sustainability runs through all the styles and living spaces of the upcoming Ambiente Trends 24+, even more consistently than before. At the same time, material research into improved recycling management produces exciting aesthetic solutions, while craftsmanship is reinterpreted and refined through digital innovations and 3D techniques.

‘In uncertain times, it’s not about searching for a short-lived theme. Instead, Ambiente Trends pick up on important developments and continue them, each with its own focus. An unusual use of materials and colours, innovative technologies, elemental elements, a sustainable ethos and material alternatives or the multifaceted art of handicrafts set their own focal points this year. All living themes are united by a conciliatory perspective that preserves the familiar and welcomes the future,’ says Annetta Palmisano, trend expert at trend bureau bora.herke.palmisano.

Elemental force meets futurism

AURA OF PROGRESS_visionary + elemental sharpens the visitor’s and consumer’s attention for progressive ways of looking at things and stands for a fascinating interplay of opposites. Elemental force meets futurism, and archaic elements combine with hyper-innovative technology. For digital and also AI-supported design processes enhance traditional craft methods. Ecological, resource-saving approaches are decisive for many designers. The results are not only fascinating and novel, but also sustainable: a living theme that inspires and grounds us at the same time.

The colour palette is radiant and vibrant, where the digital world merges with the physical. It spans from warm, vibrant hues like violet, intense solar yellow, and glowing lava to cool, light-flooded shades of aqua and mineral tones. Neutral components, such as a shimmering cloud tone and deep gray, characteristically contrast this palette. The deliberate union of strong materials like wood, steel, and stone with futuristic elements is a central focus. Rough and uneven surfaces, even inspired by aged materials like rust, take the spotlight. Additionally, conceptual fragrances and innovatively interpreted LED technology further enrich this living theme, casting a captivating glow over the entire space.

Discovering the special in simple

QUALITY OF SILENCE_pure + familiar discovers the special in the simple and reflects the need for calm and clarity. Positive colours and simple, sustainable materials allow the consumer to experience warmth, tranquility and comfort as the real luxury. The appreciation for existing raw materials and the work on a future worth living in is reflected in the entire design with a holistic living theme that is puristic and soothing at the same time.

Natural material colours, sunlit pastels, and lightened tones define this palette, featuring warm terracotta, wood tones, straw yellow, neutral ecru, sand tones, cool gray, blue, and sage. Familiar materials break free from their original context, with resource recycling being a priority. Everyday resources are given new meaning, utilizing principles of circular design and compostable bioplastics. Design and art boundaries blur, with individually processed objects celebrating the aesthetics of everyday life, simple rituals, and appreciation.

The poetic nature of crafts

The third 2024 trend, SPIRIT OF CRAFT_bold + poetical, brings together diverse influences in a bold and poetic manner and is characterised by striking shapes, bold combinations and a sophisticated colour palette. Craft skills merge with a modern aesthetic, embodying personal touch and durability. Flexibility is treasured as products adapt to our ever-changing living circumstances.

The colour palette combines warm amber, brandy, and chili tones with neutral grey and sepia, complemented by cool lapis lazuli, glass green, and turquoise. Craft skills and forgotten materials and techniques give rise to truly unique objects, such as the fusion of copper and hot enamel, which creates mesmerising colours and unpredictable shades. Vintage pieces and motifs from manufacturers’ archives find new life as key materials like ceramics offer unimagined design possibilities, with hand-painted motifs and hand-worked structures emphasising their unique character. Meanwhile, textiles and rugs take on objets d’art aesthetics, featuring elaborate handicraft techniques, confident patterns, and wide-area appliqués, creating products reminiscent of large-format graphics, collages, and reliefs.
