The need to create a protected shelter, at a location of disarming view, but openly exposed to strong north winds, led us to the decision to drill the slope, instead of arranging a set of spaces in line at ground level. We applied a rectangular grid to the slope to produce a three-dimensional “chessboard” of solids and voids that accommodate and, at the same time, isolate the residence quarters. This strict geometry is discontinued with the rotation of the last axis of the grid, which provides the living area with ampler view. Shifting the axis intensifies the sense of perspective significantly, and thus the imprint of the residence appears minimized at the conceptual end of the ascent. Longitudinal walls of dry stone outline and protect the interior and exterior spaces. They consist the vertical borders, which lead the visitor's gaze to the horizon line. House in El Torón de IUA Ignacio Urquiza Arquitectos | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/iua-ignacio-urquiza-arquitectos-house-in-el-toron/20203834 Mon, 21 Jun 2021 23:00:00 +0200 El Torón Reserve is located on the coast of Oaxaca, at the southernmost point of the Mexican Pacific coastline and a few kilometers from Mazunte, between Mermejita and Ventanilla beaches. It is a protected 30-hectare area characterized by mixed vegetation and rugged topography, with steep cliffs and hilltops creating hard-to-reach spots and a unique natural beauty. The House in El Torón is the first to be designed within this reserve, and its conception emerged from two premises that enabled us to question and rethink the idea of a house on the coast. The first was to show maximum respect for the site, and the second was to seek to understand and learn from the vernacular and contemporary architecture of the region, which represents so many years of accumulated wisdom and experience, and tends to offer unmatched functionality. <b>Context.</b> Since the 1970s, architects like Marco Aldaco, Mario Lazo, Diego Villaseñor and José Yturbe presented a ‘new architecture of the sea’ with… continue

The two cabins for two people each are located in Matanzas, Navidad, approximately 2 ½ hours from Santiago. Placed 80 meters above sea level on the Lagunilla hill, the cabins rise in front of the “Lobera”, a large rock mass jutting out of the sea, home to sea lions and other native species. Matanzas has become a world capital for Windsurfing and Kitesurfing, thanks to its outstanding wind and wave conditions. Both these elements were purposefully incorporated into the development of the project. The design process was conceived as an opportunity for experimentation, looking for a way to both ‘dominate’ the steep slope and blend in with the surrounding nature. “La Loica” & “La Tagua”, both named after bird species native to the region, are placed on the ravine using a wooden pilon structure that supports the main platform, over which the programme is developed. Each structure is resolved in few square meters, 20m2 for “… continue

It is faced with a walking path with a row of cherry trees and a small stream. In the back runs a highway among the rustic scenery. We then made a goal to produce dialogues with the scenery in the architectural space which is built in such an environment as described above, and to meet the client’s request for a house where they can live a prosperous life. The exterior is composed of volumes based on carefully examined proportion, window layout, and materials. The overhanging cantilever which gives some impression to the exterior is effectively used as an eaves for an approach to the entrance or a parking lot. The entrance hall with a low ceiling is a flexible space that can also be used for the client’s shop. The tranquil view and light from the limited opening area produce comfortableness which is unique to this space, inducing communication. In order to interpret these new work concepts into space, the coworking brand Cloudworks asked us to design their newest space in the centre of Barcelona –A penthouse giving way to 360 degrees views to the city. Incorporating the brand’s identity and that of its community, we build an office based on three key design principles, in constant dialogue: Function, identity and wellbeing. <b>How to combine the private and public, the outside and inside: the office as one continuous whole </b> Even more so in current times, it’s become clear that the office is more than just a place to work and concentrate. Parkeergarage A1 de XVW architectuur | Industrial buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/xvw-architectuur-parkeergarage-a1/20203298 Sat, 19 Jun 2021 23:00:00 +0200 XVW architectuur has completed a community car park incorporating a health centre at ground level in Buiksloterham in the north of Amsterdam. Buiksloterham is a fast- developing work/live area stretching across a former industrial waterfront. The new building responds to this forward looking spirit with its sleek geometric exterior and landmark quality that create a sense of arrival to Buiksloterham. The car park is part of a masterplan drawn up by Studio Nine Dots for the de Alliantie housing corporation. By concentrating parking in the neighbourhood, local streets are freed from stationary vehicles allowing food markets, among other civic activities, to spill into the public realm. This less conventional and more flexible approach to urban design is led by residents and focusses on opportunities for self-build homes, a provision for social housing and work/home units. Attracting both collectives and small-scale developers is key to this inclusive vision for Buikslotrham. continue

Origami House de Bernardes Arquitetura | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/bernardes-arquitetura-origami-house/20203297 Sat, 19 Jun 2021 23:00:00 +0200 Origami House is the main residence of a couple who decided to flee the rush of the big city to settle 50 minutes away of the capital. They receive frequent visits from their children and grandchildren. The house has three bedrooms, a comfortable office, kitchen and social area (living, dining, and balcony integrated) on the ground floor. The living room is integrated with the balcony through large glass window frames. On the lower floor are three guest rooms. The clients wanted a practical, single-story house that had all the amenities they needed to live and work integrated into their everyday environments. The use of concrete is the trademark of the house. The folding concrete slab, like an origami, establishes the house’s lateral boundary and volume that houses its social sector. The concrete protects the west façade of the residence from the afternoon sun and directs the view toward the east where we have the morning sun and the view of the native forest. Clifftops de Morrow + Lorraine | Hotel interiors https://www.architonic.com/en/project/morrow-lorraine-clifftops/20203296 Sat, 19 Jun 2021 23:00:00 +0200 Clifftops comprises five newly-completed luxury holiday lodges by London architecture studio Morrow + Lorraine, set into the rugged landscape of the spectacular Jurassic coast on the Isle of Portland, Dorset. The site is located on part of the UNESCO World Heritage Coast, directly above a Site of Special Scientific interest between Bow and Arrow Castle, which is a scheduled Ancient Monument, and Grade II Listed Pennsylvania Castle. Taken in tandem with the extreme sensitivity of the setting, a clear design concept emerged: the building should appear hewn from the ground, rather than built upon it. As such, the lodges are set into the rugged cliff by large, rough-cleaved blocks of local Portland’s Albion stone. Indigenous to Portland, the stone is the most natural choice; cut only minutes away from the Pennsylvania Estate, it anchors the architecture to its locale, yields a low carbon footprint and is long lasting. Completely succumb to the here and now. Find yourself. Make space for your real needs. Simply let yourself be – far from the urban hustle and bustle. There remain some small, hidden paradises where you can do all this. In Oderbruch near the German-Polish border in Sophienthal, for example. A romantic retreat for anyone wanting to be at one with nature. This is where the Black Cabins are located. Lovingly designed gardens adjoin endless rolling fields – a view that invites you to linger. Take your morning shower in the open air. Eat lunch overlooking the rolling landscape. And spend the evening hours stargazing around an open fire. There is probably nowhere better to do this than here in Oderbruch, with a total of 4,000 square metres of open space not far from trendy Berlin. The combination with PerfectSense Matt in U999 PM Black impressively highlights the simple elegance of the PerfectSense Topmatt worktop with edge in F206 PT Black Pietra Grigia. The functionality of the PerfectSense Topmatt laminate is a special highlight of this exclusive kitchen. The velvety-warm, super-matt surface with anti-fingerprint properties sets special haptic accents. The matt-black surfaces take away some of the visual heaviness of the marbled worktop and at the same time emphasise its natural and exclusive look. With the black-cemented floor, a charming contrast is created that aesthetically brings the elegance of the kitchen to the fore. With sufficient natural light sources, the black environment resembles a cosy den of retreat. Fuzzy's Woodart, Michelhausen (AT), www.fuzzyswoodart.at continue

Bartending school de EGGER | Manufacturer references https://www.architonic.com/en/project/egger-bartending-school/20202031 Thu, 17 Jun 2021 00:00:00 +0200 The room of the spirits manufacturer Schwarze und Schlichte in Oelde (DE), equipped with seven-metre high shelves, is definitely worth seeing. In order to not only make optimum use of the room height, but to be convincing in terms of design, the team of RSA Architekten Lippstadt decided to use H3303 ST10 Hamilton Oak. This decor is ideal for large surfaces, as the striking textures are not repeated frequently due to the XL repeat. The warm, natural colour scheme of this decor also gives the room its typical feel-good character. Hamilton Oak can be perfectly combined with uni colours. This is why the architects chose PerfectSense Topmatt in U999 PT Black, which not only gives the room elegance but also demonstrates a high degree of functionality: Its velvety soft feel and robust surface make it ideal for the surfaces of the reception desk and the front of the sideboard. Working at home is a proven possibility, but certainly not the basis of an ultimate working process. From that perspective, they have chosen a beautiful location at the Amsterdam harbors, close to the city center, yet in the middle of the roughness that suits outdoor sports. On the inside, in addition to creating an appealing “Red Bull design”, they strive for a comfortable and well-thought-out interior. One of the reasons why the pitch proposal of Casper Schwarz Architects was chosen as the winning design. Red Bull’s former accommodation was an abstract indoor skate park-like office. Extraordinary but with some annotations. The new location offers deep and well-engineered spaces with wide views over the harbor on both sides. It was commissioned by Westspitze Gewerbebau GmbH & Co. The client expressly requested a building with high ecological standards and the use of wood for the supporting structure. In terms of energy efficiency, the KfW 55 standard had to be met; a demanding goal for an office building. At the beginning of the planning process, various challenges arose, starting with the oblique-angled shape of the site. The façade design also required an innovative solution. Following this premise, Casa Ter aims to create a personal sense of place, in close contact with all elements it’s surrounded by. <b>Using local building materials:</b> Casa Ter is located in Baix Empordà, an area that functions as an intersection between three natural landscapes: sea, mountain, and field. In order to make this context tangible to its users, the home is made out of two volumes which create three different spaces, each branching out towards one of the surrounding landscapes, touching as little of the natural surroundings as possible. Following the local construction traditions of the region, the walls of C… continue

Landscape House de FORM / Kouichi Kimura Architects | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/form-kouichi-kimura-architects-landscape-house/20200946 Sun, 13 Jun 2021 23:00:00 +0200 Located in a relatively spacious residential area, the house has been built with the client-run hair salon attached. There’s a park across the front road from the site. The area allows to closely view Mt. Ibuki, one of 100 famous Japanese mountains. In such conditions, I came up with the architecture that would bring out good living environment while laying out the volumes of the requested shop and of the residential part in an appropriate proportion. The building is composed of symmetrical volumes for which the proportion, openings, and materials have been carefully considered. The dynamic form creates a new façade in the streetscape. The first floor consists of the hair salon, residential entrance hall, and bathroom. LDK (living, dining and kitchen area) is laid out as well as bed rooms and children’s rooms on the second floor. The LDK has varied ceiling heights and has been planned to make the room including the stair hall as one continuous space. It can be loosely divided wit… continue

In keeping with the pace of the times, Fuyang District of Hangzhou is embarking on a new glorious journey. Qinwang City Eye, the large-scale development master-planned by China Jinmao Holdings Group Limited, is like a brilliant pearl on the map of Hangzhou and is depicting a modern version of the legendary Chinese landscape painting "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains". As a part of Qinwang City Eye, Jinmao Star in the Bund · Qin Wang Fu Exhibition Hall conceived by CCD provides a new window for showcasing the urban culture of Fuyang. Drawing inspiration from the landscape elements of the nearby Fuchun River, the design concept "living water from the source" is drawn out. The interior design is well coordinated with architecture and landscape, together creating a modern and elegant city exhibition hall with a rich context. It was the beginning of a friendly relationship that formed the basis for an extraordinary cooperation. "When I design," says Anna Philipp, “ I always focus on the people I build for and the specific place where I build. For me, it was a privilege to be able to design a home for such a strong family. The appreciation and trust placed in me from the very beginning was extraordinary and gave me my inspirational wings." The place where Villa Fröschle was conceived is certainly not a location that deserves the triple A title. This does not mean that the property has no attractive attributes; however, these were severely affected by a commercial enterprise directly adjacent to the south and the streets on two sides of the plot. It houses the headquarters of three different companies distributed throughout three open floor plans. Both ground floor and penthouse spaces are shared by all the users. The façade is composed of a package of different layers that filter light and sound. The outermost skin is a lattice of perforated aluminum that covers the upper working floors, which is followed by a green buffer and special soundproof windows. Work spaces occupy open plans that are made possible by concrete waffle slabs that are supported by peripheral columns and load-bearing walls. Building installations, vertical circulations and columns are all located around the perimeter of the building. The ephemeral installation, a 1,000 SQF miniature sculptural forest consisting of more than 1,200 forestry seedling kokedamas nested within an inverted dome carved out from a fragile and intricate metal network, has received exceptional recognition from both the audience and the organization, being honored with a total of three awards: The Gold Medal, The Governor’s Trophy for the Landscape major exhibit that demonstrates most innovative or unique design and the Special Achievement Award of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania. <b>A sustainable installation with a second life</b> As part of the project philosophy, after its run in the Philadelphia Flower Show, ending on June 13, Kokedama… continue

Its façade is integrated with the traditional houses of the old town, thanks to its white textures and the bougainvillea that climb it. Once through the door, we enter a world of our own full of creativity, design and craftsmanship, where solid volumes and wide spaces coexist with natural elements that give the place an identity that speaks to the white villages of Andalusia. On the ground floor we find a distribution in which the visual axes are enhanced through large windows, connecting the reception patio with a garden full of vegetation in which a small pool invites you to rest. The main space of the house has a height of almost 4 meters, which gives it identity without losing the feeling of seclusion and warmth. The well-known building was opened on October 1, 2014 and is a real asset to Rotterdam and embodies what the city has to offer. From privately developed apartments to various market stalls and restaurants, it is a perfect illustration of ‘synergistic possibilities’. It shows how a building can transcend the status of a mere structure and become a social hub, a market, a gathering place and most importantly a home to those who use it. With all this potential the building owners wanted to make sure to deliver the optimal experience. The building has faced a temperature dilemma across the various seasons in the Netherlands and the challenge was finding a cost effective solution that keeps the market hall vendors happy and comfortable. Humphrey Metrodome served as the home of the Minnesota Vikings. In 2013, the roof collapsed under the weight of heavy snow, signaling the end of one iconic stadium and the beginning of another. As plans to rebuild got underway, the Vikings set the bar high. “With other stadiums in the marketplace being as sound as they are, and knowing the passion of our fan base, there was pressure to get this done, do it right and ensure that we include amenities that today’s fan wants,” said J.P. Paul, Vice President of Relations and Corporate Development, Minnesota Vikings. In 2016, after just 30 months of construction, the ribbon was cut on what is the largest project ever built in the state of Minnesota: U.S. Bank Stadium. After seeing the film in action, Burns and his business partner had 3M™ Safety & Security Window Films applied to the inside of their store’s exterior windows as well as the building’s doors with the hope that it would provide extra security, safeguard their merchandise and reduce UV exposure, one of the main causes of fading. Axel Springer Campus de OMA | Office buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/oma-axel-springer-campus/20199440 Mon, 07 Jun 2021 23:00:00 +0200 Axel Springer has launched a move from print to digital media. Its new building on the campus in Berlin acts both as a symbol and a tool in this transition - a building to lure the elite of (Germany’s) digital Bohemia. Bisected by a diagonal atrium that opens up to the existing Axel Springer buildings, the essence of the design is a series of terraced floors that together form a ‘valley’ that creates an informal stage at the centre - a place to broadcast ideas to other parts of the company. The genius of print is that it is a cheap, physical, hyper-accessible embodiment of a complex collective effort, for which so far the digital has been unable to find an equivalent. Architectural offices are similar to newspapers in that they produce complex assemblies and selections from radically different sources of information. As architects, we have experienced the advantages: speed, precision, smoothness. But we have also suffered one crucial consequence: the relationship between the work… continue

The hospital moved out in 2013 and the existing complex has been converted into a new headquarter for a family-run company designed by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin. The existing ensemble originates from a former seventeenth-century Capuchin monastery. The buildings, which were used as a hospital from 1841 onwards, were severely damaged during the Second World War. Subsequently, the complex underwent several changes and extensions through reconstruction and later modifications. The conversion for the Jacoby Studios involved the removal of the post-war additions, exposing the historic building fabric of the monastery once again. The practice’s first office building in Russia, the building reimagines the conventional cellular office to set new standards in quality, comfort and flexibility. The 15-storey building’s innovative modular office units are enveloped in an energy efficient enclosure, which provides a distinctive symbol for the organisation in Ekaterinburg. RCC is one of the world’s leading producers of copper and the triangulated form draws inspiration from the chemical structure of copper. The crown of the building integrates RCC’s new logo – a rebranding which has, in turn, been inspired by the architecture. The starting point for the office floors was to reinvent the headquarters as a ‘house for staff’ – instead of the conventional large, communal workspaces, the rooms are of a more intimate, domestic scale. A striking feature of the interior is the use of structural materials that you normally only see on construction sites. The architectural language of the project draws inspiration from the "dirty" and "rough" but at the same time its presented in a clean and sophisticated way. Along with the design concept, it was important to find the correct materials that will make the place feel timeless. And so, We used warm and natural materials such as exposed concrete blocks on the entrance wall, a parquet floor and wooden doors. The public area is covered by a terrazzo floor which usually appears in exterior spaces. The reception desk is designed in a minimalist language of concrete beam masses laid one on top of the other, bringing the concrete to the front of the stage and exposing the materials of the building instead of covering it. The unconventional proportions of the locality allowed fresh approaches in the use of space, while the specialised range of products on offer cried out for the right atmosphere. It was a matter of surmounting a culinary dogma in order to indulge in healthy food within an "attuned space". For this purpose, the space was fully emptied and the façade reconditioned as part of the building's renovation. The terms of interior design, a two-storey wooden framework was installed onto the internal peripheral walls - at a conscious distance from the façade. Carlsberg's central office is in Carlsberg's historic Carlsberg City District. The building consists of three wings, which unite in an atrium, the building’s central space. One of the wings forms a bridge over one of the neighbourhood's main access roads, creating a modern gateway similar to the famous classical ones that characterize the Carlsberg City. The other two wings embrace Carl Jacobsen's historic garden and villa. The atrium opens onto Carl Jacobsen's Garden overlooking Carlsberg City, where the long history of Carlsberg as a brewery business began and is still unfolding. The atrium connects all floors of the building, surrounded by communal areas and joining all the office sections, both vertically and horizontally, into one single working community,… continue

Previously occupying various offices in different locations, this YTL Headquarters located in Central Kuala Lumper (along Jalan Bukit Bintang) brings together for the first time, the entire suite of YTL departments (numbering more than a dozen, comprising 1000 staff members), each of which have developed their own culture and operations. The brief for MOD was to design the public areas shared by these departments, i.e. Ground Floor lobby and levels 8-10, and present a unified brand identity under one roof. As such, MOD sought to create a series of choreographed spatial experiences which aim to balance YTL’s legacy of corporate professionalism with a future-forward attitude that embraces change. <b>Design concept: To respect legacy and infuse futu… continue

Consisting essentially of a single room, the wood-framed cabin offers flexible space as a painting studio or a guesthouse. The back of the structure gently nestles into the hillside bounded by existing trees and boulders, enclosing a micro kitchen and bathroom. The front side cantilevers out over the slope, its open studio space circumscribed on three sides by floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The front wall breaks the square with a “magic” window that angles out to a point, opening the cabin to sweeping views of the water and islands beyond, along with creating an inspiring spot to set up an easel. Though the interior space is minimal, the design merges the cabin into its forested site with doors opening to decks extending off either side, allowing the modest quarters to feel more expansive. The hotel consists of three stacked triangular volumes, with the middle section rotated 90 degrees. The large overhangs which emerge as a result, in addition to providing a series of sheltered roof terraces, create the impression of a building defying gravity. Aluminum mullions, alternately spaced depending on the aspect, ridge the facade. Each mullion is triangular in profile, with either of its sides matt or polished, giving the facades their lenticular quality – shimmering as it shifts on the horizon. The form, initially derived from the triangular constraints of the site, also pays tribute to “Het Signaal”, the once prominent advertising totem on the Europaplein. The home is a marriage of spatial poetry and building science. The timeless craft of traditional New England construction is met with the most advanced building science principles and technologies resulting in a contemporary expression of rural American architecture that will last for generations. The site on which the client grew up as child in a colonial home rebuilt by their parents is located fifteen minutes south of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The original two story home on the property proved unsustainable for late life living and was relocated nearby for the client’s sister. Horris Hill is a day and boarding preparatory school for boys aged between 4 and 13, set within a rural campus in Berkshire. It is located on 85 acres containing woods, sports pitches, and a kitchen garden. This time Roarc Renew received a task themed at countryside renewing. We do believe with great certainty that the essential feature of a renewing project compared to a newly-built project is “conforming to the original energy field of the construction”. The soul of every renewing project is to find out the hidden flow and go with it. It is as if the bright moon cannot be seen before clouds move away. Certainly, the first thing is to identify which cloud should move away and how to move it away. This is the methodology Roarc Renew used in building renewing for the past years. <b>Alias as Lotus Granary.</b> At Wangjiangjing Town, there are two granaries nearby hundreds of acres of lotus marsh and the Taocangcanal. In addition to being one of the last examples of bold neoclassical architecture in the city of Antwerp, the museum houses a rich art collection that embraces seven centuries of art: from Flemish Primitives to expressionists, from paintings to drawings and sculptures. The Department of Culture, Youth, and Media of the Flemish Government has invested approximately 100 million euros in the overall renovation of the building. Located on one of the last remaining unoccupied beach front sites in Seminyak, the Potato Head Studios challenges the typical resort typology: the notion of “exclusivity” is abandoned; the resort is reconsidered as a part of the local community. Formentera Water Sports Center de Marià Castelló Architecture | Sports facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/maria-castello-architecture-formentera-water-sports-center/20195158 Tue, 18 May 2021 23:00:00 +0200 The port of La Savina is the main point of access to Formentera island. Its important geographical location makes it the border between an urban area, the Mediterranean Sea and a saltwater lake which forms part of Ses Salines Natural Park. Giving protection to the open sea, this lake has traditionally been used as a natural harbor to anchor small fishing boats. And, currently, the administration has deemed it suitable to house the municipal sailing school as well as other nautical sports and activities. The functional program offered a duality (classrooms + offices versus workshop + dressing rooms) that has divided the volumetry into two independent parts aligning the first one with Almadrava Street and the second one with the passage of Balandra. At the intersection of both streets, the building offers an empty space with its visual permeability that incorporates the main access to the equipment. Between the two described volumes, there is a structure that provides a chill-out zon… continue

Stainless steel frame wraps the entire façade from one end to the other and within its clear borders we chose to fold the partitions as if it was origami paper. Between the stainless steel reflections and playing with the angles of the partitions, a dramatic and unusual sight is revealed to the observer, changing as one moves in the space. The strong and long perspective look creates different layers of materials, of transparency and reflections making it hard to determine where one room starts and another ends. The monochromatic material use allows us to focus on the unique shapes and light reflections over the stainless steel frame and glass. Its inherent ancient wisdom as well as its pure and clean beauty have surpassed an awareness of East and West to gain universal acceptance. This beverage is healthy and suitable for social interactions. In the context of a new era, tea's dual advantages express it in more enriched and diverse ways, making it a suitable aspect of modern urban residents' lifestyles. The tea cosmetics brand Cosmetea subverts the previous definition of cosmetics by innovatively integrating tea with trendy cosmetics. It uses Tea Beauty Science to create modern fashion aesthetics based on natural Eastern sentiments. Nax Architects was entrusted to conceive a pop-up shop for the brand in Shanghai. Café, cocktail bar, buffet, night club, shop, boulevard and take away - including a bike drive through - occuppy the two floors (300 m2 in plan) for public and offer more than 100 seats of pleasant stay in the city's Kreis 4. In the spring the offer is supplemented with another 100 outside seats. The underground floor serves a large, 50-people communal table during the day. And it becomes the Club Perle at night. This hybrid myriad of uses is reflected in the open and flexible spatial organization. Held by a durable frame of concrete and rough brick, the most different surfaces, treatments and details differentiate them elegantly. The interior of the penthouse with a terrace was created for the famous artist and his family and became a platform for original architectural interior solutions. The advantage of these apartments is a fully glazed terrace, thanks to which residents always have the opportunity to enjoy the sun and natural light, as well as breathe the air without leaving the apartment. Architects placed a reception and recreation area there. The penthouse is decorated in a modern style, without unnecessary details or hints for classic style. The store in Gwanggyo—a new town just south of Seoul—is the sixth branch of Galleria. Located at the center of this young urban development surrounded by tall residential towers, the Galleria’s stone-like appearance makes it a natural point of gravity for public life in Gwanggyo. The store is located between the Suwon Gwanggyo Lake Park and ubiquitous buildings in the city: an intersection between nature and the urban environment. The store has a textured mosaic stone façade that evokes nature of the neighbouring park. Appearing as a sculpted stone emerging from the ground, the store is a visual anchor in the city. It was built on a degraded space that had previously been a parking lot for years. In the design assumptions, when thinking about the body of the building, it was crucial to adjust it to the already existing building which has a rather scattered façade and an asymmetrical gable roof. Therefore, we decided to create steep roofs broken with modern dormers. This combination of a traditional roof with a modern façade elements resulted in establishing a dialogue with the existing building. As the result, the building also changes with the angle of observation and its view becomes unobvious. The windows were also composed in a traditional arrangement, but their position was distorted. The shift has created a modern interpretation of the traditional pattern. Additionally, corner windows were used which added lightness and modernity. Th… continue

It is located on a plot of land with a surface area of 1,400 m². It participates in the renewal of the fringe of activities and is located along the rue Jules Vallès, accessible by vehicles from the allée René Hirel. The Cleunay sector presents a range of urban forms: residential fabric, suburban and collective housing estates from various periods as well as changing activity spaces. The building is set up by strictly observing an imposed setback, in order to align itself with the neighboring building, thus creating a coherence on the scale of a city entrance. The R+4 project surmounts 2 basement levels dedicated to parking. The unique volume of metallic materiality is made up of large double-height bays. The building’s plan consists in two apartments per floor. After almost fifty years of intensive use, the listed building required a comprehensive refurbishment. The functional and technical upgrades include air-conditioning, artificial lighting, security, and visitors’ facilities, such as the cloakroom, café, and the museum shop, as well as improving disabled access and art handling. The latest partitions of the postal building designed by the Bräm brothers were put into operation in 1930. Increasing digital communication gave leeway for new usage in some parts of the building. This opportunity was used to relocate the traditional vegetarian restaurant Hiltl and give it a new home in the front part of the Sihlpost building. 15 years ago Rolf Hiltl, owner of the restaurant, had the good sense to save the original post office counters, including lockboxes and miscellaneous other items of the Sihlpost from demolition. One of the challenges for architects was to find the optimal solution in a limited interior space. The advantage of the small space was the high ceilings and the glazing area, which maximized the penetration of natural light into interior space. The interior of the cafe assumed the creation of an attractive space for visitors, where guests could feel comfort having a pleasant conversation and a cup of aromatic coffee. The architects took the minimalist style as a basis, creating a striking image with cubic structures of metal and concrete, highlighted with light. Surrounding Sony Center are the traditional urban streets and spaces. Inside is a new type of covered, urban Forum for a changing cultural and social interaction of our time. The spatial dynamics and variety is contrasted by a minimal and technological attitude. Light, both natural and artificial, is the essence of the design. Sony Center is luminous, not illuminated. Façades and roof act as a fabric, which moderates the natural and artificial light. They become a screen.
