And behind these visually exciting design elements everything from intelligent use of local climatic conditions to materials reuse to connectedness is sustainable. "The key question was how to design a temporary exhibition and event space for up to three million visitors in a desert environment that was sustainable. LAVA’s solution linked the Expo theme of connectedness, with our approach of ‘more with less’, with humans interacting with nature and technology at its heart,” said Tobias Wallisser, director of LAVA. <b>1. BUILDING AS EXHIBIT: SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY</b> “The building design is part of the exhibition, a tool to connect people.” “We wanted to address the Expo motto 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and so we chose to represent Germany as a…

Gorch-Fock-Schule de Hadi Teherani | Schools https://www.architonic.com/en/project/hadi-teherani-gorch-fock-schule/20231574 Sun, 28 Nov 2021 23:00:00 +0100 This enlargement of the school represents further development of the historic building designed by Fritz Schumacher back in 1931 via the new auditorium while equally taking advantage of the difference in elevation on the grounds to reconceive the facilities for sports. The new assembly hall / auditorium annexed to the south containing a stage, servery for food and a terrace facing south combines the old and new buildings across the schoolyard and beyond. On the other hand, the new classrooms do not follow the symmetrical guideline set by the red-brick construction but are instead aligned with the running track on the sports area situated above – allowing corresponding options for expansion. As a result, the first-formers receive space for themselves beyond the track, while the last forms prepare themselves symbolically for ‘take-off’ to schools of higher education. Due to the curved, open-sided storey and the wing-like layout of the group zones enlarged by the mandatory corridor width,…

Chapireh Residential Build de Bio-Design Architects | Apartment blocks https://www.architonic.com/en/project/bio-design-architects-chapireh-residential-build/20231553 Sun, 28 Nov 2021 23:00:00 +0100 The most important ideas of building design were to pay attention to the context, cultural harmony, and to consider a new look at the native architectural patterns of the city texture. The Chapireh Residential Complex is located in Dezful City -The area is known as the city of bricks- A city that has a historical texture rich in brickwork, elements and brick decorations. Therefore, the most basic part of the work has been the appropriate use of the contextual approach in design. In this regard, several visits were made to the old parts of Dezful city and studies on the culture of the people of the region. Indigenous architectural patterns such as Sabat, entrance porch, lattice bricks, especially on roofs and windows, privacy in the facade and inside the building, alignment in the alleys (chapireh) and layers of bricks in the parts that are consoled, were some of the patterns that are considered more in design. The morphology and ziggurat shape of the historical texture towards…

Lighting concept for an ophthalmologist’s practise de Tobias Link | Doctors' surgeries https://www.architonic.com/en/project/tobias-link-lighting-concept-for-an-ophthalmologists-practise/20231551 Sun, 28 Nov 2021 23:00:00 +0100 <b>Seeing better with dynamic lighting</b> Tunable white lighting adds to comfort and convenience in an ophthalmology practice. Constantly changing lighting conditions are part of everyday life in an ophthalmologist’s office and have an influence on a person’s circadian rhythms. Both staff members and patients benefit particularly from lighting that changes according to the rhythm of light throughout the day. This is demonstrated in the refurbished offices of the eye consultants Augenspezialisten Saar in Püttlingen. <b>Making routine workflows simpler</b> The shift between light and dark determines the daily work routine in an ophthalmologist’s practice. External examinations of the eye, reading and colour tests require bright lighting of 1000 or 500 lux according to DIN 12464-1. The surroundings need to be darkened when examining the inner eye using a slit lamp and lens. These everyday situations require varying lighting levels. Generally, this means that doctors or their as…

Arkadia was to be fossil fuel-free, and the building allows for a carbon-free future. <b>Architecture:</b> We felt strongly about creating a sense of place. The integration of green space and architecture via communal areas within the building is focussed on shared experiences. Spaces to nurture and nourish with shared vegetable gardens, safe play areas for families, rooftop dining with city-wide views, meeting neighbours on Huntley Green. Block 5B de RAUM | Apartment blocks https://www.architonic.com/en/project/raum-block-5b/20231510 Wed, 24 Nov 2021 23:00:00 +0100 The Euronantes district, where block 5B completes the northern fringe near the station, contributes to the opening up of the Malakoff 1 district by connecting it to the Dalby district, the Olivettes district, and the historic centre, and the development of the western Île de Nantes by extension. Regarding the urban challenge, the hypothesis led by town planner Gérard Pénot (Atelier Ruelle) and Nantes Métropole Aménagement finds its support in the architectural project by no longer looking to link up with a metropolitan centrality but by building the missing pieces of the city by being a centre. This necessary dialogue with the city takes place at different levels: at large territory level, increased by the connection to the European rail network, at street level and neighbourhood level. The project is therefore integrated as a connection tool between the proposed uses and the wider landscape and is built around 3 major challenges: - The human scale as a benchmark: paths and u…

Student Residence in Hainholz de Max Dudler Architekten | Apartment blocks https://www.architonic.com/en/project/max-dudler-architekten-student-residence-in-hainholz/20231287 Tue, 23 Nov 2021 23:00:00 +0100 The building, known as “HAINBASE”, located at Schulenburger Landstraße 114, and containing 241 apartments, augments a currently emerging mixed-use residential district for all age groups and living situations. A staggered urban figure whose tallest point rises to a height of 13 stories, the structure will serve as the north-western prelude to the new district and an architectural trademark at an entry point to the city. Architecturally, the building defines an urbanistic edge that lies along with the transition between city and periphery. With this project, Max Dudler extends the city of Hannover in a productive way, incorporating the history of the locale to create a timeless piece of architecture that looks toward the future. With its sculptural articulation and distinctive appearance, the ensemble combines high-rise and low-rise features, its thirteen-story tower effectively demarcating the entrance to the city. The design not only responds to the practice’s daily needs; it also reflects its values and signature style, providing a serene, bespoke, timeless environment to support creativity and wellbeing. The studio had been on the hunt for a new home to suit both its ethos and growing numbers. The search led the team to the Mets neighbourhood and a late 1960s Athenian polykatoikia (the country’s prevalent apartment block typology, which often mixes commercial and residential uses). Offering a sizeable interior, large windows and mesmerising, long views towards nearby greenery and the city’s iconic ancient ruins, such as the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Acropolis, a unit on the first floor proved the perfect fit. Upon acquisition, the designers completely gutted the space, transforming its original, small rooms into a flowing sequence of generous, light-fi…

For this site, which is near the city center and in close proximity to the university of applied sciences (OTH), the university, and the university hospital, Behnisch Architekten has constructed a residential complex designed for 204 students and intended to harmonize with the natural surroundings. The skewed axial alignment of the elongated, five-story building, which is staggered in height along its eastern side, allows the structure to keep its distance from the existing oak and helps create a striking entrance area. The northwest side offers additional space for premium, open-air leisure areas. <b>Connecting the street, building, and green areas</b> The core idea behind the design was to connect Franz-Mayer-Strasse to the south with the building and stretch of green to the north. Having bought this apartment in an early 20th century building in Khamovniki, the first thing they did was to plant trees below their windows. “Vladimir went to a nursery and bought a rowan and a maple, a lilac bush and a fir tree and planted them below our balcony,” recalls Natalyia. “At the time, I wasn’t convinced it was such a good idea, but in the long run planting the trees proved to be a wise move. The refurbishment has lasted much longer than we anticipated and the trees have grown pretty big.” The apartment is 130 square meters. It did not take long to draw a general layout: an enfilade, well-proportioned rooms, virtually no corridors and maximum daylight – the solutions both architects favour. “My only concern was borrowed light windows. Letting natural daylight into the corridor and bathrooms was such an attractive option…

Cabin ANNA de Caspar Schols | Hotels https://www.architonic.com/en/project/caspar-schols-cabin-anna/20230923 Sun, 21 Nov 2021 23:00:00 +0100 While I lost myself in my new life in London, I was playing with the idea to create a new design based on the fundamentals of ‘Garden House’. I wanted to design a sellable, fully inhabitable house, a flat- pack that could be built and re-build anywhere in the world. I found people that supported me, not only in word but were also ready to financially invest in this new design, called ANNA. This led to more prototypes in which we experimented with more practical use and temporal or permanent inhabitation. In which the initial spirit of flexibility and connectivity to the environment would remain intact. ANNA is a dynamic home in the shape of an open platform to live with rather than against the elements, by playing with the configuration of the layers of the house. Just like the way you dress yourself to suit different weather conditions, occasions, and moods. ANNA Stay, ANNA Meet, and ANNA Me. Eventually, we developed this into ANNA Stay. ANNA Stay has two sliding shells instead of…

Much like its historical predecessors – the case of Sarajevo mosques during 19th century being a nearby example, where mosque complexes – built by rich donors – were the starting points, the ‘seeds’ for the development of the new parts of the city, the new complex becomes one such thing for this part of Ljubljana. The programme of the centre consists of a religious school building, a cultural and office programme, an apartment building for the employees of the community, a restaurant, as well as the mosque, the first one to be built in Slovenia, all of them supported by car parking in the basement. Thus, the ECB in Frankfurt manages the currency of one of the largest international economic areas. After relocating its headquarters from the Eurotowers to a new building in the Neue Mainzer Straße in 2014, the approximately 2,300 employees now operate from a partially newly built building ensemble. This is made up of three elements: A former wholesale market hall from the 1920s and two polygonal towers, which provide space for 110,000 m² of gross floor area. Lindner realised the interior fit-out for the new ECB headquarters: In addition to interior facades and metal wall claddings, around 90,000 m² of the Lindner raised and cavity floors were used in the office building. A corporative design for all the facades, including more than 38.000 sqm, created a unique design for the same company, which was compatible for all the projects due to prefabricated elements that accelerated the construction with accurate cost control. The main intention was to create a new, global image inside and outside the shopping centers. Hotel Oderberger de ECLISSE | Manufacturer references https://www.architonic.com/en/project/eclisse-hotel-oderberger/20228360 Wed, 10 Nov 2021 00:00:00 +0100 Hotel Oderberger is located in Berlin's quiet Prenzlauer Berg district in the Stadtbad Oderberger Straße, a building designed as a public bath in 1898 by architect Ludwig Hoffmann. A historic spa in Berlin, it has undergone major renovation and restoration to protect the building's original appearance while preserving as many of its elements as possible. Built in the Neo-Renaissance style, the public bath opened its doors in 1902. Residents of the area came here to take care of their personal hygiene, as there were no toilets nor bathrooms in the apartment blocks of the time. The building had numerous cabins equipped with showers or bathtubs and a large indoor swimming pool. As the years went by, the evolution of customs and the growth of wealth, the popular public bath lost its main function and was finally closed in 1986 due to major subsidence and cracks in the floor. After three decades of neglect, with more than 100 years of history and a total area of 8,600 sqm, the building wa…

Casa Frida de ECLISSE | Manufacturer references https://www.architonic.com/en/project/eclisse-casa-frida/20228359 Wed, 10 Nov 2021 00:00:00 +0100 Originating in France between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, Art Nouveau was characterised by its decorative harmony and elegance. The movement, which also spread to Italy under the name of Stile Liberty, played a key role in the history of 20th century architecture. Casa Frida is a residential project that has given a second life to an Art Nouveau building dating back to 1920, which originally housed the town's old bocce club. The building retained its sublime elegance with a richly decorated façade in a good state of preservation, but needed extensive redistribution of the rooms, considering its partial state of abandonment and its new residential use. The lack of interior elements worth preserving facilitated the decision to create a clear stylistic contrast by preserving the exterior façade intact and creating interior spaces more in keeping with a dynamic, modern lifestyle. A radical contrast between exterior and interior, honest testi…

The main building, on two levels, was completely emptied, enlarged and redesigned in terms of both the distribution of the rooms and the systems, both of which were largely obsolete. The project therefore entailed a global and integrated renovation project that involved both the structural aspects of the building and energy efficiency. The insulation of the main volume was carried out using natural insulators, in accordance with the principles of green building, following an approach aimed at minimizing environmental impact while maximising people's health and comfort. The outside of the existing portion of the main building was lined with rock wool panels, protected by a counter-wall, while the new concrete roof was covered with an ecological and resistant zinc-titanium coating, replacing the previous tile-coated woo…

The key element of the project is the stairs with green steel banister. Above it, we hang up elegant pendant lamps by Ukrainian brand Noom. We had to cut out a part of the floor above and reinforce the building construction before it. 10 mm thick steel sheets for banister were cut and bent in advance to be welded on site. We built up a lifting tackle in the building which held every metal sheet and let weld them unsupported. Rounded shapes of the banister add some dynamics and continuity to space. These elements are aligned with some of the walls and work surfaces radiuses, shapes of mirrors on walls and three bar islands. Color Bar is a place where hair dyes are mixed. Also, you can drink some champagne next to it. In the 365 Studio customers decide where to spend the time during hair dying by themselves, there is no need to stay in a hairdressing chair all the time. The real

In need of a workspace and meeting venue in central Stockholm, Swedish digital tech consultancy Samsen is opening – not an office – but a wine bar, and Note Design Studio have been charged with creating the perfect interior. <b>Designed for work and play</b> As a specialist tech consultancy working with the likes of Klarna, Spotify and Nespresso, Samsen normally despatches employees to work in its clients’ offices – something that Covid-19 made impossible. They had been planning a home of their own long before the pandemic struck, with a vision of an office shaped by long standing workplace trends that embrace flexibility and employee satisfaction. The rooms in the restaurant are designed to accommodate a wide range of uses: guests can enjoy a tipple at the bar or savour regional specialities in the seated area. The Ratskeller can also be booked for events and celebrations. <b>A place of discovery and myriad colours</b> The lighting design needed to satisfy two main requirements in this case: achieve, on a low budget, illumination with eye-catching effects and also to comply with the regulations governing buildings of historic interest. A custom light was designed for this project using a manufacturer’s standard luminaire. Once produced in a smaller format, it conformed to the permitted size: the energy-saving lights from the original plan were replaced with high-power LEDs. These lights are installed on the ri…

The building – known as ‘Snow Cape’ – has as its theme ‘Sharing Future Happiness’ and will highlight Finland’s commitment to sustainability and its deep connection with nature, as well as ensuring a memorable visitor experience. Teemu Kurkela, Founder and Creative Partner at JKMM Architects, explains: “In designing the pavilion, we sought to bring a fragment of Finnish nature to UAE and Dubai. The pavilion was inspired by the thin white layer of first snow that covers the Finnish landscape at the beginning of winter. In Finnish, it is called 'Lumi', which means snow. The main entrance was inspired by a traditional Arabic tent. Tw…

Rather than the act of designing shelves, displays, or sales desks, we wanted to produce a singular design element, a sculpture of sorts that has it’s own aesthetic quality and massing that simultaneously is inspired by existing conditions while also setting out to define new ones. Thus, a long central form was developed that draws one’s eye through space. Together, a lower ‘table’ element and a mirrored ‘ceiling’ element compresses the space and produce an intimacy above the product display. These elements are made of an “off-the-shelf” industrial grating material. This product has a unique self-supporting structural ability and an enticing visual quality that screens and filters light, producing moments of opacity/transparency depending on one’s vantage point. These qualities, along with the material’s relative affordability, allow for larger design gestures to be executed within a modest…

We wanted to reinterpret the natural phenomena that can be experienced in the forest as urban materials. We designed elements such as louver and grating by using achromatic materials, and the light and shadow falling through the leaves. And while walking in the forest, We wanted to design a scene where vertical trees intersect according to distance and viewpoint. And, in general, the road means that there are no clear boundaries between where people can step on and where can't step on in the forest, but people perceive the cleared empty place as a road. We have proposed a path through various methods of implicitly inducing movement even in a wide open space. The collaboration between Abloh and AMO represents an ongoing dialogue between the two that was sparked by the jointly developed exhibition Figures of Speech. The property holds a number of distinct aesthetic markers, including an opaque polycarbonate facade. Through this exterior layer, Off-White’s new visual marker—a pair of hands extended upward—is visible above a bright orange “X,” another of the brand’s signatures. The ‘X’ overlays the word ‘SHOP’ indicating that this is not simply a shop. Instead, Abloh and AMO developed a platform for Off-White’s diverse identity, driven by Abloh’s multidisciplinary engagement. The ‘X’ results from the ongoing endeavor of Abloh a…

It is as it appears to be: inside and outside concrete, without further insulation or cladding. The crystalline form takes its cues from the surrounding buildings: compact single houses from the 1930s with hipped roofs standing at the corner of large gardens. Here, the six-sided object is angled to leave space on the northwest for the garage and to allow for a spacious garden to the south. The plan is developed around a lozenge-shaped stairwell, which is the loadbearing core and integrates the central servicing shaft. The rooms are arranged around this central element, each opening out onto different outside spaces. On the ground floor, the kitchen abuts onto the living/dining areas and opens up towards a terrace on the eastern side. The 199m2 retrofitted barn sits within a 25-acre site of green fields and is part of a wider long-term strategy, which is being developed by the clients and the practice, to regenerate and rewild the secluded site, turning an agricultural relic into the hub of a new ecological smallholding. The scheme creates a new kitchen garden, traditional orchard and series of wildflower meadows, interspersed with wild margins, hedgebanks and areas of copse and scrub. The project embodies TYPE’s interest in ecology, low-energy construction and architecture’s interface with the natural world, and it exemplifies a rigorous approach to craft. It was on site for five years, managed at close hand by founding partner Tom Powell, who moved to site with his partner to lead the build. Hidden at the end of a beautiful avenue of century-old trees, the exit is within a group of several neoclassical buildings, each with great historical value. "The charm of the building and the architectural setting was what attracted the founders of Honeyz to this place, with the intention of making it a destination of reference," says Gema. At just 75 square meters, the Honeyz store references the sophisticated history of a city that, for hundreds of years, has been celebrated as an epicenter of arts and cultural events. “While visually rich in contrast, color, texture and shape, the interior draws from a limited palette of materials, which resonates with an almost sacred sense of scarcity,” explains Gema. The client requested a new facade design and a complete interior design strategy for all the malls and plazas. The challenge was to develop a functional, contemporary, and economically effective solution in a short period of time. The operation was divided into different zones with complex coordination in between technical departments and the non-stop activity of the tenants. As a result, the malls gained more visibility of shopfronts, an easier customer navigation, and a fluid and exciting circulation of people. All the spaces were designed to produce a new retail experience that connects with the customer’s emotions and needs. The facade design includes a corporative identity and consists of a prefabricated system of panels where commercial brands can utilize the space. The transparency and versatility of these elements permitted a free composition, compatib…

Xiaojing Bay – Skyline Villa de Original Vision | Hotels https://www.architonic.com/en/project/original-vision-xiaojing-bay-skyline-villa/20226539 Thu, 28 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 Luxury ocean view vacation homes are a new phenomenon in China and essentially currently limited to apartments. When China Resources Land, one of China’s most prestigious developers, decided to break ground in this market and provide hillside ocean view villas they carried out extensive research that brought them to look closely at our work. After showing them around our projects in Thailand and Hong Kong, they came to recognise our abundant experience in designing luxury contemporary villas and on taming steep and complicated hillside sites. This led them to ask us to bring our magic to Xiaojing Bay. Efficiency is the key to success with such difficult topography, where crafting roads to make them comfortable and safe whilst using as little land as possible is an art form. With the aid of extensive computer and physical modelling, we created a clean and topographically sympathetic road network that provides every villa with an unobstructed view to the bay. The artist A. Lentulov lived in this house for 30 years. It is impossible not to respect a house with such an artistic heritage, but it would also be uninteresting to indulge indirect quotations. And it is clear that the interior of the sound recording company that operates at this address should take into account not the historical reminiscences, but the comfort and the convenience of employees. Together with the graphic designer Polina Glynina, who borrowed the image of a Maneki Neko - a "lucky cat" from the Bosnian tattoo artist Igor Lazarevich, and collected from Japanese posters of the 50-60s (Yoku, Hisami Kunitake, Ikko Tanaka and Frenchman Bernard Villemo) and street art graffiti artists Broken Fingaz from Haifa Walls, we continued to work on the idea of decorative platitudes inscribed in the volume of old architecture. It traverses a steep hill, ergo the nickname “Berg”, the German word for mountain, and is one of the few roads that connect the lower-lying port area with Altona’s well-developed centre situated above. The bottom of the ascending street joins with Grosse Elbstrasse, a busy thoroughfare along the Elbe river that houses the Fish Market, warehouses, industrial buildings and many popular restaurants. A green zone is located at the northern end of the slope, the Elbhang. It forms the backdrop for the property. The present situation at the base of this zone consists of various buildings which are utilised commercially. This approach originated in the Netherlands and is based on all road users being equally considerate of other users, without the need for traffic signs or demarcations. This exception was converted into an opportunity to work the building's facades, simultaneously in conformity with the horizontal axes of the adjacent building, and creating a rhythm that organically accepted the skewed neighboring alignments. The result is the composition of the horizontal and vertical elements that delimit the balconies, creating an additional skin to the building, providing the necessary privacy, a more intimate mood and regulating the light for the interior of the apartments. The water`s journey de THDP | Installations https://www.architonic.com/en/project/thdp-the-water-s-journey/20224751 Sun, 17 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 The fil rouge of the initiative is the story of the journey of water through rock. This precious element is analysed in the process of passing into the subsoil layers, where it is enriched with minerals and returns to the surface rich in beneficial properties. A true miracle of nature which, here, becomes experience. Inspired by this magic, THDP develops a collection of floor ceramics and wallcoverings, a real journey; where the tones of the earth fade into those of water and, through concentric circles between sulphurous vapours and fragrances that evoke the sea, lead to the source, where the water comes out transformed. The concept was inspired by the Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination project, in which THDP redesigned the interior. The thermal baths have been present for over 3,000 years, thanks to the millenary natural spring that makes them unique. The Impress dental clinic concept is aimed at a young audience, which has grown with new technologies, since its offer is based on online treatments that reduce face-to-face visits. From the first moment, Impress looked for a fresh design, that represented the brand and its values, that moved away from the clichés of a dental clinic (white colors, aseptic environment). The design takes into account the values of Impress and solves the entire program through a single gesture that organizes all the spaces: a single curve runs along the inteior accompanying the turn of the corner, encompassing all the functional spaces towards the interior, and freeing the area in contact with the facade to function as a waiting room or reception, allowing a global view of the interior from the street. The curve itself is the abstraction of the Impress logo. In this…

Headway Coworking de DA bureau | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/da-bureau-headway-coworking/20224622 Thu, 14 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 Headway is a new premium coworking space in the heart of Moscow City, on the 35th floor of the Federation Tower. Our goal was to create a space of total concentration and one-pointedness in the business centre of the bustling metropolis, where anyone can fully focus on their work. The design concept was based on the idea of dividing the space into two contrasting areas: The working area block is austere, transparent, advanced, lightweight; The public space units are out of line, chaotic, compact, eye-catching. The forms and arrangement of these areas made it possible for us to depart from the concept of a long blank corridor and transform it into an integrated multifunctional space made up of lounge areas, reception units and open space areas flowing one into another. This partition is achieved not only through space zoning, but also through the use of proper materials. To create maximum aeriality, the working area is framed by glass partitions down to the leve…

With reference to urban construction, it is the first of its kind in Tehran to display innovative design by Hadi Teherani throughout the structure. When viewed from outside, the exterior of the building bearing the name N°4 (Kamran Residence) draws attention due to a skilfully varied and graphically three-dimensional façade scenario. Mobile screens made of a metal weave featuring modernly interpreted ornaments serve as individual shielding between privacy and the public sphere. As with the neighbouring houses, the building opens solely along its north and south façades. The lighting plan had to be completely revised by the time of reopening in spring 2017 and finished while the shopping centre was open for business. <b>Three Atriums Provide Structure</b> As part of the relaunch, a new interior design was chosen that divided the mall into three sections: “The Lobby” was depicted in energising blue, green and yellow, “The Boutique” in stimulating red, blue purple and turquoise…

CASA CARIMATE de DOME Milano Studio | https://www.architonic.com/en/project/dome-milano-studio-casa-carimate/20224529 Tue, 30 Nov 2021 23:31:07 +0100 Materials such as cement, glass and wood make up the volumes in an alternation of public and private environments from the living room to the bedrooms, without forgetting the infinity swimming pool covered with sandblasted serpentine marble which, placed inside, can be used both summer and winter with the direct connection to the outdoor solarium and receives direct sunlight through the huge windows. The rationalism of the shapes is softened by the colors coming from the outside and by the careful study of the details, where each room is different from the other and the bathrooms are designed in stone with shades of pink that go well with the taps and furniture. A clean architecture with characteristics, even in its minimalism, a perfect synthesis of modernity with retro touches, which has allowed this 600-meter villa, on two levels, to become a model of interior design in Como for all enthusiasts, totally different from the mansions of the area. The walls, in Casa Carimate, dissolve a…

Haus Koeris de Zeller & Moye | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/zeller-amp-moye-haus-koeris/20224508 Tue, 12 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 Haus Koeris is a private home that is situated among tall pine trees on a lot near a lake in close proximity to Berlin. As a structure entirely made of wood, the building is elevated from the ground to minimise the impact on the land and to avoid contact with the seasonally damp soil. The irregular shape of the house stems from the position of existing trees. Five boxes are arranged in a staggered layout with the individual rooms overlapping each other allowing for connections between them. The shifts in the floor plan create small patios and green niches along the building‘s perimeter. Some of these alcoves are sheltered from wind or hidden from views, others capture the sun and thus create pleasant microclimates. The recesses give the residents various opportunities to use the exterior as inhabitable open air spaces in dialogue with the internal rooms, proposing a new relationship with nature where indoors and outdoors blend into each other. The inside of the single-storey…

Domaine De Bayssan Auditorium And Open-air Amphitheater de K Architectures | Theatres https://www.architonic.com/en/project/k-architectures-domaine-de-bayssan-auditorium-and-open-air-amphitheater/20224448 Tue, 12 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 <b>Context</b> The deep-rooted origins of the Domaine de Bayssan still remain a mystery, but its toponymy plunges us into the Gallo-Roman period which contributed strongly to the city of Béziers identity, its economic expansion and emergence in the history. Today, it is a place of cultural freedom that holds its own on the cultural scene. The former «Sortie Ouest» theatre already had a noble vocation, much broader and more generous than the performing arts as simple entertainment. Sortie Ouest imposed a demanding and diversified programme, not only to satisfy the small circle of an informed public but also orientated towards «general education». It seeks to provide opportunity for sometimes unexpected artistic encounters, the inexhaustible source of rich and contrasting emotions. <b>Objectives</b> The theatre wanted to preserve its circus soul which corresponds to its cultural vocation, both in substance and in form. Consequently, the project largely draws its re…

Cottage Inspired by a Ship Cabin de Prodesi/Domesi | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/prodesi-domesi-cottage-inspired-by-a-ship-cabin/20224201 Mon, 11 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 The small cottage, concealed with sunburned larch planks, located in the greenery above the Vranov Dam, provides surprisingly big interior space. Not only owner’s family, but also visitors can enjoy it. It provides plenty of space for evening gatherings as well as for sleeping. There are inconspicuous storage spaces in every corner of the house and everything has its place just like in a cabin of a ship. The interior of the house is interconnected, but at the same time the attic provides plenty of privacy. The interior surrounded by spruce wood offers a cosy refuge, whereas large, glass panes overlook breath-taking water surface. At the beginning there was a legacy - the investor acquired a small cottage on the bank of the Vranov Dam from his grandfather. He approached Prodesi/Domesi with a specific assignment - he wanted a wood cottage built on the existing foundations which would have everything that today's modern timber buildings allow for, and which would become a comfortable h…

Liederhalle Kultur- und Kongresszentrum de pfarré lighting design | Administration buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/pfarre-lighting-design-liederhalle-kultur-und-kongresszentrum/20224199 Mon, 11 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 Due to the complex ceiling structure, the main challenge was the transformation of the foyer into an inviting space, providing serenity and elegance. On top, a high uniformity was part of the lighting brief, to serve the various events held in the space with a well balanced illumination. The proposal, to change the former white ceiling into a solid blue surface came from the lighting designers and is an important feature in the lighting concept. Small LED-luminaires with precise optics have been seemlessly integrated in the ceiling, and the reflection of the floor supports the generous spatial feeling. LED-Lines follow the main edges of the various voids in the ceiling, to enhance their impact in the space. Ilulissat Icefjord Centre de Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter | Trade fair & exhibition buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/dorte-mandrup-arkitekter-ilulissat-icefjord-centre/20224162 Sun, 10 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 In the harsh yet beautiful Arctic landscape surrounded by snow and ice, Dorte Mandrup has designed Ilulissat Icefjord Centre, highlighting the effects of climate change, on the edge of the UNESCO-protected Greenland wilderness. Overlooking the Kangia Icefjord on the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, the building blends effortlessly into the landscape and offers a unique vantage point from which to experience the astonishing Icefjord and understand the dramatic consequences of climate change on this remarkable landscape. Described by founder and creative director, Dorte Mandrup as “a snowy owl’s flight through the landscape", the aerodynamic, light structure of the building appears to levitate over the magnificent, rugged terrain - like an outstretched wing gently touching the bedrock. The shape frames the views towards the fjord while preventing snow build-up and creating a shelter from the snow and freezing winds. "The Icefjord Centre offers a refuge…

Dockland de Hadi Teherani | Office buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/hadi-teherani-dockland/20224161 Sun, 10 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 A figurehead for online captains Like a gateway to the city of Hamburg, the Dockland office building stands at one end of Edgar-Engelhard-Kai, a street quay between the Norderelbe, the northern arm of the Elbe River, and the Fischereihafen, the harbour for the fishing trade. The ‘bow’ of this ship-like structure juts out freely over 40 metres to form a dynamic supplement to the ‘stern’ constituted by the neighbouring ferry terminal. The building offers roughly 9000 square metres of office space borne by a steel-frame superstructure. The width of the complex makes it possible to position communication zones such as kitchenettes or conference rooms ‘midships’, though the same applies for archives or spaces for printers. The large open areas containing freely appointed furnishings create a spacious work atmosphere. The glassed-in façade enables employees to enjoy the wonderful view of the port panorama from their offices. Those whose work leaves them no time for pleasurable gazing dur…

Bellows House de Architects EAT | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/architects-eat-bellows-house/20224156 Sun, 10 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 A single row of mature poplar trees, along the side unsealed road, forms a soft foreground to what we considered as the “main” façade of the house. Shadows of the trees cast onto the white concrete masonry blocks in the morning, animate the long articulated façade. The articulations, through the masonry and concrete detailing, together with the frustum roofs and layering of spaces, evoke street engagements and curiosities. These pose a polemic to the long façade which is essentially a defense mechanism to provide and suggest domestic privacy. The formal entry sequence starts from entering the pedestrian gate on the main street: the dusty pink brick pavers provide the conduit between the native garden and the building structure. Through the gap between the long façade and the garage, an outdoor shower is provided for washing down the wet gears from the sea, before space opens up to the inner outdoor sanctum. Internal living spaces look into this north-facing courtyard garden where th…

NAN Residence de FOF Studio | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/fof-studio-nan-residence/20224152 Sun, 10 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 This is an interior refurbishment of a ground floor flat in Bermondsey, London— a grade II-listed, former paper mill, and tannery. The warehouse consists of several original features such as timber beams, brick walls, cast-iron columns, and cast-iron pivoting windows. A young couple had lived in the flat for a year and decided it was time to renovate their home. Their main criteria were simple— to make their home a brighter space, and to have a larger kitchen with a central island. To address the issue of light, we decided to remove one of the partitions that formerly divided the living room and bedroom. By opening up the rooms, daylight from the south-facing windows could penetrate into the living and dining space, creating a much brighter area. In lieu of the wall, we introduced a set of full height timber-glazed screens to allow flexibility of the space, and add visual interest, with the filtering of light through a mix of clear and vintage-pressed glass. The bi-fold screen serve…

BAM Office de Gonzalez Haase Architects | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/gonzalez-haase-architects-bam-office/20223920 Wed, 06 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 AAS’ BAM office is located in the middle of the city, in Kreuzberg, and takes place in the beautiful and bold new building designed by BCO Architects. BAM took over from the back building the ground floor with the garden and the first floor with a total of 246sqm space interiors. Each of the 2 floors is made of a consistent long rectangle room taking the whole plot of the building. In keeping with the elegant simplicity of the building, the design of the ground floor opening onto the building’s enclosed courtyard consists of a single long gallery used as show-room, meetings or gallery and can be divided almost by its half why a sliding translucent wall in 2 large rooms. The sliding wall isn’t perpendicular but lightly angled creating the only non-orthogonal element of the composition except the stairs connecting the office space above. As the stairs by its opening let the above light coming in vertically, the translucent wall do so with a horizontal lighting. From this all-whi…

Aera Bakery de Gonzalez Haase Architects | Café interiors https://www.architonic.com/en/project/gonzalez-haase-architects-aera-bakery/20223914 Wed, 06 Oct 2021 00:00:00 +0200 For the second Berlin branch of Aera – a gluten-free bread manufacturer and café located at Rosenthaler Platz – the architecture duo Gonzalez Haase AAS designed a space that takes full advantage of its prominent location by being impossible to overlook. The entire depth of the new store is made visible through a large storefront window, allowing its rich Lapis Lazuli blue interior to take centre stage. Freeing the 70m2 space from the layers of the past revealed a ceiling of 3.8m in height and allowed the length of the space to be viewed in its entirety from the front of the 13m long wall. No inlaid walls or edges were used. A diagonal counter, which runs from the entrance to the end of the shop, divides the space into two functional areas and guides the visitor along the length of the store from entering to placing and then receiving their order. Uniform in texture and colour, this long concrete counter visually merges with both floor and wall surfaces, becoming an organic part of t…

Art Gallery in Barcelona de MAIO | Shop interiors https://www.architonic.com/en/project/maio-art-gallery-in-barcelona/20223912 Wed, 06 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 The intervention aims to transform a pre-existing space into an exhibition gallery on c/Trafalgar in Barcelona, understanding the space as a place of memory, where all the elements (continent and exhibition content) act as reversible and mutable overlays in time. The project is conceived as an open transformation process over time, the first phase radically questions the format of the white cube, and invites to reflect on what a contemporary exhibition space should look like. The proposal, therefore, seeks to create a specific site – away from a generic white envelope – including traces and memory of the site, avoiding treating the existing in a precious way. Responding to this idea of exhibition space as a place of narrative in permanent transformation, it has been chosen that the materiality and literality of the technical and normative solutions, is presented in a direct and explicit way, thus making visible and meaningful the processes of the architectural project. The expres…

So when a new branch opened in Saarbrücken in 2019, an improved version of the modular lighting system was used. Holistic approach to lighting design in the newly constructed premises We were able to coordinate plans for the lighting concept for Möbel Martin in Saarbrücken with the architect from the outset. The dynamic controls for natural light were to be installed using a modular LED lighting system as in Kaiserslautern. <b>Artificial light and influx of natural light</b> The architecture of the four-storey building is characterised by its high atrium, generous glass surfaces in the entrance area and a clerestory. Calculating incidence of natural light over the year was fundamental in planning for artificial light. A threshold meter moun…

An absolute gem in the midst of it's own fabulous gardens. One of the main objectives for the renovations was to maintain the monumental character of the castle, aswell as reflect the owner's love and passion for craftsmanship, heritage and history. In the interior of the castle we find a subtle blend of soft greens, beige, brass and oak. a subtle nod to the palet we find in the garden's. Creating a warm and peaceful setting. The same idiology was translated into the kitchen and bathroom. While designing these interiors, the priority was to maintain the sense of warmth and peace by usage of warm colors. We therefor applied our iconic Old Brass finish to our products to complement the character of these interiors For this project we also designed custom made handweels and knobs carrying the castle's coat of arms and name. Maido Sushi Restaurant de Child Studio | Restaurant interiors https://www.architonic.com/en/project/child-studio-maido-sushi-restaurant/20222788 Tue, 05 Oct 2021 23:00:00 +0200 British design duo Child Studio has transformed a disused London post office into a contemporary Japanese restaurant. Located in Saint John’s Wood district near the famed Abbey Road crossing, the late modernist building provided a rich source of inspiration for the designers. The interiors present a subtle blend of European and Japanese design influences. ‘Our aim was to rediscover and celebrate the unique history of this building and the neighbourhood’ - commented Alexy Kos and Che Huang, the founders of Child Studio. ‘The post office was built in the 1960s and our design pays tribute to London's modernist heritage of that era. The Japanese references are subtle and present themselves through the choice of materials, the play of geometric patterns, and the hand-crafted woodwork detailing’. The dialogue between the East and West continues with the curated selection of antique and contemporary furniture: the iconic moulded plywood armchairs designed by Norman Cherner in 1958 are pair…

The Klimatorium offers an innovative and creative mini-hub for storm surge, water, and climate research. Its open public facilities and recreational outdoor spaces also offer innovative opportunities to experience, sense, and use the unique natural surroundings of Lemvig and the Limfjord. <b>A robust and inviting Klimatorium.</b> The main architectural concept of the Klimatorium is pragmatic, and its materials have been kept in wood, concrete, and steel. The symbol of the building is a wooden ‘wave’ that rises above the main entrance and makes the building an easily recognisable landmark. This motif is inspired by Lemvig’s characteristic fishing boats and is a tribute to the area's cultural history and local building customs. “A key design element has been to create an inviting building…

The two distinct dining concepts bridge the first and second levels of a Foster + Partners designed luxury residential condominium tower by developer Aby Rosen. The 62-seat Le Jardinier reflects Dirand’s exquisite modernist style and evokes an aura of tranquility. For the ground level, Dirand has created a beautiful, light-filled space -- a journey into a serene lush indoor garden, an escape in contrast to the glass building and urban surroundings of Midtown Manhattan. Interior elements are one-of-a-kind, custom-made with green-marble walls and floors with a composition of plants and vertical louvers adorn the floor to ceiling windows to match the vegetable-driven menu.
