The village church Alt-Tempelhof was originally built in the 13th century. At that time it formed together with the three - today still existing – ponds an important element of the weir system of the Tempelhof. Over time the single-nave aisleless church was modified several times. Today it is, together with the cemetery, the largest medieval village church of Berlin and is a listed building. The architectural task comprised the renovation of the church’s worship hall as well as the sensitive integration of a barrier-free sanitary facility and storage space for gardening equipment and waste bins into the cemetery. In order to integrate unintrusively the different functions in the garden they are split between three smaller wooden bodies. All three of them are connected with a wooden platform, which is made of the same material. In so doing the project succeeds in integrating the necessary pr… continue

100 Norfolk de Oda Architecture | Apartment blocks https://www.architonic.com/en/project/oda-architecture-100-norfolk/5106156 Tue, 17 Jul 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Beyond an acute awareness of elements such as context and the needs of its community, ODA New York’s brand DNA is earmarked, in particular, by a special dexterity with—or even mastery of—the city’s byzantine zoning code; a kind of sixth sense for navigating the various restrictions and regulations in a way that enables ODA to consistently challenge architectural convention. That zoning facility is on full display in the brand’s latest multifamily masterstroke. Indeed, located on NYC’s lower east side, 100 Norfolk quite literally turns convention on its head. Situated on a narrow lot between Delancey and Rivington Streets, Norfolk’s site would ordinarily dictate a fairly standard form: a planar rectangle which, per setback rules, would be constrained beyond a certain height, offering the best light and views to a limited few, likely at a premium. It’s a tired and inherently exclusive format, and one which ODA effectively eschews with one brazen question. Instead of locating the… continue

Its size and orientation are precisely defined by the topography of the site. The upper "terrace", a former grazing area, retains its original character and size. The volumetric impact of the proposal on this remarkable site is reduced. It boils down to the appearance on the surface of the terrain of two mineral and precise forms, abstract and isolated borrowings of contextual scale. Today's quarter developed in the 19th to the middle of the 20th century. Its heterogeneous quarter structure consisting of rather small-scale individual buildings in the north and block edge as well as row buildings in the south lends the quarter its charming character. However, it is the proximity to the Aare and the opportunity to bathe in it, which is what makes the area on the former alluvial plain so special. Berne Youth Hostel is located on Weihergasse, the former course of the city stream that once flows into the Aare, the last building at the foot of the Aare slope. AD ARCHITECTURE has been insisting on the concept of abandoning designs that are over complicated, and, in order to pursue this kind of perception, we designed our own office as a habitat for soul. The office of AD ARCHITECTURE is located in a creative park renovated from an old factory in Shantou. These old houses have witnessed the rise and fall of the city, and with the rapid development and expansion of the city, they are gradually being forgotten or waiting to be rebuilt. Knowing this, we seem to feel their weakness and loneliness, which remind us of the past vitality and unique temperament when we first saw the space. Does it mean the history it told us just ended here? When all the emotions came up, we started to think about it, and we decided to transform it into a space that can represent itself. continue

L.A. Poke de Ester Bruzkus Architekten | Café interiors https://www.architonic.com/en/project/ester-bruzkus-architekten-l-a-poke/5106137 Thu, 12 Jul 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Refreshing as a dip in the pool! Ester Bruzkus Architekten have designed the interior of the new Berlin restaurant L.A. Poke that recalls the lightness of California through color contrasts and custom furnishings. “We were inspired by the chill mood of the West Coast,” says architect Ester Bruzkus. So the design idea was to make a poke restaurant that was as relaxed as a day at a California pool. The interior design of the L.A. Poke makes use of contrasts of thick and thin, sharp and soft, curved and straight, rough and smooth. The space is screened by arches in different heights, widths and depths. While some arches were already in the room before the renovation, the architects playfully added more to transform the space. Framed vistas and views bring the eye deep into the space, defne open and intimate spaces, and tease the sense that there are mirrors, even though there are not. Another playful use of symmetry is the horizon line that bisects all front rooms exactly at eye level.… continue

As research emerges, it appears working conditions can lead to some significant mental health issues within the profession. Many of the issues surrounding working conditions are spelled out in my surprisingly popular essay Work/Life/Work Balance published on Parlour, Archdaily and the AMA website. I did not make public at the time that the essay was a result of my own struggles with mental health. Today, a family of three resides in the historic house – a modern home that holds references to its original state – with beautiful high panels, parquet flooring, low, paned windows, teak furniture and – of course – retro PH lamps hanging over the kitchen island.   “The house being a former home – or summerhouse – of Poul Henningsen wasn’t my initial motivation to buy the house, but coincidentally I’ve been collecting his lamps for quite some time, so you’ll find them around the house.” says the owner.    Unfortunately not much of the original building was left after the fire in 2014, but while rebuilding the house it was possible, by inc… continue

The building is organized around two elements, a triangular building that contains the public programs (lobbies, services, box office, cloakroom, auditorium) and the platform surrounding it that contains the operation zones (dressing rooms, storage, workshops, etc), including a multipurpose black box theater. The horizontal platform surrounding the triangular building serves as a viewing area for the archeological zone and towards the city. This grand plinth contains a series of patios, one of which, facing the secondary entrance to the auditorium, has been sunk into the ground to create a small open-air theater space. Water Park Aqualagon de Jacques Ferrier Architecture | Indoor swimming pools https://www.architonic.com/en/project/jacques-ferrier-architecture-water-park-aqualagon/5106104 Mon, 02 Jul 2018 00:00:00 +0200 <b>A landmark</b> The direction of the winds and the path of the sun have determined the floor plan for our project. Protected from cold north-easterly winter winds, nestling up to the forest, the aquatic park opens towards the west to make the most of cool breezes in warm weather. Looking out to the south-west, the aquatic park is bathed in light throughout the year. It is oriented so as to receive as much sunlight as possible in winter, while protecting itself from excessive exposure to the sun through its terraces in summer. Like an origami sculpture, our proposal for the aquatic park resembles an unfolding landscape, culminating at around 35m: it is a built landscape, rising into the sky. The structure is clearly visible from the surrounding area - it becomes a point of reference and a symbol of Villages Nature. This new type of landmark contrasts with the relatively flat topography. It is not an element which has been imposed on the landscape, but an extension of the landscap… continue

The strategy conceived for the project envisaged greater density along the railway that required only a section of the lot made available. The choice of a compact volume liberates the ground level and provides the neighbouring school and surrounding area with an unexpected green space, proof that density is not the enemy of open space. The volumes were developed through a process of adjustment to the urban context rather than a formalist or aesthetic approach, and the treatment of each façade derives directly from its orientation. Those most exposed to sunlight benefit from a crystalline double skin of vertically pleated printed glass slats which protect the bay windows. To the north, faceted metallic cladding reproduces the radiance and reflections of the glass and wraps the character of changeability and immateriality around the buil… continue

The site is leveled, with an area of 661 m2. To ensure the optimal use of the property, the house is located in the northern part of the parcel. House for parents Is exactly that kind of commision which could possibly harm your relationship with your family or with your work. Or even both. Fortunately in this case, things went against the odds. We received only three bacis requirements: a small house, no stairs and lots of space for nine grandchildren. Our answer to the this is the composition of a green atrium complemented by the house. The house shaped in a form of the letter L defines the atrium on its two sides. The south part of the plot is opened to the sun, while the northern part is taken by the house. The horizontal concrete roof slab is omnipresent and connects seamlessly all spaces in the house. continue

Vast areas of north facing glass enable the child and their family to catch a glimpse of the sculpted forms, artwork and play areas, reducing the anxiety of the child to their environment. The design team’s starting point was to anchor the Hospital in its unique surroundings. The nearby flora and fauna of King’s Park inspired a concept for the building based on petals and a stem. Fernando Faugno (Cox) said: "The composition of the building is directly inspired by nature. The elegant floral forms of Kings Park have been key in the general, shaping of the building and the curvaceous sculptural forms carry through the general theme of the architecture. This requires a strong and lucid building structure that has urban weight and clearly defines an address. But it also needs a stabilising and, above all, sheltering property that prompts a feeling of “being at home”. The place is based on the idea of a village or urban microcosm. Two open spaces define this intrinsic value of the village: The one, more public open space near the access road is comparable to a small market square, or the square in front of a town hall. To the right is the school cafeteria, which opens out to the court in summery weather, enlivening the space. In the middle is the main entrance and to the left, just as you would expect to see in such a place, a lime tree. The second open space is more shielded from the public. It is us… continue

Time Realty Headquarters de Enter Projects | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/enter-projects-time-realty-headquarters/5106098 Wed, 27 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Whilst many workplaces host mundane, boxed offices and an enclosed atmosphere, Time Realty desired an open, inclusive office space that inspired their employees. Enter Projects knew they could make this dream a reality. An open air plan with fluid dynamics and meandering geometrics defines the space, furniture, material and lighting of Time Realty's newly designed office. The result contrasts greatly with the existing patina walls, with both elements working together to create a vibrant visual experience. Lastly, the installation of gallery areas in the office brings both context and dynamic architecture to the space. Enter Projects began transforming the office space removing existing layers of plaster and gyprock. Tunnel House de MODO Architecture | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/modo-architecture-tunnel-house/5106096 Tue, 26 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0200 The client approach us with a brief to renovate their double fronted cottage in hawthorn, after a few briefing session with the clients, it became very clear that their lifestyle revolved around their garden and spending their days outdoor as much as possible. Unfortunately, their existing house doesn’t utilise the exterior as well as it could, and being completely south facing, the central body of the house remains quite dark most of the year. So our first approach, was to remove the awkward rear lean-to and instead of extending from the existing house, we decided to build a stand alone structure o the front house and connect the two spaces with a central passageway. Conceptually, this allows the two built form to contrast their individual form and characteristic, creating an architecture that provides clear distinction between ‘old’ and ‘new’. The brief was to create open plan spaces with an improved relationship to the garden, and a kitchen that could be enjoyed as a social space. The original kitchen was dark, and had a very low ceiling height of just over two metres. Works included the demolition of the poor quality conservatory and original rear rooms at both ground and first floors. This allowed a double height space to be created in the new kitchen. A bespoke polished stainless steel chandelier adds drama and the reflections emphasise the verticality of the double height space. Polished stainless finishes are continued internally with a recessed stainless display case and externally with cladding details. Tall, 3.1m fine framed glass doors allow uninterrupted views to the exterior, and a sculpted ceiling profile with curved plasterwork leads the eye toward the garden. This approach also alleviates the perception of density, resulting in quality apartments, with multiple orientations and limited direct views of the neighbours opposite. A feeling of being closed off has been eliminated in favor of the enhancements of framing and views into the distance, now enjoyed by the inhabitants, passersby, and even neighboring city blocks. Greenery also has an important role to play, slipping into the building’s interstices and colonizing the interior courtyards of the city block. Plaza opens a public gateway to the entire Susan and Fayez S. Sarofim Campus and creates a dramatic new public greenspace for Houston. The 14-acre redevelopment is currently the largest cultural project under construction in North America. “As we reveal not only a glorious new building for the Glassell School, but also a public plaza, large fountain, amphitheater, and roof garden, I think Houstonians will quickly grasp that our project intends to create a new destination for the city,” said Gary Tinterow, director of the MFAH. “With this phase of the campus redevelopment now accomplished, and with Nancy and Rich Kinder’s extraordinary pledge, we are well positioned for the campus completion, in early 2020. The entire project is a testament to Houston’s historic legacy of city building through arts-and-culture phil… continue

A3 Office Design de Rosie Lee | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/rosie-lee-a3-office-design/5106085 Thu, 21 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0200 We’ve long worked with A3 Retail Group, one of Russia’s largest sports and lifestyle retailers, on projects across the country - including the branding of Stride, their running store, DRoP!, their streetwear boutique, and The Corner, their boxing gym chain. Towards the end of 2017 they asked us to develop a design for their new Moscow offices that would tell the story of their work and inspire their staff during the time they spend there. We wanted to use the space to pay tribute to the way sports come to life in urban environments, celebrate the sporting culture of the brands they market, as well as energising the A3 team by drawing on the company’s history and values. While doing so, we also wanted to ensure it was an office that was a pleasant and relaxed environment to work in – both efficient and inspiring in equal measure. Our layout allows people to work and socialise naturally by offering a variety of different spaces. These include the dynamic ‘living area’, flexible sea… continue

The existing store front, a classically derived 2 storied arcade would be stripped down to framing and retro-fit for expansive openings at the ground floor with a suspended ‘timber’ curtain enclosing the upper. A prefabricated carrying system of bolt-able steel struts and CNC milled aluminum girders was designed to suspend the new surface out from the existing building line. Tension-able steel tie-rods, connecting these systems would handle all associated vertical and lateral loading produced by the new design. Responding to the cities call for walk street vibrancy on all new design proposals, we believed the new facade should play primarily the role of communicator at the street interface while offering a more private venue above. Financial Services Company de align | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/align-financial-services-company/5106083 Wed, 20 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0200 align has designed a striking, elegant and highly-contemporary workspace scheme for a financial services company client, with a unique 18th century visual twist. The client is based in a central London building with a Grade I-listed façade and a new-build structure directly behind and the new project specifically relates to the redesign of one entire floor. The scheme had to be delivered in three phases, with staff moving round the space to allow working to continue throughout. ‘The client’s business had grown substantially when the need arose for this redesigned work floor’, align Director and Co-founder Nigel Tresise explained, ‘with the existing layout proving not only overcrowded, but spatially disjointed.’ A flowing and open floorplan was a key tenet of the brief. The remit was to incorporate three closed meeting spaces; a small number of private offices; a series of open collaboration spaces and a kitchenette/tea-point area, incorporating additional seating and meeting spac… continue

Aldo Cibic investigates the basic elements of architecture in an installation designed to present Diplos, the new collection by Abet Laminati and Saib, during Milan Design Week 2018. A large labyrinth of polychrome shapes: “Colors on the move” is the installation designed by Aldo Cibic to present Diplos, the new materials collection by Abet Laminati and Saib, during the Salone del Mobile 2018. The project, hosted at the University of Milan inside the ancient Chiostro del ‘700 (‘700 Courtyard), has been exposed on occasion of the event - exhibition “Interni House in Motion 2018 - 20 Years”. Garden Studio de MODO Architecture | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/modo-architecture-garden-studio/5106077 Tue, 19 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Following closely to our clients' lifestyle and philosophy to food and productive gardening, Garden Studio is a free standing "extension" that provides to their family needs without compromising their love of gardening. It does so by providing a vertical garden on one of it's external walls. The ground floor contains the garage and workshop area, instead of closing this space up and creating the typical large and dark garage space, we opted to line the walls in exposed light grey painted studsm with a diffused polycarbonate sheeting. Creating a naturally illumminated space internally, ideal for a workshop, however even on it's own, the sheeting lets in a soften view on the surrounding garden creating quite a peaceful and contemplating space in itself. The first floor home office looks over the existing house and garden, the room is orientated north and a large sliding door allows the garden to be invited in when fully opened. The project is a series of complementary contrasts: the delicate light detail of the retained heritage façade against the contemporary colorbond and light face brickwork to the new extension; the original ornate features and high ceilings of the retained bedrooms against the intimate textured-orientated first floor master bedroom suite; and the lightness and texture of the living zone against the dark timbers and feature bulkheads in the kitchen. The hub of this home is very much the living/kitchen space – set down from the existing house level to maximise volume whilst staying within the heritage overlay height limitation, with access passing by the feature cantilevered stair, the space is surrounded by natural light and connection to the outside through a series of courtyards and skylights. The National Graphic Arts Centre is located in the former "Banque de France," a nineteenth-century building that was redesigned by architects Moatti et Rivière and combined with an extension. With 3,500 m2, including 1,000 m2 of exhibition space on two levels, a training workshop, a screen printing workshop, a documentation centre ..., the architecture had to meet a variety of requirements; namely to make the national graphic arts centre a meeting place and point of cultural exchange open to the whole population. Superbaba de Studio Roslyn | Restaurant interiors https://www.architonic.com/en/project/studio-roslyn-superbaba/5106072 Mon, 18 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0200 The crew behind Superbaba came to us inspired to make the best damn pita bread in the area. They looked to us to create a space that supplemented their desire to offer high quality, quick-service Middle Eastern cuisine. We as a studio enjoyed getting to the bottom of what inspired the four owners to come together to bring this concept to the PNW. What intrigued us most was everyone’s individual inspiration for this concept. Everything from ‘The Dallah Menu’s’ family history in Lebanon, the interest in the more ‘grungy’ signage found on every fast-casual storefront in the Middle East, and the aesthetic of over-saturated food photography typically seen there. Our goal was to marry these sources of inspirations into an artful space that would be at once intriguing and inviting. The interiors of Superbaba reference the strong arch motifs in traditional Middle Eastern architecture as well as quirky details found in diners and eateries. This nod to the traditional is offset with bol… continue

High Line de Diller Scofidio + Renfro | Parks https://www.architonic.com/en/project/diller-scofidio-renfro-high-line/5106071 Fri, 15 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0200 The High Line, in collaboration with James Corner Field Operations and Piet Oudolf, is a 1.5–mile long public park built on an abandoned elevated railroad stretching from the Meatpacking District to the Hudson Rail Yards in Manhattan. Inspired by the melancholic, unruly beauty of this postindustrial ruin, where nature has reclaimed a once vital piece of urban infrastructure, the new park interprets its inheritance. It translates the biodiversity that took root after it fell into ruin in a string of site–specific urban microclimates along the stretch of railway that include sunny, shady, wet, dry, windy, and sheltered spaces. Through a strategy of agri–tecture—part agriculture, part architecture—the High Line surface is digitized into discrete units of paving and planting which are assembled along the 1.5 miles into a variety of gradients from 100% paving to 100% soft, richly vegetated biotopes. The paving system consists of individual pre–cast concrete planks with open joints to enc… continue

Until now, Glam has been an entirely online venture. In early 2018, Cristin contacted Sergio Mannino to create her first shop in Soho, NYC. A few months down the track, and Glam Seamless is up and running. As an online business, Glam is pink, white and - you guessed it - glam. We needed to translate this brand into a physical space; at Sergio Mannino Studio, this is our job, and we love it. Designing the ‘physical version’ of an online brand is always an interesting challenge – and we know how important it is to succeed at the first attempt. The salon is a smooth cream and millennial pink, with shimmering ombre string curtains defining and separating the two areas of the store. Gallery Pavilion de JQTS | Installations https://www.architonic.com/en/project/jqts-gallery-pavilion/5106069 Thu, 14 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0200 GALLERY is placed in front of the building that hosted the previous editions of Walk & Talk which was recently sold, forcing the festival to move elsewhere. The title of the project is a reference to Walk & Talk’s own history. The pavilion’s basic element is a single frame with 3 openings (as the Ponta Delgada's monument "doors of the city"). It has no stability enough to stand by itself so the use of the triangular geometry created by the assembly of 3 frames generates the basic unity from where the project grows in and endless system. That repetition allows the creating of a space, a building or even a new reality. GALLERY is a about physical experience and haptic sensations. It's made of local Cryptomeria wood with a rough finishing that ask us to feel its texture. It has local bagacina on the floor that creates sounds and rhythms while walking inside. The 5,875 SF property, and former home of Cavalli Miami, required a complete interior redesign – one that would envisage an amalgam of the enduring spirit of classic Italian beach culture and a contemporary design aesthetic. The Generous openings facing the view to the south and east, require the provision of shading and filtering against the intense sun, which is provided by the wooden shutters. The shutters slide in adjustment to the position of the sun and privacy requirements. The shutter lattices, as typical of Mediterranean mashrabiya, block views inwards and maintain privacy, while allowing one to enjoy the scenery from the inside. The windows and doors behind the shutters are recessed to improve climate control, creating intermediate spaces of shaded outdoor areas. Even during the very hot days of summer, these measures keep the house cool and pleasant. The building’s exterior is illuminated by a field of stars that appear to float in mid-air. Hyundai Motor has commissioned the pavilion as part of a global mobility initiative. The structure’s 10-metre-high parabolic facades are coated with a super black material: Vantablack VBx2, a derivative of the original Vantablack, making it the world’s largest continuous nanostructure. The matt black material is able to absorb 99% of the light that hits its surface, diminishing its three dimensionality and creating the illusion of a startling black void in broad daylight. The facades of the pavilion are punctuated by thousands of tiny white lights which, during the day, simulate the view into space from that point on earth. The original design dates back to 1965. Its was abandoned with just the structure and envelopment finished. Bauman, a construction company, bought the building and in 2012 proposed to Studio Arthur Casas a renovation of its façade and the interior completion, now adapted for a commercial use. The building has the ground floor, 16 typical floors and a rooftop terrace. The original layout remained almost the same, with only a few changes. The most drastic intervention was the addition of a new underground pavement (3, in total). Moreover, the toilets were brought near to the vertical circulation areas. Although those modifications are products of a change in the use of the space, it allows greater flexibility in the floor occupancy by other groups and offices. The owners asked for a space that felt connected to its island setting—the mild climate, scenic views, and proximity to wildlife. At the same time, they needed a structure that could be easily secured when not in use. The cabin was designed as a glass house surrounded by three wooden slat decks that can be raised—through a system of hydraulic winches, wire rope, pivoting sheaves, and lead blocks—to serve as shutters. Open, the shutter decks are outdoor living space, connecting to the cabin’s interior through tall windows and sliding doors; closed, they secure the cabin. The fireplace rotates 180 degrees to be enjoyed indoors or out. An inverted roof with deep overhangs forces water to drain to the rear of the cabin. “It is intended to be a shelter of extremes, open or closed,” says Tom Kundig. “In order to feel cold, you have to feel hot; in order to feel safe, you have to feel at risk.
