The mandate mainly targeted the renovation of two rooms: the kitchen and the shared bathroom. The project also required a reorganization of the space at the back of the kitchen in order to accommodate functional space, serving both as a coffee bar and as additional counter space close to the outdoor terrace. Finally, a custom-made wooden desk, conducive to remote work, is designed to match the various mid-century modern furniture pieces selected by the clients.

The existing dining table commands a simple kitchen layout that follows the room’s rectangular shape. The addition of an arched opening between the living room and the kitchen accentuates views between the living areas, while also improving flow.

Above all, it was essential to preserve the building’s memories and history, since the client inherited the house from her mother. A simple approach was chosen that allowed us to maximize the existing floorspace, so that the owners, in their 30s, and their two dogs can enjoy the space for many years to come.

The project started with a consultation aimed at resolving some design issues, such as maximizing storage or updating the kitchen and indoor furnishings. The clients also wanted more space and dreamed of opening the house to the outside. An initial scenario, involving digging out the basement and creating an areaway, was deemed too complex and costly for structural reasons. To simplify the work, the decision was made to include the second-floor unit in the project. As a result, total floorspace is maximized and the requirements of the original brief are met, while the building’s constraints are fully respected.

The site had been neglected for years. The previous owner had installed concrete foundations for a previously approved design but as their circumstances changed the full construction of the house never materialised. Rather than removing the previous foundations we decided to work with them and modify to suit our new design. This approach resulted in minimising groundworks, waste from the site and reusing what was already there. Inspired by the rich maritime history of Wivenhoe, the design employs a double-gable roof, timber cladding in a dark colour and metal cladding on the roof. Typology and materials forming a close link to local boat-building sheds.

The existing house was striking, proud, rich in detail, and layered with decades of memories, but at the same time narrow, imposing, cold, and proscriptive – a house the clients loved, but one that was not always comfortable. Located in Castelldefels, a small coastal town near Barcelona, the elongated and stepped plot has a predominantly north-south orientation, with expansive views of the Mediterranean to the south. This directional aspect has been reinforced both in the exterior and interior concept, so that the house now emerges as a white volume from a terraced base of marble, with small platforms and gardens descending to the pool area, resolved in the same material, and the landscaped areas leading to the sauna pavilion, projected onto a former existing warehouse that was in ruins. Apartment AR is a small duplex in a 1960s building in Lisbon’s Campo de Ourique neighbourhood.

The clients divide their time between the countryside – in a large, spacious house – and the city, where they wanted to have a flat that contained the bare minimum but could provide ample comfort for the couple and their cat Alice when they came to stay in town.

On the lower floor there is now a single space, with a central structure that mediates and supports the kitchen and living room areas. The existing large staircase has been replaced by a light, delicate, metal structure, which takes advantage of the double height ceiling. The interior door openings were resized, and the carpentry system has been completely redesigned, contemplating new items.

In the Lisbon neighborhood of Avenidas Novas, apartment AP is in a build- ing that dates from the early 00s, with a showy design and flats of generic spatial character. The low ceiling height and the slender black window frames set the tone of the intervention, which resulted in an operation to contain the space in a uni- form, warm, and soft casing.

The spatial structure underwent a decisive alteration with the extension of the living room area - now occupying the entire western façade - and the widening of the communication with the kitchen, through a translucent sliding door. House for 2 Architects is the renovation of an apartment from the 19th century in front of the Luxembourg Garden in the Latin quarter of Paris. Because the apartment is on the 5th floor, the views are very impressive and we wanted to highlight that quality. In a dense city like Paris, light is one of the main elements to enhance.

The original layout was very partitioned, with lots of small mono-oriented rooms. The idea was to open up the plan to have double exposure, east to west, and be able to see the sun's path from morning to night. To achieve that, we had to break a 50cm wide bearing wall. The metal beam used to reinforce the structure was highlighted in pale green as a reminder of what was there before.

Kirribilli Downsizing Apartment is a renovation project aimed at transforming an existing apartment unit for Saro and Steven, a couple who are downsizing from their previous house now that their children have grown up and moved out. The apartment is strategically located in Kirribilli, making it an ideal choice for the couple, as both of them work in the city and can now conveniently walk across the Harbour Bridge to get to their workplaces.

The apartment itself, built in the 1950s, shows signs of age with its outdated kitchen, original floors, and a layout divided into smaller rooms, typical of older constructions. The overall atmosphere is dim, thanks to its long and narrow floor plan (some sections are as narrow as 3 meters), with a direct view into the neighboring property to the west. The blinds are often drawn, and the only source of natural light is a north-facing window at the far end of the apartment.

As a special education school, the campus landscape lacks 'specialness’. During the landscape renovation on the campus, we thoroughly considered the needs of students, differentiating the functions of the two main courtyards. We define one courtyard as a natural sensory garden named 'the Loving Garden'. In May 2018, BLOX, a mixed-use building in Copenhagen designed by OMA, was festively inaugurated by the Danish Queen. BLOX is home to the Danish Architecture Center (DAC) and includes exhibition spaces, offices, a café, a bookshop, a fitness center, twenty-two apartments, and an underground car park.

Part of the complex is a publicly accessible, playable staircase, that carve and designed in collaboration with OMA. Apart from the playable tribune, Carve also designed a bespoke play structure and a sports field, which were specifically designed for this location. In the Museum square neighborhood in the city centre of Amsterdam Bureau Fraai completed a conversion and upgrade of a monumental building into high-end apartments and office spaces. The architects took their inspiration from the Claire-obscur technique applied by the painter Gerard van Honthorst (after whom the street ‘Honthorststraat’ is named) who was a gifted follower of the famous ‘claire-obscur’ painter Caravaggio. This characteristic building and once beautiful monumental interior with a total of 4 stories and a souterrain had lost its charm throughout the time and lack of ownership and maintenance.

But both the new owner and municipality wanted this building to be restored and upgraded with full respect and care for all the monumental characteristics, details and quality. Therefore all the existing characteristics and details were well documented and photographed to ensure they would be restored accordingly.

The architect designed a large, atypical furniture block permeating the entire apartment and containing everything needed - at the entrance, two utility rooms, and a wardrobe; the mass continues further through the space, hiding storage spaces, concealing the kitchen behind bifold doors, and accommodating two smaller bathrooms. For the casco penthouse of nearly 300 square meters with a ceiling height of up to 4,75m, Bureau Fraai was asked to make a design that respected and fully embraced the beautiful panoramic views of the sea on one side and the city on the other side. To maintain and even maximize these views Bureau Fraai decided to not introduce any obstructing walls.

What was a tired and dark timber Californian Bungalow now sparkles from the leafy street. A typical free-standing timber period home on roughly 420sqm faced south and as a result was dark and introspective. Our design response was to turn the house back on itself, and build across the rear boundary thus creating two inner garden spaces. A low level, timber lined and glazed ‘hall’ creates a link between the period house and the new lofty, north facing addition.

The heritage building was gutted and re-furbished to house two bedrooms, family bathroom, and main bedroom suite. While period details were retained to be true to the heritage character, a sense of contemporary style was also added across the original home with all spaces being refurbished. Stepping into the new addition which houses a multi-purpose room, kitchen, living, dining and utility spaces, you can’t help but focus on the internal garden and entertaining deck.

The name of the building ‘Drakoni’ was given in honor of the family that built it and has been in its possession for more than six generations and is directly connected with the structure of the house that is entirely built from the local hard stone ‘Akoni’. The project consists of the restoration of a stone-built building of 1864 located in the proposed traditional settlement of Pines in Elounda, Crete. The village was first inhabited in 1400-1550 AD by the Venetians. The pointed arch located inside the building dates back to that time. This arc was found in 1864 by Mavrogiorgis Drakonakis (six generations behind the current owner) a stock and land farmer and built his house on the basis of it. It firstly contained one room and a courtyard, and later was shaped over the years into a house until 1920. Since 1920, the house has not been re-inhabited and remained for years as a stable for animals.

The current perception of the attics in the city center stands out for their potentially attractive character: they are elevated places, floating above the rooftops, partially visible structures from the street, not easily accessible, and sometimes associated with a bohemian life. In the city center of Pantin near Paris, a 1935 building has been ingeniously converted into a specialty coffee shop and roastery by the Italian-Mexican architectural design firm Office Abrami Rojas. Since successful completion of the “Quarter within a Quarter” interior architecture project in late 2023, the customer service hall of the LUKB headquarters has been basking in its new glory. The hall, originally built in 1973, was last remodelled in 2007. The main aim of the latest redesign was to break up the cold character of the space. Inspired by the Neustadt-Hirschmatt quarter, we developed the “Quarter within a Quarter” concept that integrates elements of the diverse neighbourhood into the design. Among the new features is a large “cloud” on the ceiling that counteracts the hall-like feel of the space and reflects the actual weather conditions in Lucerne. The hall accommodates consultations in various places: at mobile high tables, semi-private pergolas and consultation rooms.
