Rail Sun Lounger

Our indoor/outdoor Rail collection has its roots in the Arts and Crafts Movement but updates and elevates it with a sculpted and more severe utilitarian style. We developed the system for a specific environment- a client’s guest house/pool pavilion we designed near our base in New Canaan, formed out of a single long rectangle, with a substantial cantilevered element at one end, and a central covered outdoor room. When opened up, it creates one singular living space, running the entire width of the pavilion. We created Rail to seamlessly integrate these indoor and outdoor living rooms with a singular visual element.

Constructed using precise joinery principals, the new design has a light but muscular frame defined by a single bar as part of the back and arms of the design, enclosing the seating cushion with a visually strong horizontal line. Outdoor cushions are hand-upholstered with high resilience polyurethane foam and fiber housed in a removable water-repellent polyester fabric cover with waterproof zippers and thread. Indoor cushions are upholstered with high resilience polyurethane foam with a feather and down removable "jacket cover.

The collection consists of one, two, and three-seater lengths and three sizes of coffee tables. Elements can be combined to create myriad landscape configurations including U-shapes and L-shapes or to create a room within a room. Rail is available in a variety of our favorite woods for both indoor and outdoor use.
