Bulbo™ is an Italian design brand, founded in 2012 by lighting designer Lorenzo Antonioni who teamed up with other young creatives with the aim of promoting the relationship between urban people and nature through direct and daily experience. We believe in the food revolution and think that good design can make the difference. We envision smart and creative solutions for indoor farming in urban environments all year round. Bulbo™ designs and produces innovative LED lighting systems for growing vegetables, herbs and flowers at home. These lights combine advanced technology and made in Italy design increasing the city dweller's quality of life.

The project started in 2009 as a technological research in the Industrial Design Department at the Politecnico di Milano. From 2010 scientific research has been developed in collaboration with DISTA, the Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Bologna – Alma Mater Studiorum. Bulbo™ lights are a new generation of household appliances, able to replace sunlight and to activate a domestic food production cycle, while limiting energy consumption due to the implementation of LED technology. They reproduce the ideal light spectrum (PAR) enabling the photosynthesis process and allowing plants to grow in conditions of light scarcity or complete darkness.

After several years of scientific research and experimentation, in 2012, Bulbo™ won the Spinner European competition which provides funds to young entrepreneurs in order to promote research and create business opportunities in the field of technology. Through the support of Studio Pasquini, an industrial design firm based in Bologna, Bulbo™ has today become a brand that applies the same principles both to agriculture and industry by looking for smart solutions for industrial production in times of crisis. The entire production process is made in Italy, working along with specialised artisans and only using high quality materials.

Bulbo™ products have been available since October 2013. So far they have been sold in several countries: Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy, France, Finland, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and USA. Our best-seller is the Cynara model with a red cable. December was a ground-breaking moment for our Quadra models.

Bulbo™ has been featured in 21 magazines (both online and in print). Among them Domus, Wohnrevue, Interni, Elle Decoration UK, The Irish Times.

Bulbo™ and several consumers have experimented with more than 30 plant varieties. Among them: basil, strawberries, lettuces, chili peppers, tomatoes, sage, parsley, kale, chards, radishes, beans.
