Light is an essential component for well-being in the workplace. With VITAWORK, the German manufacturer LUCTRA has developed a flexible floor lamp that can illuminate entire offices with both direct and indirect light.

Good design can have a positive effect, especially in offices. In addition to furniture and acoustics, lighting plays a vital role in increasing the well-being and satisfaction of employees. Poorly or inadequately lit rooms can lead to fatigue, headaches, listlessness and loss of performance. Fortunately, however, more and more companies are recognising the connection between a good working environment and good, meaningful work. To this end, they rely on professional, contemporary lighting solutions that provide pleasant, healthy and standard-compliant lighting.

From spring 2020, the VITAWORK floor lamp will also be available in a Human Centric Lighting (HCL) version, which incorporates VITACORE electronics developed by LUCTRA

The changing world of work

Working environments are changing so rapidly and sustainably that the office has taken on some completely new functions: it is becoming a place for networking, for socializing, for showing solidarity with the company. This also has an impact on the space itself, which is being used more and more flexibly – as a so-called ‘multispace’. This means that the office has become a place which offers different options, where you can do your work in different ways: alone and focussed in the retreat room for example, or have a relaxed conversation with a colleague in the Work Café. This flexibility has a direct effect on the design of a room – on the furniture used, on the acoustic elements, and on the luminaires.

Of all these design elements, light is the least perceptible, says Jonathan Brune, Brand Director at LUCTRA. In addition, the requirements for brightness and light colour can vary depending on age and individual perception. This is why LUCTRA has developed VITAWORK, a free-standing luminaire that flexibly adapts to the user’s needs, for example when the room layout changes.

The absence of superfluous design elements is evidenced particularly by the luminaire’s flat head. While it is framed by a profile in aluminium colours, the panels are ribbed in black

An illuminating all-rounder

The idea behind VITAWORK is to be able to illuminate an entire room with a single floor lamp. The focus is on the user's needs, because the luminaire can be carried from A to B in an instant and operated simply and intuitively. In addition to operating the touch panel on the body of the luminaire, it can also be controlled via a light-intensity or presence sensor. The luminaire can thus be switched on and off, as well as variably dimmed both downwards and upwards. At the same time, the light intensity can be varied or automatic presettings activated. LEDs housed in the luminaire head ensure that the light is distributed symmetrically or asymmetrically in an energy-efficient manner via a light panel. This means that not only individual workplaces, but also entire offices can be illuminated to levels beyond the requirements of DIN standards – creating daylight-like conditions at the workplace

Technically, VITAWORK has a lot to offer: While three different luminous fluxes of up to 17,000 lumens are available for optimum adaptation depending on room size, the 4,000 Kelvin VITAWORK model illuminates consistently in neutral white conditions and creates a pleasant atmosphere. And in 2020, a HCL variant that offers variably adjustable colour temperatures according to the needs of the respective user will be launched. The luminaire was designed by yellow design in cooperation with Prof. Günter Horntrich from recyclable aluminium and with its clear, geometric lines has a very architectural appearance. Both the grey and white versions also match very different interior design styles, so that the floor lamp can be used universally. The most striking design feature is the flat luminaire head – its centre of gravity very close to the stand, which in turn provides both static and visual stability. The base, which is also very flat, ensures optimum weight distribution, passes the tilt-test, and can be easily slid under a desk or drawer cabinet.

‘The luminaire should serve the user as a good tool, without defining the room,’ says Jonathan Brune, LUCTRA’s Brand Director, of the brand’s latest addition to the range

While the materials used by VITAWORK are recyclable, the energy-efficient LEDs can be replaced or repaired and have a service life of around 250,000 hours, making the free-standing luminaire extremely sustainable. Jonathan Brune sums up LUCTRA's philosophy as follows: ‘Our products should be long-lasting and still be used in the office in ten years' time’. And this certainly applies to VITAWORK’s free-standing luminaire.
