To improve the look of the new workshop façade in Zurich-Glattbrugg, Burri Public Elements launched an invitation-only competition in spring 2014. The brief was to set concise accents in the intentionally minimalist architecture with a tarpaulin, 34 metres long and 6 metres high and illuminated at night.

Since 1961, BURRI’s long-established manufacturing site has been in Zurich-Glattbrugg, where the production facilities and offices have been comprehensively extended in recent years to keep pace with the company’s continuing success and ever-increasing volume of orders. To improve the look of our new workshop façade, we launched an invitation-only competition in spring 2014.

The brief was to set concise accents in the intentionally minimalist architecture with a tarpaulin, 34 metres long and 6 metres high and illuminated at night. Directed by Frédéric Dedelley, five artists participated in the competition. Graphic artist Trix Barmettler’s project convinced the jury with an abstract insight into the world of construction and design. Company director Martin Burri is delighted with the coherent and compact artwork, which has also met with positive comments from neighbours, suppliers and clients (from fitters to designers).

To complement the façade design, the new building, which incorporates the design department, production and the new light laboratory, contains collage-type exhibits in the form of light walls and curtains. With the theme “Elements go wild”, the generously dimensioned interiors are enlivened by a world of exotic fauna and flora into which various BURRI products are skilfully integrated to create an inviting atmosphere. Designed by Claudia Caviezel in collaboration with Frédéric Dedelley, the elements were nominated for the 2013 Design Prize Switzerland.
