The reason why we go back and forth over colour choices when designing interiors is because colour can make a real difference to how we feel. To make the decision clearer, before considering aesthetics, designers must start by focusing on the positive intentions of space – what is the client looking to achieve?
Once the intention is established, colour should not be underestimated: ‘The mood or feeling you want to create can often be achieved with colours, even at a subconscious level,’ says Sara Garanty, interior designer and colour expert. ‘As a rule, colour needs to be factored into the design process much earlier and considered to be just as important as the floor or section plan,’ she says.
Just as significant as the walls and flooring, the colour of the ceiling can contribute dramatically to building an atmosphere within a space. Garanty, a self-described ‘colour addict’ who specialises in colour theory, worked closely on refining the palette of Rockfon’s Color-all® range designed to bring more flexibility of expression to designers working with acoustic solutions.
Starting with Rockfon’s own intention to promote wellbeing, Garanty worked alongside three trend forecasters, balancing the psychology of wellbeing with elements such as aesthetics, modernity, and trends. Four hundred potential colours were whittled down to 34, and then arranged into four trend groupings (Uncluttered Wabi-Sabi, Calm Enclosure, Biophilic Awareness and Technology) to help designers find their match for any interior – be it relaxing, energising, natural, or futuristic.
Rockfon’s Color-all range seeks to encourage designers to have confidence and use colour to its full potential. ‘Colour is a dance between your brain and the world. Every colour is a universe of its own, it unfolds differently and it evokes different feelings and emotions within us,’ concludes Garanty.
