I once missed a flight because I was in the airport bookshop, reading. So engrossed was I that I'd completely forgotten why I was there. Having entirely missed the announcements requesting me to present myself at the departure gate, I unfortunately realised my error too late. (And, yes. It was embarrassing.)
Luckily, most passengers are more mindful when waiting at airports, with design playing a critical role in keeping us safe, relaxed and informed. When it comes to departure-lounge seating, there's a lot at stake, according to Ingmar Krupp, who heads up the transport division at Kusch+Co. 'The design and aesthetics of the furniture, the colour concept, the layout planning and the comfort all determine whether the passenger feels comfortable,' he explains. 'And what could be more important than the feel-good factor?'
What, indeed? But, if you’d like to see what this means in practice as opposed to just theory, then hop on a plane to China, where Kusch+Co have recently furnished the waiting areas at Beijing Daxing International Airport. (Just the latest in their 260-strong airport-reference-project list!) Designed by celebrated office Zaha Hadid Architects and with construction completed in a record four years, the new stellar space is home to 3,700 seat units of its Studio F.A. Porsche-designed 8000 Series bench: high-end seating before departing to high altitudes.
Frankfurt, too, has recently received the Kusch+Co treatment. The airport’s Terminal 2 has replaced 6,500 old seating units with, again, the 8000 Series bench, meaning greater comfort, privacy and, in general, well-being for passengers. First-class seating, even if you’re travelling economy.
