A unique building created through a unique collaboration
Mono by Glommen & Lindberg is a housing concept situated at the centre of the designerdense south-central Stockholm district of Södermalm. Mono stands out, in Sweden as a whole and in Södermalm, not only in terms of design and atmosphere, but also in the way it was conceived. The construction company Glommen & Lindberg have commissioned Note Design Studio and the architect firm Koncept Stockholm to design an entirely unique and select block of flats that makes the most of the space available in this listed part of Södermalm.

Södermalm is a densely developed area. There is virtually no available land to build on. Mono is one of a select few innovative construction projects that will be realised over the coming period. This is an inspiring and unique opportunity. JAN ÅKE Glommen & Lindberg’s vision is to build desirable housing in attractive locations. Through this pioneering project they have encouraged architects and designers to jointly come up with a strong housing concept. Glommen & Lindberg collaborate with Note Design Studio and other major Scandinavian design firms that are now participating in a major construction project for the first time with the objective of providing cutting edge housing for an increasingly demanding Scandinavian market.

Mono is completely unique – the construction of a small, detached block of flats on Södermalm is an unusual venture and a major responsibility. Being part of a small cutting edge team together with Glommen & Lindberg and Note is incredibly inspiring. – HANNA

Design and architecture will place mono at the heart of Södermalm
Note Design Studio and Koncept Stockholm are building Mono from scratch by means of a joint creative process that brings together each individual element, from façade cladding to interior design, into a unified whole.

This building is a positive contribution to urban densification. One of the challenges has been to make the interior solution as sustainable and captivating as the innovative façade and to collaborate with others on an integrated building with a distinct character. - DANIEL This part of Södermalm is recognised by its impressive industrial, modernist architecture. Mono is firmly planted in the surrounding urban, industrial landscape. It has a Scandinavian feel in terms of functionality while playful solutions and colourful details gives it a continental touch.

The interior design appears entirely functional at first glance. However, the apparent simplicity is complemented by superior-quality design features supplied by, for example, Mutina and Vola. The aim is to further enhance the architects’ vision and balance the strict exterior with an upbeat interior. Note Design Studio have combined a wide range of different materials in a distinct colour palette that is normally not associated with mainstream Scandinavian interiors.

A distinctly unique apartment signed Note Design Studio
Note Design Studio is responsible for the entire Mono interior design programme. The firm was recently named Designer of the Year by Residence Magazine and at the Swedish Design Awards. They have added a unique designer touch in terms of the way they have combined different materials with the addition of a distinct colour scheme. Considering the restricted floor space, the firm has taken our increasingly social lifestyle into account by creating room for many friends and long meals. Mono packs function, quality and atmosphere into every square metre. The Note designers have endeavoured to add a contemporary hotel ambiance through inviting corridors and plenty of communal spaces for social interaction.

Note Design Studio is bold enough to stick out from the crowd through cutting edge design. Stepping away from Scandinavian minimalism, they are making the most of every detail in a room by maximizing materials, colours and function. A great deal of care has been invested in each room in order to give it a distinct character. The same goes for kitchens and bedrooms. Note have selected high-quality materials throughout, and each room offers unique features and individual solutions.

Our aim is to create rooms that signal a certain emotion as you enter. We have to deliver the absolute best and we want to create something that has never been seen in Sweden before when it comes to this kind of project. DANIEL

Mono has a more continental than a Scandinavian feel to it. Site-specific solutions and a distinct style are more important than passing trends and Swedish standard solutions. All features and solutions are tailor-made – the choice of wood as well as everything down to each individual door handle has been selected to suit its purpose.

Note are highly conscious of the fact that unique solutions and well-integrated interiors are sustainable in the long term. It is a conviction that informs the firm’s interior and design solutions. Each room features unique solutions with references to design classics. Note Design Studio is committed to finding strong, lasting interior design solutions and a specific identity of the space that never goes out of fashion, says Daniel Heckscher of Note. – At its best, our philosophy means that we design homes where the first thing new owners don’t want to do is to rip out the kitchen and bathroom. What we do today must be just as valid and attractive in the future.

A contemporary building on classic ground designed by Koncept Stockholm
The architects at Koncept Stockholm have designed a building that stands out and fits in. Mono does not take up single square metre more than is absolutely necessary and it blends in well with the surrounding listed architecture. The building is as neat and compact as a townhouse that complements the surrounding space as well as adding something new – a refreshing newcomer in the urban environment.– Elegant, cutting-edge and inviting are words that well describe our creative collaboration. The building is elegant, but at the same time warm and inviting. This project has great potential for making its own, positive contribution to Södermalm.

High-quality, solid, sustainable materials such as concrete, wood, glass and brass are prominent features that age beautifully. Sharp bevelling on the façade and large windows with balconettes are inviting features facing the streetscape. The concrete structure has been given a light, warm sandy hue that blends in with the surrounding architecture. Wooden details include walnut-stained window frames and wooden façade cladding on the ground floor at street level with plenty of room for open-air restaurants that add life to the building itself and its surroundings.

The sharply bevelled concrete meets soft wood while large windows and balconettes open up the façade. The building is not shutting the world out; it’s an organic part of the neighbourhood that adds life to the area.

The city everyone wants exists here
Södermalm is an excellent example of how Stockholm has evolved during the course of the 20th century. Urbanization has made the area more attractive as people and businesses move in. New buildings and functions are added to the existing stone architecture. Dense city districts that have retained their old-fashioned charm are becoming increasingly popular, and Södermalm is rapidly turning into an attractive, contemporary city district. However, the area is extremely dense and there is virtually no land to build on. Therefore, despite a great demand for more housing, Mono will be one of only a few construction projects that will add an entirely new look to an area that will be further developed over the next few years. Mono is a new and exciting addition to the Södermalm cityscape that will bridge the gap between the old and the new. The old steam tram, Stockholm’s oldest rail transport, used to pass through the area around the turn of the last century.

Mono is an inspiring possibility and a unique opportunity. Mono is situated in a part of Södermalm that is still relatively unknown, but that is now becoming populated with young designers, entrepreneurs and architects. It is also an integral part of a lively cityscape that offers a great many functions and content such as offices, services and housing. The type of cityscape that urban planners and architects are striving to create in other parts of town is very much in existence here right now.
