Tijucopava House de AMZ Architects | Detached houses https://www.architonic.com/en/project/amz-architects-tijucopava-house/5105899 Thu, 19 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Tijucopava House is signed by AMZ Arquitetos led by the Brazilian architects Pablo Alvarenga and Adriana Zampieri. Located in the coast of São Paulo (Brazil), Serra do Guararu, the house opens up to its surroundings - the Atlantic Forest - keeping a constant dialogue between the interior of the house and its exterior exuberant landscape. Exploring the advantages of its lot accentuated slope, the house was raised to the tree tops, providing all main spaces a full view of the beach. To facilitate relocation, due to the steeply sloped site, a light and easily assembled construction method was chosen. A prefabricated cumaru wooden structure (measuring 4.5 x 3.75 m), profiled by a glass frame, was attached to a 5 meters tall concrete base. The house program was divided into three levels. The first level consists of the garage where the concrete base covers it while giving shape to the narrow pool on the upper plane. Architectural Restyling of a Villa in Bulciago (Lecco), Italy. The setting is the Brianza area, Italy, on the hills around Lecco. Here the building landscape is clearly marked by 1970s residential construction methodologies. The building restoration remodelled both distribution and composition, however maintaining the local character. This project grants a new lease of life to the originally horizontal duplex building through a new vertical dimension, which offers both units individual panoramic views and aspects of the garden, at one time limited to one or the other apartment. One ground floor apartment facing north east and, on the south west, a second, larger apartment on multiple levels alternate and develop, embracing both ground and first floor. OMA has designed three buildings for the three block site along Collins Avenue - an arts center, retail bazaar and car park. These distinct functions are linked by a sequence of public domains including a plaza, courtyard and marina dock. Partner-in-charge, Shohei Shigematsu commented: "Culture is at the core of Faena's vision, and has been the driving force for our collaboration in Miami Beach. By curating their neighborhood with programmatic diversity, Alan's sphere of influence extends beyond this development to the rest of Miami Beach." The Mill de Studio Gutgut | Office buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/studio-gutgut-the-mill/5105893 Wed, 18 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0200 The building of Mlynica is part of a large post-industrial area of Light Building Materials in Bratislava. Since 1960s, porous prefabricated concrete blocks, slabs and panels have been produced here. Production took place until 1992. After privatization, the new owners sold off the complex and a gradual disintegration of the structures began. The architectural design builds on the structural logic of the original building. The reinforced concrete frame filled with porous concrete masonry façade is retained and new programme is inserted into the existing container. The façade is opened up purposefully in places where it aligns with the new layout, without compromise and with respect to the load-bearing capacity of the existing perimeter structures. The new openings have a free and readable composition as opposed to the original rational mesh of window openings typical of an industrial building. Cells was born out of the experience that architect Taidelli has developed in the field of the design of social and healthcare facilities, including the Humanitas Medical School and Campus (completed 2017) and the Humanitas San Pio X Clinic in Milan (in progress), is also owed to the research the architect has developed together with Humanitas University’s Professor of Internal Medicine Raffaello Furlan, and Dr. Michele Gatti of IBM Italy, Research & Business. The installation is set in one of the most spectacular and most visited locations of Milan Design Week. Nestled under the garden of the neighbouring building, the interior of the new building shows a view of an impressive landscape. Near-natural far-sightedness The new house lies halfway between the village and the vineyard of Cortaillod. It appears to grow out of the ground below the garden of a building from the 1950s. The new building is barely noticeable from the road. The design blends in with the surroundings, but marks its presence with the stairs set into the roof and arouses the observer's curiosity. The aim was to gain the best benefit of the unique panoramic view and bring it, as far as possible, into the building. Therefore, the living area was located in the top level. Handelsbanken de Kohina | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/kohina-handelsbanken/5105887 Tue, 17 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Kohina designed the headquarters of Handelsbanken in Helsinki, an international bank of Skandinavia that operates in over 20 countries. Today it is one of the leading banks in the Nordic region, and the bank has 45 offices in Finland. Although Handelsbanken is an international operator, it aims to be local and wants to be close to the customer. Handelsbanken’s headquarters was relocating into new spaces and at the same time they wanted to develop the work environment, working methods and especially the lobby area. The main focus in the design process was the customer values. Handelsbanken wanted their values of to be strongly reflected into the new environment. The particularly high lobby area of the new head office set its challenges for the design of the space. Eventually the big, echoing space was designing with unique acoustic elements and furniture choices that at the same time reflect the sustainable values and Nordic style of Handelsbanken. Elisa being a pioneer in utilizing digitalization in working methods and developing multipurpose offices, the development process also took place at the headquarters. House in Miyamoto de Tato Architects | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/tato-architects-house-in-miyamoto/5105885 Tue, 17 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0200 At this house - a residence designed for a family of three and their many belongings - the client requested that the members of the family can feel close to each other regardless of where they are in the house. Moreover, private rooms were not needed because they feel that it is lonely to withdraw into one's space, and storage space was also unnecessary because they did not want to tuck things away. As a result of trying to find a form that allows the whole house to feel like one room while securing sufficient space for their belongings at the same time, we proposed a design to connect the flooring with a height difference of 700 mm, where the different levels can be used as tables and shelves. The floors build up as two spiral shapes, joins at the living room, and then separate into two again before arriving at the rooftop deck. By using this combination of two spirals, we were able to create multiple paths inside the house that allows different room compartments and changes in th… continue

The spatial organisation sets a scene of rest and dynamism, analogous to the city where a dynamic centre is surrounded by tranquil suburbs. Despite this, the spatial design has created a feeling of openness in which all the components connect to form a logical whole. <b>Ways of working</b> The new arrangement has more than doubled the number of personnel who have workspace in the building. Located in São Paulo, the Cidade Jardim Residence was designed by Perkins+Will to offer a perfect balance between nature and construction. Built in an approximately 1200m² terrain with considerable declivity, the project uses solutions commonly found in country homes to create a soothing atmosphere in the turbulent, chaotic scene from the big city. The connection between the house’s well defined volumes and it’s broad garden is the major agent in this design’s conception. The first volume, located in the ground floor, condenses the common areas such as living room, kitchen, barbecue area, pool and, of course, the garden. The split levels of the design define varied living spaces and echoes the multiple layers of civic space on 28th Street and the High Line. The plot is a rarity in the area; not only facing the sea-front, but also east-facing and on an almost-flat piece of land, covering 2,000 sq m. The views from the new property extend from the snow-capped southern Alps alongside Nice to the coast towards Monaco and Italy, as well as, in the near foreground, the bay and headland of La Garoupe. ‘Right at the beginning of the project, the client purchased the site and, with it, an existing, rather ugly 1950s house’, David Price explained. ‘He initially asked us for a major remodel, but his vision was so complex and ambitious that it made vastly more sense to us to demolish and start again, extending the vision further. When a sport hotel is reduced to the bare essentials, a feeling of freedom towards life as well as an unconventional architectural concept is created. The long, narrow building perches on the edge of steep terrain with the sweeping mountain forest in the background. The two lightly angled elements of the building follow the shoreline of the Heidsee. The front of the structure with a lobby, bar and restaurant faces the entrance to the Rothorn cable car invitingly and forms the communal center of the hotel. An additional four floors with a total of 96 rooms are supported above this massive ground-floor foundation where the generously scaled winter sport room and bicycle room are located. The hotel unites the atmosphere of a mountain chalet with the liberating feeling of a campervan and the functionality of a ship’s cabin. Developed to expand the length of available shoreline, the development brings the sea into the desert to create a series of canals that are anchored by several docks and marinas and activated by many other recreational activities. The five plots of the five residences sit on one of the inner canals overlooking the sea. From an early stage, the idea was to develop a sense of unity, using the same architectural language of simple plane geometry, as well as the same basic concept and programmatic organization, resulting in a contemporary image of continuity and proportion, where slight harmonious variations guarantee complexity and diversity to this set of houses. The program involves an interpretation of the Kuwaiti way of life and its needs, relating the main daily living areas with the beach, exterior patios, gardens and pool areas. Wildwood Plaza de Studio Vulkan Landschaftsarchitektur | Parks https://www.architonic.com/en/project/studio-vulkan-landschaftsarchitektur-wildwood-plaza/5105868 Thu, 12 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0200 Today the urban dweller searches for increasingly powerful experiences of ‘landscape’ and ‘nature’ in shrinking territories on the edge of town. It has become the charge of the landscape architect to look for new languages which at once immerse us in the sensations of landscape while providing functional space for recreational uses. Thus a genre of ‘soft tourism’ rethinks recreational space. The City of Uster is surrounded by three distinct landscape typologies, each with a strong atmosphere and materiality: woodlands, glacial drumlins and lake marshes. For a new path encircling the city our design proposes a circular void, ‘a looking glass’ or cyclorama from which to immerse oneself and observe these various landscapes. The first phase, three woodland plazas, has just been completed. Writer John Fowles describes the ‘uncapturability’ of the woods. “Nowhere [but in the woods] are the two great contemporary modes of reproducing reality, the word and the camera, more at loss... On the roof garden of the new University of the Arts on the site of the former Toni factory, the outdoor space creates a green oasis for students in an area where there has been a surge of new high-rises, technical buildings, chimneys, atriums and concert halls. Here, plants grow in wooden boxes stacked to create a pixel-like rugged landscape. It is a paradoxical garden: built in no time and ready for use on the final day of construction, it hasn’t, unlike most parks, gone through a long development phase. Yet the lush garden is far from finished – its primary principle is not growth, but decay. A 2,600 m2 urban world with the appearance and radical individuality of a small private garden. The stacked boxes were precultivated over two years with a colourful mix of plants suitable for the environment, including perennials, herbs and small shrubs such as willow. There are two stone walls with exquisite color and interesting texture which are bare because of the loss of lime plaster indoors. They are reserved as the background of audio and visual room. Walking into the cinema, you will not find these traditional screens but rows of small televisions. They are generated from the idea of “dark box” used for shooting in the 18th century. Through an abstract transformation, their forms are presented in a harmonious manner. Dark box can be considered as camera’s predecessor, it is an optical instrument that reflects images on the screen. As light enters the dark box through the lens, it is reflected through a mirror onto frosted glass, forming an image on the glass. Dark boxes morph into rectangular columns that crisscross each other in the lobby ceiling, forming a dynamic ceiling feature. Due to great dedication, perseverance and a tenacious struggle for the client’s strong desire to build their home in this very attractive place, a construction permit could finally be successfully acquired. When designing a law firm, the requirements are different than when designing an advertising agency or an IT startup. Therefore, it is important to first get to know the working methods and the clients in order to optimize the interior design individually. A responsible approach to design does not mean tearing down walls randomly and forcing open space office structures, as is often the case. While the free design of the facade and the horizontal windows were already a given, extra care has been invested into giving the layout a matching free design of openness and continuity. From an urban perspective, the two external facades of the apartment have the unique quality of being notable boundaries between residential quarters and vast strips of greenery belonging to two of the largest parks in the Sofia green system. The free plan thus expands its Modernist palette, as it actually fulfills its purpose to let the living environment in, which to us is a rare and curious condition in downtown city context. The clients desired a house centered on large, light-filled central spaces where the kids and friends of the family would love to hang out today and also ten years from now. This space also acts as a welcoming, warm kind of “Panopticon that allows the boys the freedom to be boys while the parents are strategically within ear, if not always eyeshot, to arbitrate, adjudicate and apply basic medical direction” (the client’s words!). The front façade is an interpretation of a traditional townhouse—a simple composition that blends in with the neighborhood but hints at the modern interior through scale and material choice. The beautiful but outdated five-storey building originally divided into small corridors with an endless number of office rooms for sure needed a thorough makeover. Casper Schwarz architects were entrusted with developing and implementing a new concept encouraging communication, efficiency and collaboration. Focusing on creating larger rooms, natural routing and inevitable meetings between people in a very informal and non-mandatory setting, the workspaces are now divided into communicative areas, regular work areas and privacy areas. Switching from one area to another is easy and requires minimal effort as if any excuse not to flex around cooperating with colleagues is eliminated. Several patterns continue

When up for renovation, in house architect Peter Schjøtt Andersen embraced the opportunity to feed acoustic materials to the venue to soften the noise level of the building whilst adding a homely and warm look and feel as well. All this to create a sense of belongingness and an ideal workspace for students finishing their Master’s Thesis – maybe at a higher quality level and within a shorter period of time due to the beneficial surroundings. A goal in favour of both students and university. This involved a major re-think to ensure the building being structured around ideas about creating new flexible learning environments. Contrasting this with very old learning models, such as 17th century dissection laboratories to generate areas as the Object Learning Lab (a museum quality environment) and The Conservatory (a 150 seat lecture theatre) for learning “in the round”. This level of contrast is played out further by the creative themes The Salon and The Warehouse. The Faculty of Arts specifically didn’t want standard-looking classrooms and The Salon and Warehouse themes clearly push the boundaries between interior architecture and pure decoration. Each space has a story to tell that has inspired its design. Principal at ARM A… continue

As is often the case in the historic buildings of the San Francisco’s Presidio, structural concrete columns and ridge skylights imposed a repetitive infrastructure that could not be altered. These fixed elements acted as a source of inspiration for the design. The rhythm of the exposed columns organizes a progression through the office and serves various programmatic needs of the employees and guests. Arriving from the elevator lobby, staff and visitors are greeted by a continuous wood-clad wall with a pivoting door that veils the reception area and the lush landscape of the Presidio beyond. The interior was conceptualised to maximize the scenic views and create an ambience suited to the modern entertainer. Because the Fairmont building overlooks the Atlantic seaboard, the interior of the penthouse was oriented to offer dramatic sea views and stunning sunset vistas from every angle. The look-and- feel focused on elegance and masculinity. Inhouse started the project with a blank canvas and provided a turnkey solution which enabled full project management from line drawings right through to completion and handing over of the keys. “We started the project with an empty shell,” says Inhouse Director Aidan Hart. “It was a grey, bare concrete ‘box’!”. Products in copper are part of many design collections, in many cases for commercial purposes. It has become a one-dimensional material, that is often applied as a skin that sells the product. However, there is much more to say about this intriguing material than that it is simply beautiful. The world’s hunger for copper is ever increasing. Huge amounts of ore have to be taken from the earth’s crust to supply our industries with enough copper. Probably without knowing, we all contribute to this when making a phone call, driving a car or simply switching on the light. It has become an indispensable material in our daily lives. The mines that are the source of the ore, are very intriguing. Their immense scale, relief patterns and the colors of the ore and rocks, are often very beautiful. However, due to building regulations stipulating that the footprint remain unchanged, house was rebuilt entirely. Falsterbo is one of the most popular resort regions in southern Sweden, becoming densely populated over summer. Although the site sits within a residential neighbourhood, one of the criteria of the brief was to create a family home that offered privacy. This was achieved by placing the garage at the front of the house, facing the street. Visitors must follow a path that leads alongside the garage to access the home. Surrounded by factories and office complexes within a highly industrialized area of Stuttgart, the existing Vector Informatik site was void of virtually of any green space. The existing landscape consisted of only buildings and parking lots and employees lacked exterior places to take breaks, work outdoors or immerse themselves in nature. With the new expansion, the clients understood the necessity for creating places of refuge for their employees’ happiness and enjoyment. Additionally, the clients understood the value of nature, and through the collaborative efforts between the design team and clients, a vibrant, green working environment was created. T… continue

Making the best use of the existing houses is the one of the most valuable solutions for sustainability in the world. Regenerating architectures leads to expanding the histories and environments of the cities and contributes to the cultures and diversities. Making the wood structure strengthened as well as beautifully designed is the main theme of this project. When the wood frames encounter the light, beauty with order would come into being. The owner of the house wants it be renovated because her family would live with his mother. They wanted to expand the house to add the rooms. Instead of making the additional building in the small garden, the terrace is created in the small garden next to the main room functions as an outdoor room for them. Considering the existing columns and beams to design the house, the beams play the principal role. The existing beams are placed at random, the new beams are evenly added to continue

Tommy Bahama HQ de SkB Architects | Office facilities https://www.architonic.com/en/project/skb-architects-tommy-bahama-hq/5105812 Mon, 26 Mar 2018 00:00:00 +0200 When Tommy Bahama first moved to the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle in 2005, it had fewer than 200 employees occupying roughly 78,000-square-feet of space. With a headcount now twice that, designing and building a commercial interior that not only accommodated this tremendous progress, but also stayed true to their core values as a company was at the forefront of the project team’s vision. Inspired by the Tommy Bahama ethos to “Make Life One Long Weekend,” the new 120,000-square-foot office design builds upon the attributes that have made Tommy Bahama so successful—the embodiment of island life and casual sophistication. The spaces feature a natural material palette and rich textures such as woven fabric wall coverings and rough-honed stone. And the open, casual setting fosters a relaxing environment in which to work, a place not unlike a modern beach house. The design is focused on the user experience and reflects the attributes found throughout the brand and its prod… continue

It is accommodated by a small space with large windows overlooking a quiet street very few meters from the bustle of Slaveikov Square in Sofia. The space consists of two functional parts - one is the bar where the drinks are prepared, and the other part is the large marble table room, where workshops for coffee making and various social events are organized. All design elements in the space, and the materials chosen for them, are a reaction to the objects and rituals it shelters. Apartment in Born de CaSA - Colombo and Serboli Architecture | Living space https://www.architonic.com/en/project/casa-colombo-and-serboli-architecture-apartment-in-born/5105809 Mon, 26 Mar 2018 00:00:00 +0200 This apartment is located in the oldest part of Barcelona, in an ancient building that dates back to the 13th century, in the neighborhood known as Born. The brief was to completely transform the old property into a new vibrant flat, home of a young Italian woman, a fashion professional. The highly compartmented layout originally included three bedrooms, two occupying the street side and a third one in the entrance space and was placing living and kitchen in the dark interior of the plot. The new arrangement overturns completely the original layout. The scheme is thought to fully bring back and enhance the great proportions of the ancient spaces, with 4m high-vaulted ceilings, huge windows and thick walls. All of previous partitions have been demolished, leaving only one thick structural wall, around the new bedroom. The key piece of the project and the only added partition is a thick, bespoke storage unit that divides the entrance from the living area, converting the hall into a di… continue

The house, in the south of Antwerp, Belgium, has been reconverted by Poot-architects. We were commissioned to create a spacious family kitchen in a newly built room, connecting the old house and the garden. The kitchen is divided in three parts: in the center of the room is a big freestanding isle. This block has a pink-veined marble worktop laying on a cabinet with brass fronts. A bespoke flower pot in the same marble comes on top and has integrated electricity sockets, called lapris by Van Den Weghe. The reflections of the terrazzo floor tiles in the brass doors create a dematerializing effect. The other two components of the kitchen have a more traditional materialization. A countertop in HPL and fronts in sandblasted and lacquered pine plywood. You enter the home office by a big Yves Klein-blue sliding door. For this apartment, we thought of a project that transforms the classic and compartmentalized distribution apartment into a large house with continuous and flexible spaces. The living room is connected to the kitchen being both part of the same room, invaded by the light of the street, which is introduced into the apartment through four big windows. To get amplitude and height, the old false ceilings have been eliminated in the main rooms of the house. We also intervened in the interior design of the furniture that mixed with the warm of the materials, create a cozy & contemporary apartment. Alejandro Giménez Architects (ARKIMIA) continue

The French Laundry de Snøhetta | Restaurants https://www.architonic.com/en/project/snhetta-the-french-laundry/5105805 Fri, 23 Mar 2018 00:00:00 +0100 Snøhetta, in collaboration with Chef Thomas Keller and Envelope A+D, has completed a new kitchen and courtyard renovation at The French Laundry in Yountville, California. Opened in 1994, Thomas Keller’s three-starred Michelin restaurant has been highly regarded as a mecca for fine French cuisine at the forefront of culinary culture over 20 years. The design is the first major overhaul to the historic site in over two decades and doubles the size of the existing landscape for guests while providing a world-class working environment for Keller and his team to innovate their craft and service. A new kitchen annex houses the French Laundry’s support functions, including the butchery, produce breakdown, and wine collection, storing up to 15,000 bottles. To begin the design process, the designers spent time with Chef Keller’s team, observing the complex choreography of the kitchen. Akademeia High School in Warsaw de Medusagroup | Schools https://www.architonic.com/en/project/medusagroup-akademeia-high-school-in-warsaw/5105804 Thu, 22 Mar 2018 00:00:00 +0100 <b>Akademeia High School in Warsaw</b> Changes in the public education system in Poland have not kept up with the modern changes in the lives and activities of young people. Generation of the so-called millenials, which entered the high school age, forced a thorough reformulation of the approach to education. It also forced a review of the principles of shaping school buildings. The failure of the public sector began to use the private sector, producing a product that meets the requirements of education for young people. Everyone works there in the system of oval tables, the teachers do not have a teacher's room, and they remain permanently part of a compact, educational ecosystem. This was the basis of the overall idea of creating a lifestyle atmosphere, encouraging to stay in school after hours of classes. <b>A huge tribune</b> is organising the space in center of the schoolyard. TechPark Kanlux de Medusagroup | Office buildings https://www.architonic.com/en/project/medusagroup-techpark-kanlux/5105803 Thu, 22 Mar 2018 00:00:00 +0100 The quest to find a simple and practical camouflage in order to hide the imperfections of the post-military facility, have made the architects reach for pre-fabricated solutions. Ever since Radzionków – a place full of typical workers’ tenements (in Silesian Industrial Region) – found itself in direct neighbourhood of the A1 motorway, the new era of development hit this tiny, Silesian town. In the past, there was yet another factor impacting this architectural landscape, i.e. an old-time military colony. Its traces, such as barracks and familoki (tenements for workers), can still be found on both sides of the Stanisław Sikorski Street. This venue was also chosen as the location for the new Kanlux office building. In an attempt to revitalise this dilapidated area, one of the buildings, going back to the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, with flat roofing and simple cuboidal body, has been incorporated into the new design. The pavilion, composed of four adjacent cuboids, with an atrium… continue

Having undergone radical changes in the last few years, Dolní Břežany is a modern and attractive place for living. This installation brings shade, shelter, seating and charm to the Paseo Ponti in the Miami Design District. Like ivy that grows along the street, Nuage promenade engages with buildings and facades, creating a natural relationship with the surrounding architecture. The sun shines through the steel and colored glass structure that mimics cloud apertures, casting graphic shadows that vibrate with blues and greens like stained-glass windows crossed by the sun in cathedrals. Local rustic plants envelop the project, with trees jutting through the clouds to the sky, or relaxing against them. Quickly, vines will colonize the system, gaining depth and patina throughout the years, encircling the quiet ponds and plant beds arranged along the path. In a specific and referenced work based on emblematic Parisian operations such as the building of the Atlas passage designed by Eugène Beaudoin and Marcel Lods or the one by Henri Sauvage located rue Vavin, the first building of our operation, implanted rue du Père Corentin, presents a stepped facade combined with terraces to solve the wide gap existing between the buildings that surround it : a R+2 Mansart-type pavilion and a R+12 building resulting from the modernity implanted freely in disregard of any alignment. This work of graduation also emanates from a desire to open this very narrow street to the sun, to the sky, and to desaturate the noise of the street by avoiding the bottleneck of 2 facades strictly in vis-a-vis.
