The light TMS was the first object of STRALA and is made out of one metal sheet by hand. It was different to everything else we knew until this day and got displayed in newspapers like the „New York Times“. Meanwhile the series TMS is a classic and is traded as vertus in auctions and international design galleries. In 2006 it was awarded the “European Luminaire of the Year”. TMS is available in a limited edition. We produce every copy after order in our studio in the historical renown “Werkbundsiedlung Neubühl” in Wollishofen in Switzerland and label it with STRALA, design year and serial number.
Rope dance between strength and vulnerability
With the series TMS I researched the vulnerability and convertibility of plains and reached the borders of the material’s possibilities. Aim was a transformation by only minimal injury of the matter. A rope dance between strength and vulnerability inside the matter. A rigid metal sheets gets worked with lasers in such a way that it can easily be folded by hand. A plain mutating to a volume. It is a metamorphose – not generating a completely different object. Rather a metamorphose on half way. Depending on the perspective, the result flickers between emptiness, surface, and volume. Similar to a picture puzzle.
