‘Less is more,’ we often hear. Finding beauty in simplicity, designer Alain Gilles blends straight lines with gentle curves in his Re-Form tables for Wewood – a trio of solid, robust volumes adaptable for modular use or as standalone pieces.

Belgian designer Alain Gilles likes his designs to be readable, easy and simple for users to understand and interact with. The new coffee table series Re-Form for Wewood is precisely that – a family of three elegant tables, varying slightly in shape and size, yet clearly conceived as a group to be used together or apart, open for all kinds of constellations and arrangements.

‘I don’t want my projects to look complicated. I want them to be strong conceptually, different and innovative while still giving the impression that there is something natural and obvious about them. With the Re-Form project, we are pushing the modular logic very far and still maintaining a visually simple, warm and readable object. It’s meant to be a playful project; one where the interaction with the user is part of the design,’ says Gilles.

Having known each other for many years and equally fond of each other’s work, Gilles and Wewood’s creative director, Joana Marcelino, set up a collaboration on a Wewood project. The designer was intrigued by the Portuguese brand’s mastery in woodworking, which inspired him to propose a design that challenges the material’s limits and explores its creative possibilities. ‘From a purely formal point, this project is probably the first recent one where I play with such sharp edges and flat angular surfaces, even though the pieces feel very friendly and round,’ explains Gilles. ‘I imagine you could say that this project looks simple, but as is very often the case, what appears simple is not always the easiest to produce! Because the design is, in a way, very minimal, any imperfection would stand out. We are working with non-standard wood thicknesses in this project.’

The Re-Form tables not only seem solid; they are actually produced with premium solid wood. With their chunky proportions and soft curvy shapes, these act as stable, durable and comfortable additions to any lounge interior.
