Appealing to workplaces struggling to tempt workers back from home-working, Campers&Dens is a flexible acoustic pod system from Orangebox, a Steelcase brand, designed to bring privacy and control to open-plan offices. Offering structure, vision and fun, the system is inspired by the campervan and the community-forging nature of the campsite.

The elegant and customisable pods, cabins and awnings, made with wooden slats and colourful fabrics, offer something totally new to the workplace: 'We see spaces that offer either complete privacy or complete openness – but there are very few options in between. My goal was to design a whole suite of interior architecture that explores that “in-between” area,' says Mark Partridge, design manager at Orangebox.

Materials, finishes and colours

Fully adaptable to any workplace interior, Campers&Dens configurations can be built in many variations – with different materials, finishes and colours. Integrated or freestanding seating and tables (flexible for inside or outside the pods) can be added and technology and whiteboards integrated.

'The idea is fun – it injects vibrancy into the workplace at this pivotal point in the history of work'

Functional elements of the design include corner glass panels that connect users to the open-plan space, as well as semi-private areas. Adaptable for future use, Campers&Dens pods are fully demountable to be moved, re-positioned or re-used as needed.

With Campers&Dens, a flat open-plan workplace can become a multi-dimensional neighbourhood of work zones

One thing, however, transcends functionality and future-proofing: 'The idea is fun,' says Partridge, 'It injects vibrancy into the workplace at this pivotal point in the history of work.'
