The reinvention of the table lamp: Joker from Regent Lighting

Imagine a desk lamp. What image comes to mind first? Most likely, a model with lamp head, arm and base, as found in most workplaces. This type of lamp was created in the 1920s. A classic example is the Anglepoise, designed in 1933 by British designer George Carwardine. Since then, numerous versions of the Anglepoise have been further developed, but each one is based on the same principle.

However, our way of working and working environments have changed massively over the last decades. In addition, there is a growing demand for personalisation in this area, taking into account the needs of each individual. Individually adjustable office chairs and desks have long been available, so why not personalised lighting? After all, completely new technical possibilities exist today to enable such things. Swiss company Regent Lighting has used this opportunity to launch a new type of table lamp – one that puts previously popular models in the shade.

Joker is a flexible office lamp that adjusts to individual lighting moods at the touch of a button as well as being easy to move and transport. It conceals sophisticated, highly developed technology, and boasts design and operation that is reduced to the core. With its latest development, Regent Lighting has set itself the goal of bringing a type of light to the workplace that meets the individual, varying needs of everyone.

‘I wanted to give the user a ray of light which they could own. Which was angled so perfectly and precisely that it would not involve anyone else'

Designer Kornelius Reutter puts it like this: ‘I wanted to give the user a ray of light which they could own. Which was angled so perfectly and precisely that it would not involve anyone else. Where the Joker sits, the glow it spreads, the feeling it inspires. It is all up to, around and about … you.’

The lamp is designed as a flat stele form and features newly developed lighting technology. The vertical alignment with asymmetrical distribution directs light directly onto the work surface, but only where it is needed. Thanks to this smart light distribution, the luminaire is particularly energy-efficient. Distracting glare and multiple shadows are avoided. The result is homogeneous, first-class quality illumination that meets all the requirements of modern office lighting.

Using Tunable White technology, the luminaire can be infinitely adjusted to the personal lighting mood desired, according to workplace conditions and the light perception of the individual. The luminaire thus functions as an additional personal light which enables the complete individualisation of workplace lighting, regardless of the lighting mood in the room.

Unobtrusive, but not inconspicuous: the simple design and clear lines make Joker the ideal desk lamp

In both operation and design, emphasis was placed on simplicity and reducing elements to their fundamentals. The Joker is therefore very easy to connect via USB-C interface, it’s light, slides gently on the table surface and takes up very little space. It can, therefore, be moved and repositioned quickly as required. And a single button is all that’s required to control the various settings such as colour temperature and brightness.

This process of reduction to the essential is also reflected in the design of the luminaire. Joker is simple, yet special and well-thought-out – right down to the last detail. The straightforward, rimless, flat profile design impresses with its elegant simplicity and clear lines, and is available in three versions: black, silver or bronze.

With Joker, Basel-based Regent Lighting is revolutionising the idea of the table lamp and once again pushing the boundaries of manufacturing technology. A patent for the innovative lighting technology has already been registered. And who knows? This simple luminaire may one day join the Anglepoise on the list of classic, iconic table lamps.
