In 2019, the Tetris-Challenge – thought up by two Swiss police officers and which involved them displaying in a neat arrangement all the contents to be found in their patrol car – captured the world’s imagination and became a viral hit. The Kondo method for filling cupboards in the most space-saving way possible, invented by the Japanese author of the same name, Marie Kondo, has become a mass movement. And with ‘Death Cleaning’, the Swedes are calling for a clear out.

Amidst all the hype around perfect order, family-owned company raumplus is remaining calm. For years, the Bremen-based company has been providing reliable solutions for efficiently transforming space into storage space. What doesn't fit is simply made to fit: there are no unused niches or impractical edges in raumplus' designs. So hoarding is not a problem because, from the outside, the chaos remains hidden if desired.

The most useful things are not always those you want to see every day. raumplus’s solutions place the home office in the living room or the laundry room in the bathroom in such a way that you could easily forget about work

Thinking around the corner is one of raumplus' favourite disciplines, as a current project – which called for unusually small-scale designs – impressively demonstrates: a dormitory in Straubing (southern Germany) should be optimally equipped and allow maximum usability in minimum space. The furnishing of an initial ‘trial room’ met all the requirements and so raumplus went on to install 19 additional built-in cupboards in the dorm, each with revolving doors and each with a surface area of 1.5 sqm. The smallest of spaces is used in a well-thought-out and stylistically appealing manner.

An order of a completely different size, this time from China, also posed little problem for raumplus. The company supplied 24 40-foot containers with custom-made components for a cabinet project that could only be assembled on site. raumplus has established itself internationally as a reliable partner for architects and planners in the contract sector, where large order volumes are often involved.

Custom-made products from raumplus transform alcoves and pitched ceilings into useful spaces and storage areas, meaning it’s goodbye to those nooks and crannies

This is due to the company's unconventional and precise approach to all customer wishes and special project features. And as raumplus CEO Carsten Bergmann puts it: Because ‘always going straight from wall to wall would be too easy’. Whether storage space for toys or a home office with shelves – raumplus makes use of space in small alcoves, between doors and under sloping surfaces.

So the future can come: Even as living space in the cities becomes more scarce, raumplus has things under control. One above the other. One below the other. A little like Tetris.
