Italian furniture brand Cassina is at the forefront of an essential revolution that is currently disrupting the furniture industry as manufacturers look for new ways to design and develop more sustainable products. At this year’s Milan Design Week, Cassina launched the Moncloud sofa by Patricia Urquiola which embodies the company’s pioneering approach to integrating circularity throughout the design and manufacturing process.

Cassina’s intensive research and development enabled Moncloud’s soft curves to be sculpted in circular materials, marking a major design progress for the furniture industry. Unlike most sofas, which are made using polyurethane moulds, Moncloud minimises the use of this material by replacing it with quilted, recycled PET wadding that wraps around the backrest and armrests to create a relaxed and comfortable shape that recalls an enveloping duvet.

The clue is in the name: Moncloud's invitingly soft and cushioned forms are evocative of clouds. Its individual elements can be easily taken apart at the end of its life cycle. Photos: Francesco Dolfo

The small amount of foamed elements used in the sofa are made with CIRCULARREFOAM®, a polyurethane product made with a percentage of recycled polyols. As the parts are not glued, these inserts and the sofa’s other components can be completely separated at the end of the product’s lifespan, thus facilitating their recycling and recovery.

The elegant, comfortable and versatile seating system features a minimal wooden base supporting a distinctive contoured form that appears to float like a cloud. The generous cushions are wrapped in fabric upholstery, with a neat fold along the centre of the backrest providing a unique and sophisticated detail. The result is an attractive and innovative sofa that embodies the aesthetic values, production excellence, quality and durability of Cassina’s furniture collection.
