Bover’s Skybell system is a light that its designer Manel Molina, of Estudi Manel Molina, describes as being ‘cut-out of the dark’. It is simple and subtle – yet complex in its intention to softly illuminate space, without drawing attention to itself. Bover’s most versatile luminaire with plenty of modular capabilities, the Skybell system is defined by its graceful, black, extruded, aluminium, elongated bells. Decorative and architectural qualities lend the Skybell to sculpting many types of spaces; from softly lit intimate interiors, to atmospheric hospitality projects, and functional corporate spaces.

‘The first images that came to mind when we started thinking about the Skybell were those of a necklace, a jewel, a garland, and a catenary. It stopped being a lamp to become a system,’ says Bover. ‘Throughout the design process, the order and distribution of the ‘bells’ was a key factor: first, they were close together, then they were separated, then we liked the continuous sequence of bells, repeated one after the other, or in a circle.’

This elegant flexibility of form encouraged Skybell system’s modular design, which can be adapted to suit the scale, style and dynamism of different spaces. The extruded aluminium profiles of the system are designed to be customisable into a wide variation of combinations, providing a joyful framework for designers to shape space with.

The system hosts three profile typologies: curved, linear and catenary, which, due to each forming a family of its own, offer a wide breadth of possibilities. Then, even further flexibility can be achieved by combining the linear and circular profiles together. With 30º or 40º optics, the bells can be adjusted to four heights for a dynamic effect, or kept level in balance. With so many variables, complex compositions of structures and lighting dynamics can be created within the Skybell system, giving designers ultimate creative freedom.
