Working with what can be sourced locally without losing sight of the future and new streams of development – if there’s one thing the new generation at MAB knows how to do, it’s how to combine these crucial components. Anybody familiar with MAB knows that the family-run company stands for traditional woodcrafting and quality furniture for the living room, bedroom and office. While the repertoire still includes products like Carmen, the firm’s classic wooden wall unit system, the modern furniture designs by daughter Simona Föhn are also proving very popular. Her colourful designs experiment with forms and materials and are convincing proof that tradition and innovation are by no means mutually exclusive.

The company has evolved along with the changing needs and wants of its customers – in fact, it even manages to stay one step ahead: “We’ve definitely become more understated, feminine and flexible,” says Marco Föhn, who took over as manager from his father Peter Föhn, a member of Switzerland’s Council of States, four years ago. Even so, there have been few changes to the company’s philosophy. Sustainability continues to be a key issue: tropical wood is taboo, for instance. Instead, the firm processes select grade timber and only uses water-based varnishes. And customers can even opt for striking reclaimed wood from an original Muotathal house. The result is unique furniture tailored to customers’ needs.

MAB: Founded in 1951 as a simple joinery, the company has evolved into a producer of distinctive handcrafted Swiss furniture – due in no small part to the takeover by Peter and Priska Föhn in 2001. Today their son Marco Föhn heads the company, while his sister Simona Föhn is responsible for the creative side of the business. Next year, son Andreas will also become part of the management team.
