The design of Villeroy & Boch’s Artis collection transforms the bathroom into a haven of calm and comfort with its new shades – Teal (photo), Almond, Pure Black and Nightfall

Designer Gesa Hansen presents her nature-inspired shades, with which she has created new material and colour worlds for Villeroy & Boch’s Artis washbasin collection
Deceleration as a ritual
Although the bathroom still fulfils the purpose of daily personal hygiene, it is increasingly being seen as a space for retreat – one that should also be emotionally resonant. Logically, sterile minimalism no longer has any place in it. In today’s bathrooms, people engage in rituals of self-care, relaxation and solitude – a pause from hectic, day-to-day life. And this is exactly what should be reflected in the choice of furniture, the bathtub, the washbasin and, of course, the materials and colours.‘The bathroom is the last truly private space in the home, so its design is of particular importance’

Almond impresses with its warm, matt surface that pairs harmoniously with natural materials such as wood and stone
Inspired by nature
There are four shades that, in their emotional expression, could hardly be further apart: take Almond, for example – a tone that radiates a warming gentleness and pairs especially well with light-coloured natural stone surfaces such as travertine, oak and clay-hued accents. Or Pure Black, which, contrary to first instinct, is far from appearing gloomy or flat, but has an elegant depth. Both are reminiscent of natural water sources: the mysterious depth of a mountain lake in one, and the lively energy of an ocean that is always in motion in the other

Inspired by the deep-blue moments of nature, the Nightfall shade creates an atmosphere of tranquillity and comfort
Being human in a sense of security
And why is nature playing such a major role in the design of living spaces right now, including bathrooms? The answer can be seen quite clearly in our present day: an era of high technology that is, once again, beginning to reconnect with the rhythms and conditions of the natural world, rather than striving with all human force to rise above them. More and more people are now finding themselves overwhelmed by the computer-driven world, with its glowing screens and ever-sounding devices.‘Flowing transitions, organic forms and natural materials and colours create an environment that conveys a sense of calm and security’

Whether the light-toned Almond (top) or the dark Pure Black (bottom) – the four matt colours embody intimacy, calm and balance in everyday life
