MDT: Infinite flexibility

The innovative system comprises square and diamond-shaped canopy elements that can be combined in various ways to form a filigree yet stable structure. The individual elements are joined together using intersections at the ends of the support arms, while textile connectors between the individual umbrellas ensure that the covered area is also protected from the weather. The system is complemented by an equally versatile flooring system that accounts for level changes in the landscape and matches the covered area. The design team realised that speed of assembly was the primary problem faced by the venue operators that manage events in outside spaces. Until now, tents and marquees were the only option for protecting large outdoor areas from adverse weather. The Tensilation canopy system offers a flexible alternative, which is also light-weight and easy to erect. To render the system as light and flexible as possible, it weighs just 30 kg at a height of almost four metres.

As a longer-term architectural solution, Tensilation provides cover for walkways and unusual spaces, naturally flexing to fit within the urban environment. MDT has established its own Smart Materials unit and the material qualities of the MDT-tex developed PTFE fabric provides Tensilation with a long service life and UV resistance. The high quality fabric used for each canopy is 100 % waterproof, crease-resistant, colour-fast, and tear-resistant, ensuring the durability and longevity of this unique product.
