Ideas in Motion
Six years ago, German office-furniture brand Wilkhahn launched its revolutionary ON chair, which applied kinematic principles to stimulate the body's core muscle groups and joints while seated at a desk. The company's new IN chair offers a more compact and affordable alternative that uses technologies pioneered by the automotive and sportswear industries to intuitively integrate regular motion into the working day.

The IN chair from Wilkhahn is designed to facilitate movement in the back, hips and legs through a patented 3D kinematics system known as Trimension

To reduce the price of the IN chair, a range of innovative materials and processes are applied, including a single-piece backrest and seat frame with varying levels of flexibility built in

Joints at the rear of the seat and back frame align with the hips to enable a wide range of motion; the swing arms each move independently to synchronise with the body

The chair’s backrest cover is produced using a 3D knitting technique, which, with its various, elastically designed zones and a visible, built-in lumbar support, provides support where required

Organic shapes combined with straightforward and honest materials give the IN chair an athletic appearance that is accentuated in the versions with brightly coloured components
