Subtle boundaries in the collab of Bauwerk Parkett X balbek bureau

A shared space at the heart of a creative office subtly stands out from the rest. Here, creative Dynamic and quiet retreats merge, achieved through the choice of materials that define and connect thresholds.

What is part of the daily professional life of the Swiss film production company Dynamic Frame, has now been implemented by the Kyiv-based architecture studio balbek bureau for the company's new office on the ground floor of an extraordinary new building by EM2N architects. The building is located in a former industrial district that has since become home to many creative offices. In a setting where polished cement floors largely dominate the stage, an inviting oasis of retreat has been created at the centre of it all – contrasting yet harmonious – fitted with flooring from the Spinpark collection by Bauwerk Parkett. The balancing ambience of the parquet surface brings a sense of calm to the dynamic hustle and bustle.

Designed in scenes

Dynamic Frame’s multifunctional open-plan office, which is regularly reconfigured to new constellations, has a deliberately preserved but refined raw-construction aesthetic, precisely reflecting the job description of the busy team in terms of functionality: flexible workstations, meeting zones for brainstorming and creative exchange, an indispensable editing studio, plus a kitchen with dining area, a private cinema and a storage depot.

In the centre of the space, a lounge area stands out from the industrial ambience with its natural vibrancy, while bringing a sense of homely flair

However, during the planning phase, the desire emerged to create a central place where people could escape the daily hustle as comfortably as possible. This inspired the idea of creating a lounge area in the centre of the space, which, with its natural vibrancy, contrasts subtly with the cement flooring, bringing a sense of homely flair to the otherwise very industrial ambience.

Close to cinema-ready

To bring this vision to life in the best possible way, adding a few inviting pieces of upholstered furniture was not enough. Something was needed to further emphasise the homely character – something that could only be achieved through the flooring, which inherently carries this essence. At the same time, the aim was to allow this area to visually stand out from the rest, creating the impression of a ‘room within a room’ where there is space for relaxation and recreation.

Spinpark has transformed the central area into a natural work of art, a place for relaxation and recreation

So what could be more suitable than a large natural wood surface that gives this area a private feel, yet integrates perfectly into the rest of the ambience? Laid in a classic ship's deck pattern, with the grain running diagonally to the installation direction, Spinpark by Bauwerk Parkett picks up on the dynamic energy of the surroundings. Its geometric design defines the approximately 40-square-metre area, where its hue blends with the adjacent wooden amphitheatre, offering a completely new flooring look. Patrick Reymond from atelier oї sums it up aptly: ‘With Spinpark, you have the opportunity to turn the floor into a natural work of art.’ Incidentally, the parquet surface was laid in a 4:3 ratio – echoing the dimensions of a classic film format.

Distinct yet unified

It was also important that the creation of this separate zone did not disrupt the flow of the space in the finer details, such as the transitions. The choice for Spinpark also proved to be ideal in this respect. ‘Wood and concrete harmonise very well visually. Thanks to its low profile and precise craftsmanship, Spinpark – like all other parquet formats from Bauwerk Parkett – can seamlessly adjoin other surfaces,’ says Pia Kautz, Head Brand & Communications at the Bauwerk Group. ‘The parquet adds a distinct, warm accent to the otherwise grey cement screed floor and visually separates the lounge area from the rest of the office. This creates a cosy feel to the space for team meetings or moments of personal reflection and pause in the dynamic working day of the creative professionals.’

Like a piece of furniture

Spinpark was developed by the Swiss creative studio atelier oї as a play on natural diagonals and realised using a new cutting technique. The two-layer parquet allows the oak to fully express its advantages. This, together with the fact that a seamless surface can be achieved by using a bevel-free manufacturing process, contributed significantly to the decision. Equally decisive was the fact that Dynamic Frame was already familiar with the advantages of this parquet flooring through their collaboration on the product film for Spinpark.
The fact that the affinity for warm, ochre tones, evident even during the early planning stages of the project, further supported the decision in favour of the naturally oiled solid wood parquet. ‘As in all the other rooms, wood – and in this case, the parquet floor as the largest piece of furniture – makes a significant contribution to the overall effect of the room. The natural material increases the general sense of well-being and can promote both concentration and creativity,’ Pia Kautz is convinced. ‘Parquet also has sound-absorbing properties that have a positive effect on the quality of life and work.’
