Designers of both residential and contract spaces are turning to new products to better utilise space in outdoor environments. Using the latest technology – including retractable and natural canopies, sophisticated outdoor heating and advanced artificial flora – designers can turn patios into parlours and decks into dining rooms. While outdoor spaces in the office and hospitality sectors, previously patronised only in the summer months, can provide year-round warmth and comfort. Glacial exterior ‘break’ areas and overlooked outdoor seating, quarantined with an infectious cold, are consigned to the past.

The 2019 German Design Special Award-winning Mesh XL floor lamp is the latest addition to the Mesh family. Its weather-resistant construction and materials bring maximum functionality and add an element of sophistication to exterior spaces
Constructed from turned aluminium, painted and resistant against water, weather and corrosion, Mesh is a contemporary reimagining of the classic bedside lamp, transformed for a life outdoors. Along with table, floor, wall and pendant options, there is also a Limited Edition Mesh table range, including four distinct personified versions of the light, with a variety of colourways, materials and matching personalities.
Designer of the Mesh collection, Marco Acerbis, introduced the lights at Light + Building 2018 as ‘dedicated to contract installations which require decisive and very visible products for outdoor seating areas under the stars.’ Mesh’s weather-resistant credentials make it a celebration of both light and design for outdoor living or dining spaces – either contract or residential.
Rather than hiding the lighting structures away, interior designers can turn them into an integral part of a sophisticated mise-en-scène.
