The former Jugendstil director's mansion built in 1904 was the last building to survive the demolition in 1972 of the Altes Chemisches Institut. It was last used as a laboratory by the Institute for Hygiene. The Tübingen office of Architekten + Partner Dannien Roller was granted the contract for the conversion of the protected building as a new university institute building. After a two year period of planning and conversion the Jugendstil mansion has been renovated according to monument preservation standards, expanded with an annex and turned over to the new owners.

In order to make the public facility handicap accessible, the existing building was augmented by a modern annex with an elevator tower accessible from the outside and an extended entryway awning and glazed bridge over three floors. The tower construction recalls the historical bridge formerly connecting the former director's residence with the Alte Chemie building. At the same time the broad exposed concrete awning connects the closed building with the public forecourt. The material and colour concept for flooring, surfaces and the new wood and glass walls consciously reference the historical residential use, providing a harmonious transition to the impressive Jugendstil solid wood staircase and the entry portal.
