Retail lights play a prominent role in the design of contemporary commercial spaces. The ones presented in this selection embody all the approaches; from flexible, neutral lighting which helps to present a product in its (literally!) best light, to eye-catching designer pieces that transform the retail space into a surreal, shopping playground and everything in between.
Suspended retail lights can either be more neutral designs, such as Alteme’s linear, orthogonal ‘BAR | Pendant/Wall Luminaire’ or Sattler’s ‘Soft Delta’, a hanging retail light with a rounded, triangular shape. Marcel Wanders’s ‘Zeppelin 2’ retail light for Flos is a chandelier wrapped in a cocoon resin structure that acts as a diffuser. A more understated pendant retail light is Álvaro Siza’s ‘Lorosae’ for Reggiani, a classically proportioned acrylic lamp with a monochromatic lampshade, available is several bright colours, as well as white.
Recessed ceiling lights can also be used to provide illumination in retail environments, be they spotlights, such as Ruben Saldaña’s aluminium ‘Orbital 2Lark’ for ARKOSLIGHT, or Tobias Grau’s prosaically named ‘SET BUILT IN SPOT BLACK/BLACK’, a highly adjustable recessed lighting fixture. In cases a more neutral and even illumination is desired, an LED panel, such as Kreon’s ‘Tenno 5x5’, which can be placed within a suspended ceiling, serves as an ideal retail light.
Finally, track retail lights can be used in order to maximise the flexibility of the space. Here, movable and often adjustable fixtures are attached to a ceiling-mounted rail and can be moved according to the current requirements of the retail environment. These can range from spotlights, such as XAL’s understated, cylindrical ‘BO basic’, or even pendant lamps, such as the steel and glass fixtures of planlicht’s energy-efficient ‘12V turn’.
