Mellow Light V – the new generation
Designed for efficiency

The latest-generation Mellow Light luminaire boasts unrivalled economic efficiency and an impressive design. Just about 30 percent more efficient than its predecessor, Mellow Light V by Zumtobel – as the latest-generation model – has made a quantum leap in terms of efficiency while still retaining the product’s proven benefits. Its understated stylistic idiom has been teamed with uncompromising lighting technology that achieves a light output ratio of up to 87%.

Mellow Light V is the state-of-the-art development of the successful Mellow Light luminaire range. The basic idea behind it, developed by Zumtobel 20 years ago, has definitively revolutionised traditional office lighting, resulting in a change of paradigm as regards the quality of lighting solutions. The luminaire’s increased performance is based on a combination of improvements in the optics, diffuser and thermal management. The central optic, which is available in a lenticular version and with microvanes, has been completely redesigned to allow more light through. The internal reflector provides a reflection factor of 98 percent, and the lighting chambers’ opal diffusers have been changed from opal to prismatic. The Cool Spot Optimizer allows to operate the light sources at optimum temperature, increasing both efficiency and service life.

As Zumtobel is increasingly seeking to provide lighting options that go easy on resources, it was clear that the technical features of the remarkable Mellow Light concept, too, would have to be upgraded and at the same time migrate to LED technology. "Design for efficiency" was the motto specified in a special design competition held for that purpose. The winner of the competition, Milan-based designer James Irvine, was lucky to venture on a reinterpretation of the concept. With a lot of intuition regarding the history and the ambition of the highly successful luminaire range, he set out to rework Mellow Light in terms of both design and technical features. To great success – the fifth generation of Mellow Light cannot fail to impress with its sophisticated technology and design.

Comments James Irvine: "Adopting too much of a flowing shape for a product like Mellow Light V would have been inappropriate: when one enters a room, one can see hundreds of such luminaires in rows on the ceiling with constant repetition of an identical product. Here we need to devise an idiom which, even when repeated, is refreshing."

The new Mellow Light V luminaire is the result of three years of development and a plant investment of EUR 6 million; it is considered to be the most elaborate 600 mm x 600 mm luminaire ever manufactured. Mellow Light V is available as a model with fluorescent lamps, and as a Stable White LED version with a colour temperature of 4000 K.

A five-year guarantee is supplied with the Mellow Light V luminaire range, including control gear and LED. Furthermore, most of the products of the range are marked with the sophisticated eco+ product label developed by Zumtobel to identify particularly energy-efficient products. All Mellow Light V recessed luminaires are generally supplied with the new universal Linect luminaire connection system.
