Concept

The bird chair was created in the image of a bird spreading its wings before flight. The cantilever backboard is supported by a frame where the arms extend backward. Our goal was to offer a chair with a unique presence and a new modality.
Instead of using a northern European-style design, which employs curved wood to connect the arms to backboard in a single line, we stay true to the structural idea of our unique chairs. Without integrating the backboard and arms through the curved wood, the chair takes on a basic form with its cubical design despite the gentle form.

The relationship of both arms and backboard is critical to the structural logic of our chairs and indicates the fundamental product idea. In particular, the most difficult detail in manufacturing this chair is the connection that joins the frame enclosing the backboard to the round backboard with its intricate structure. The chair also required precision in the use of finger joints to join the complex form of the rough-shaved wooden parts raised at an angle from the back of the arms. The rear and front legs are round bars shaped from natural wood. The arms extend horizontally backward and extend passed the connecting point of the rear legs and rise at an angle. This posture is reminiscent of a bird spreading its wings in flight. Also, instead of extending the rear legs straight, the silhouette evokes the image of a bird lowering its body just before flight. The slight inflection toward the inside creates a serene atmosphere. When setting up the bird chairs at a table, you will see the intent of the design more clearly. The design creates dynamic movement and a unique character in space.

The surface of the deep seat and the secure hold at the back provide stability and comfort in a dainty chair. The attempt to reduce the thickness of the seat surface as much as possible brings the thin design to the threshold of structural strength. Although this requires calculating the surface thickness of the seat in consideration of the point of contact with the front and rear legs, we successfully reduced the thickness to the limit, which adds lightness to the overall design. When in actual use, the appearance from the back and the elegant beauty from the sides are important for a chair. This chair embraces a special presence as a frame extending from arms that resemble wings and the backboard.
