Product description

Eliel Saarinen designed this table and chair for the dining room of his Cranbrook home. The fluid lines and restrained elegance are typical Saarinen’s work.

The table frame is solid birch. The tabletop is satinwood, maple and birch veneers, lacquered. The chair frame is solid birch, lacquered. The seat is foam padded and upholstered with horsehair fabric. The fabric was designed by Eliel Saarinen and is manufactured by John Boyd ltd, UK.

The table and Side Chair are also available painted white.

Concept

The Saarinen Suite represents one design of various suites of living room furniture in Saarinen’s Cranbrook home. The inlaid ornamentation with rhythmic pattern and the suite’s restrained elegance are unique in the history of furniture design. The armchair and sofa frames, and the tabletop are solid hardwood with mahogany, lemon and walnut veneers, lacquered. The seat is upholstered. The fabric was designed by Eliel Saarinen and manufactured by Backhausen, Vienna. The cabinet has a ply and solid hardwood frame using East Indian Rosewood, African mahogany and Maple veneers, lacquered. Typical of Saarinen’s subtle style, a beautifully abstract peacock pattern of precious veneers is inland on the inside face of each cabinet door.
