Concept

A traditional Japanese method of woodworking is the inspiration behind porcelain stoneware tiles featuring the evocative look of wood crazing. Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi is an ancient technique that involved the use of fire to preserve the material while at the same time giving it a unique finish. Refin has taken this singular carbonisationprocess and created unique surfaces with a contemporary taste. Three different colours - black Night, white Paper and grey Smoke - are combined with a number of patterns clearly inspired by Japanese culture: Koi (carp), Sakura (cherry blossoms), Kanji (writing), Take (bamboo) and the precious Kintsugi decoration where the art of repairing with gold, giving new meaning to imperfections and fragility, results in precious and impressive wall tiles, paying tribute to one of the most fascinating traditions of the land of the rising sun.
