Here is a highly unique and intriguing vintage carpet – a vintage rya rug that was woven in Scandinavian during the middle years of the twentieth century. Boasting a fascinating color pallet and a compelling design, this Scandinavian rug exemplifies the possibilities inherent in modernist experimentation. Featuring none of the motifs or frequently occurring formats that characterize classical rugs and carpets, this mid-century piece occupies a place very much its own. Green, blue, red, purple and indigo appear throughout the piece, with the indigo creating a mood of whimsy and daring. Colored checks populate most of the composition, while the main aesthetic flourish of the piece – a pair of fascinating circles, joined by a tendon-like band – dances on top. The combination of rectilinear details with highly circular flourishes creates an intriguing dissonance throughout the carpet, which underscores its experimental nature.
