Artful use of varicolored line-work gives this vintage rug from Morocco an illusion of depth. The dark black appears closest to the viewer, leading to a mid-tones red. Pale yellow and green follow next, light in tone for the effect of distance. The meandering lines mimic a classically aged craquelure pattern over the ivory backdrop, with the color graduation adding hints of nooks and crannies throughout. At one end, a dark blue and teal ovoid occupies a space among the colored lines, shaded with squared notches that call to mind facets on a gemstone. Serving as an eye-catching centerpiece, a pool of rich red-orange fills the largest space in the network across the Moroccan Berber rug, and an abstract white figure floats within the bright area. Between this and the sapphirine shape, a smattering of fiery, mottled droplets studs the light-hued spaces.
