Munkegaard Mini

Recessed ceiling lights from Louis Poulsen, Designed by Arne Jacobsen

Product description

Munkegaard Mini resulted from modification of the Munkegaard family, originally designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1959.

Concept

In 1955, Arne Jacobsen designed the first recessed fixture to illuminate the ceiling and in that way even out light contrasts. He created it for a school, called Munkegårdsskolen, in Søborg just outside Copenhagen, hence the fixture’s name. The Munkegaard is suspended right below the ceiling where it seems to hover in the air when switched on. The shade is made of two layers of glass and acrylic that provide a particularly even and soft light and which makes the ceiling appear higher too. The Munkegaard is distinctly characterised by Arne Jacobsen, with its discrete, elegant and timeless appearance that complements all architectural settings, also today.
