Garden is an elegant upholstery textile created by designer Hella Jongerius in collaboration with Maharam. Reinterpretations of her internationally acclaimed Layers collection, it fuses sustainable materials, sophisticated colours and delicate, flowing patterns.

Whilst the original Layers collection, which was designed in 2008, features embroidered upholstery textiles made with a single or double layer of wool, Garden is woven in crisp satin weaves. Consequently, it is able to precisely capture the ’wavering line’ qualities of Hella Jongerius’ original hand-drawn sketches.

The intricate pattern of Garden is woven in a contrasting tone to the background colour. Reminiscent of landscapes viewed from above, they combine geometric substructures with flourishing organic and decorative motifs to eye-catching effect.

Compared to the original Layers collection, the repeats for Garden has been adjusted to conform with standard loom repeat sizes and is 39 cm. It is designed to be cut randomly and, as a result, are versatile and easy to work with.

Garden comes in seven colours. The colourways for the textile, which are crafted to stand apart from those of Layers, highlight Hella Jongerius’ unique approach to colour: it offers highly individual combinations, such as robin’s egg blue with cool grey or pale mauve with copper.

Designed to meet the demands of the contract market, Garden offers good abrasion as well as strain resistance through a PFOA-Free Stain Resistant treatment. Consequently, it is suitable for private homes and a number of different types of contract usage, as for instance hospitality venues.

Importantly, as the textile features recycled content and renewable materials it is appropriate for those looking for a textile with a reduced environmental impact; for instance, architects or interior designers working with LEED certified buildings.

Dutch-born Hella Jongerius is an industrial designer working from her Berlin-based studio, Jongeriuslab.
A graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, she fuses ancient craft techniques and modern technology to create work, which is typified by contextual twists, historical archetypes and transformations from old to new. Hella Jongerius’ output ranges from one-offs and limited editions to industrial products for consumers, such as her work for Vitra, Nymphenburg and IKEA.
Current projects include the cabin interiors of KLM Airlines and the North Delegates’ Lounge in New York City’s U.N. building worldwide.
