SuperWire is the first family of modular lamps designed by Formafantasma for Flos. A magical and poetic project, with an essential design but a great stage presence, which recalls the work of the great glass masters of the last century. Made of planar glass and polished aluminum, its design originated from the development of a custom-made light source that emits a warm and homogeneous light. Made up of one or more hexagons of planar glass connected by a polished aluminum element, SuperWire lights up its entire surface thanks to a new source developed by the Flos R&D team: a very thin, flat, soft, flexible LED strip measuring up to one meter, which emits a warm and homogeneous light along its entire length and which can be easily removed for replacement and repair, unique in the panorama of LED bulb-less lamps. This floor version, is built with two 75 cm high modules, placed one above the other, resting on a steel tripod, a tribute to the historic Luminator by the Castiglioni brothers.
Concept
SuperWire de Formafantasma nace de la experimentación de los diseñadores con el filamento luminoso de las bombillas LED, cuya flexibilidad y presencia estética aprovechan para crear una colección de lámparas modulares que fusionan una mentalidad industrial con códigos de diseño atemporales.
Una lámpara atemporal para el futuro
La colección incluye modelos de mesa, suspensión y suelo. Cada lámpara cuenta con una base hexagonal construida con paneles de vidrio planos conectados mediante elementos de aluminio pulido e iluminados con una tira de LED fina, plana y flexible, desarrollada específicamente por Flos de hasta un metro de longitud.
Alta tecnología y sostenibilidad
SuperWire combina el compromiso medioambiental que siempre ha acompañado el trabajo del estudio con una estética poética. La colección es un ejemplo poco común de diseño de iluminación en el que el usuario puede retirar la fuente de luz LED para cambiarla.
Toda la superficie de SuperWire, conformada por hexágonos de vidrio planos conectados mediante elementos de aluminio pulido, se ilumina por medio de una fuente de luz desarrollada específicamente por el equipo de I + D de Flos. Esta tira de LED puede retirarse fácilmente para su sustitución y reparación; una innovación única en el diseño de lámparas sin bombillas LED.

La lámpara de pie se compone de dos módulos de 75 cm apilados verticalmente sobre un trípode de acero, un homenaje a la icónica Luminator de los hermanos Castiglioni

La lámpara de mesa está conformada por un único módulo de 45 cm coronado con una cubierta de vidrio hexagonal.

Andrea Trimarchi (1983) and Simone Farresin (1980) are Studio Formafantasma, an Italian designers duo based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Their interest in product design developed on the IM master course at Design Academy Eindhoven, where they graduated in July 2009. Since then, Formafantasma has developed a coherent body of work characterised by experimental material investigations and explored issues such as the relationship between tradition and local culture, critical approaches to sustainability and the significance of objects as cultural conduits. In perceiving their role as a bridge between craft, industry, object and user, they are interested in forging links between their research-based practice and a wider design industry. As a result, works by Studio Formafantasma have been commissioned by a variety of partners including Fendi, Max Mara - Sportmax, Hermès, Droog, Nodus rug, J&L Lobmeyr, Gallery Giustini - Stagetti/Galleria O. Roma, Gallery Libby Sellers, Established and Sons, Lexus and Flos. Whether designing for a client or investigating alternative applications of materials, Studio Formafantasma apply the same rigorous attention to context, process and detail to every project they undertake. The added nuance for the duo is that they do so with an eye to the historical, political and social forces that have shaped their environments. Their work has been presented and published internationally and museums such as New York's MoMA, London’s Victoria and Albert, New York's Metropolitan Museum, the Chicago Art Institute, the TextielMuseum in Tilburg, the Stedelijk’s-Hertogenbosch, MUDAC Lausanne, the Mint Museum of Craft and Design in North Carolina and the MAK Museum in Vienna have all acquired Formafantasma’s designs for their permanent collections. In March 2011 Paola Antonelli of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and esteemed design critic Alice Rawsthorn listed their studio amongst a handful of practices that would shape the future of design. Andrea and Simone are lecturing and heading workshops in various Universities and Institutions. Currently they are teaching at the ‘Well Being’ and 'Contextual Design' Departments of the Design Academy Eindhoven. Since October 2016, they are at the head of the Design bachelor at MADE Program in Siracusa, Italy.
