EUVAL terrazzo for German university of the arts in Folkwang
Folkwang University of the Arts was built on the ground of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The building is inspired by coal mine architecture and was developed through cubes of different sizes and heights placed side by side and clad with a metal/glass facade. In the atrium there is an imposing metal structure covering the skeleton of the stairs, which creates a style continuity also in the interior spaces.
The stairs and floors were clad with EUVAL terrazzo 80.20 Caran, an anthracite-colored material where among ebony-colored grits stand out multiple silver-colored fragments that evoke the metals used to clad the building’s exterior.
A 60x60x2cm format was chosen for the flooring and laid with cross joints, thus creating a regular geometric pattern in style with the entire building.
Stairs covered with the same material in terrazzo give continuity between floors. For the stairs, a contrast strip was provided for each ramp so that the building would be barrier-free.
